The first full-CGI television series done by an American studio (Netter Digital).

The show was cancelled by Ted Koplar, President of the Voltron rights owner World Events Productions, despite the fact that this was the top syndicated show on the market for boys ages thirteen to twenty-one-years-old. The success of this new series brought CGI animation studio Netter Digital technical accolades for their innovative production pipeline integrating motion-capture with LightWave software. This allowed for the pace of television animation to be profitable in 3-D, the first profitable 3-D-animated television series made. On the heels of this show's success, new animation business deals came into Netter in 1999 from Sony TV Animation, Lego, and the U.K. The success was short-lived. Netter Digital failed to capitalize on the success of this show due to internal management issues over the cancellation of Crusade (1999), the spin-off series of Babylon 5 (1993), for which Netter Digital had been created to support. Netter Digital closed their doors in 2001 after management could not settle their differences between focusing on animation production vs. launching more live-action shows.

In the original series, Keith wore red and piloted the Black Lion, Sven wore black (and, later, Allura wore pink) and piloted the Blue Lion, Lance wore blue and piloted the Red Lion, Pidge wore green and piloted the Green Lion, and Hunk wore orange and piloted the Yellow Lion. In this series, the uniforms of the Voltron Force match the colors of their respective Lions (Keith-black, Allura-blue, Lance-Red, Pidge-green, and Hunk-yellow).

All of the characters were motion captured in-house at Netter Digital. A separate actor or actress was used for each character so he or she would walk and move the same from episode to episode. The room was about the size of a two-car garage. The only exception was one of the supervising animators and one of the 3-D animators were used for all of the fight scenes, because they were both black belts in Taekwondo.

Queen Arriella, the first queen of Arus, who built the Castle dedicated the castle to the Lions that form Voltron. The robot lions were created by the spirits of the real lions of Planet Arus, whereas in the original series. Voltron was created by King Alfor and his scientists.
