Animation had a wild year in 1998. Disney released the action-packed musical "Mulan," which broke new ground in terms of Asian American representation in animation. Meanwhile, Pixar followed up "Toy Story" with "A Bug's Life" and showed CGI animation was (for better and worse) here to stay, even as"Pokémon: The First Movie" took Pokémania to new heights and broke box office records. Most importantly, it was the year when Disney's domination over the American animation landscape truly started to crumble, with three different studios making their feature animation debuts that year: Nickelodeon with "The Rugrats Movie," Warner Bros. Feature Animation with "Quest for Camelot," and DreamWorks Animation with both "Antz" (its answer to "A Bug's Life") and "The Prince of Egypt."
That last bit is especially important. While Nickelodeon Movies didn't stick to theatrical features for very long (with the exception of its "SpongeBob SquarePants" sequels) and Warner Bros. Feature...

Although there were plenty of '90s sitcoms set in the workplace, "NewsRadio" stands out as one of the best and most underrated of these. It revolved around the team at a second-rate Am radio station in New York City, with an anything-goes approach that saw the show embrace everything from broad physical comedy and rapid-fire quipping to satire and more outlandish surrealism. "NewsRadio" ran for five seasons, airing on NBC from 1995 to 1999 and surviving even the tragic death of one of its main cast members.
Unlike many other workplace sitcoms, there's remarkably little turnover from an ensemble perspective -- "NewsRadio" had a small group of actors that made up its news station, and the majority of them stuck with the show for its entire runtime. That speaks to both the quality of "NewsRadio" and what a positive working experience it fostered. Although it isn't the most widely known television show from the '90s,...

Plimsoll Productions, the company behind natural history titles such as Apple’s Tiny World and Disney+’s A Bug’s Life, is fishing for a U.S. sale of its shark infested reality competition series.
The company is launching Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters on ITV this evening and is hoping that solid ratings will be chum in the water for broadcasters and streaming services searching for more shark content.
The series takes a group of celebrities to the Bahamas – the shark capital of the world – and tasks them with diving with a different species of shark, with the breeds getting bigger and more dangerous each time.
Plimsoll boss Grant Mansfield was out in LA last month to pitch the format to broadcast networks and streamers and two of his key lieutenants – Head of Factual Entertainment Karen Plumb and Creative Director, Factual Entertainment Andrea Jackson – are confident that it will sell Stateside.

The Christopher Nolan of 2006 was not the Christopher Nolan of today. Though he had cut his teeth as a tentpole director on "Batman Begins" a year earlier, Nolan hadn't gone into that movie with the intent of launching a trilogy. Nor, for that matter, had he shown any inkling of becoming a big-budget tradesman exclusively. Even on "Batman Begins," Nolan hadn't entirely brushed off the mindset of an artist painting on a smaller canvas and used basic camera setups for much of the action.
This didn't radically change with his follow-up, "The Prestige," but the movie was still a crucial stepping stone to his love affair with IMAX and the more dynamic filming style he embraced in the years that followed. The 2006 period piece tells a small-scale tale of two rival magicians in a way that makes it feel like an epic, in no small part thanks to director of photography Wally Pfister.

In the year 2000, to show off its newest technological capabilities, the IMAX Corporation produced a 44-minute demo film called "CyberWorld." It was its first in-house film presented in 3-D. "CyberWorld" played at the IMAX theater on the Universal Citywalk before eventually screening in IMAX theaters all over the world. It drew in enough tourists to earn over $16.6 million at the box office, making it a legit smash hit. Not bad for a film constructed mostly of clips from other movies and TV shows.
The idea of "CyberWorld" was to convert extant footage from recent hit films and known TV programs into 3-D and present them with a small amount of wholly original bookend material. In construction, "CyberWorld" was no different from a clip show or traditional TV retrospective. In execution, though, the 3-D (not to mention the outsize IMAX format) enhanced the clips greatly, making them a whole new experience.

Clearly, Elio isn’t destined to have the same success that Pixar and Walt Disney enjoyed just last summer thanks to their worldwide billion-dollar blockbuster, Inside Out 2 — no, not even close. Inside Out 2 made an astonishing $154.2 million over its opening weekend at the box office and went on to make $1.698 billion globally to become the highest-grossing film of 2024. Fast-forward a year later, even with all its praise from the critics and audiences, and poor Elio still went down as one of the lowest-grossing debuts of all time for Pixar. In fact, apart from Soul and Turning Red, Elio set the record for the worst premiere in the modern era of the studio’s history.
Elio seemed poised to challenge How to Train Your Dragon and 28 Years Later for the top spot at this weekend’s box office. In fact, Boxoffice Pro’s long-range forecast predicted Pixar’s...

While Pixar was hoping to rocket to success, Elio has not been quite as profitable as the studio had hoped. Pixar's latest animated feature is a science-fiction epic about a young boy (Yonas Kibreab) who dreams of being abducted by aliens, only to be shocked when it actually happens. Elio has received astounding reviews, with ScreenRant's Rachel Labonte calling it Pixar's "best movie in years." Unfortunately, despite impressive visuals, strong character work, and a strong sense of humor, the movie is struggling to draw viewers.
According to a report by Variety, Elio is disappointing both domestically and overseas. It debuted in third place at the weekend box office with a domestic total of just $21 million, which is the fourth-lowest opening total in Pixar's history. The movie earned an additional $14 million overseas, which would add up to a global total of $35 million. That is the worst start in Pixar's recent history and could be devastating,...

It's another big weekend for new releases, but none of them will quite manage to dethrone How to Train Your Dragon. According to Deadline, 28 Years Later earned $14 million at the North American box office on Friday for an expected $28 million - $30 million opening weekend.
That's a decent result, and one that places it in front of 2022's Scream and last year's Longlegs. However, with the live-action How to Train Your Dragon still proving a big draw for audiences, 28 Years Later won't top its expected $35.2 million haul.
Not helping Danny Boyle's long-awaited 28 Days Later follow-up is a B CinemaScore. That's on par with the likes of Abigail, M3GAN, and Smile 2, but below this year's breakout horror hit, Sinners.
Why the lower-than-expected score after receiving 90% on Rotten Tomatoes (its audience score is 67%)? It may have something to do with that divisive, controversial ending.
The pressure is on 28 Years Later to deliver.

Pixar is a renowned animation studio known for revolutionizing animated movies with groundbreaking technology, along with stories that blend humor and emotion for young audiences and adults. The first Pixar movie was Toy Story in 1995, the first fully computer-animated feature. The studio followed that up by creating more animated classics like A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars. After being acquired by Disney in 2006, Pixar continued producing hits, such as Ratatouille, Wall-e, Up, Inside Out, and many more.
However, in recent years, Pixar has experienced a series of disappointments. After Onward underperformed at the box office due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were all sent straight to streaming on Disney+. Lightyear was the first Pixar movie to be released in theaters since Onward, and became a big box-office bomb. However, after Elemental became a sleeper hit, Inside Out 2 went on to...

Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter has revealed what motivates the animation studio to turn one of their films into a franchise. Pixar Animation Studios is one of the last major studios that seems to be able to get audiences to rush out for original ideas, as the company's name has become a brand in itself. Even though the company still makes many original films, starting in the 2010s, there was a greater increase in sequels and prequels to their popular films. But why does Cars get a sequel and not say Ratatouille or A Bug's Life?
Speaking with Screen Rant, Pete Docter revealed that a Pixar film needs to be successful at the box office and find the right story to justify creating a sequel. Even if a movie is a hit, that doesn't necessarily mean the film will get a sequel, as they will spend time developing the...

Forty years ago, a clerical error and bad blood cost Akira Kurosawa an Oscar.
The legendary Japanese filmmaker's Ran proved the final samurai masterpiece of his distinguished career. His third Shakespeare adaptation, the film is epic in every sense of the word — massive in scale, shot in glorious color, with vicious betrayal and intense action and emotion. At the time of its release in 1985, Kurosawa was certainly well-regarded by the Motion Picture Academy, receiving an Honorary Award for Outstanding Foreign-Language Film for Rashomon, followed by Best Foreign-Language Film in 1976 for Dersu Uzala. The 58th Academy Awards found Ran competing for four awards, including Kurosawa’s only Best Director nod — despite not being submitted for Best Foreign-Language Film, a snub that was the product of a messy history.

Boo from "Monsters Inc.," Baby Dory from "Finding Dory," Jack-Jack from "The Incredibles," Dot from "A Bug's Life," Squirt from "Finding Nemo," the titular "Wall-e" -- these are just some of the cutest characters to come from Pixar Animation. Pixar movies are always magical, bringing emotional depth to stunning visuals that move both adults and kids. But the one ingredient that has always been sprinkled on almost every single Pixar film is the voice of John Ratzenberger, the studio’s lucky charm.
With a filmography full of larger-than-life characters, most would think that the voice actor would get his due with every new release that aims to include him. But sometimes, even beloved veterans like Ratzenberger aren’t honored properly, and it’s more than evident in Soul.

It's generally agreed that John Lasseter's 2006 film "Cars" is one of Pixar's less ambitious movies. Other movies in the Pixar canon tickled the imagination by presenting the secret worlds of commonplace beings. "Toy Story" posited that our toys came to life when we weren't looking (which we always kinda knew was true anyway). "A Bug's Life" saw ants as arranged into a tiny, secret society, while "Finding Nemo" did the same with fish. "Monsters, Inc." said that closet monsters were real, but that they only scare children as an element of a boring, blue-collar job. Back in monster land, the monsters are boring like your dad.
"Cars" was a departure for the studio, as there was no secret being revealed. "Cars" took place in a parallel universe wherein living beings were replaced by anthropomorphic vehicles. They had eyes instead of windshields, and mouths on their bumpers. They seemed to eat gasoline.

Many years ago, onlookers watched with bated breath as Wyatt Earp marched out to confront ... Wyatt Earp. It was the mid-'90s, and two rival films about the legendary Wild West lawman were vying for the cinemagoer's buck: First up, on Christmas Day 1993, was George P. Cosmatos's "Tombstone," followed six months later by Lawrence Kasdan's "Wyatt Earp." Twin movies were a regular phenomenon in the '90s: You had "Deep Impact" versus "Armageddon," "Dante's Peak" versus "Volcano," and even "Antz" versus "A Bug's Life." But the dueling Westerns had a lot more at stake, because there was a significant beef between the two productions.
Kevin Costner was set to star in "Tombstone" before falling out with screenwriter Kevin Jarre, moving on to develop his own epic biopic of the frontier marshal with Lawrence Kasdan. Rather than let things lie, however, rumors circulated that Costner had tried using his...

Aside from video games, board games also get film and TV adaptations. One of them is Clue (or Cluedo), which was first announced in 2021, then later in 2024 when it was revealed to be an animated series that Sony will release. Unfortunately, this board game project was unable to leave the tabletop setting as it was recently reported that the show was canceled.
Clue's writer Dewayne Perkins revealed in an interview that the show was canceled but didn't give any reason why that was the case. He also didn't shed light on whether anyone else would pick up the project or what was going to happen to the IP. In 2021, it was reported that Fox was developing the Clue TV series, as it partnered with Hasbro and Bento Box Entertainment to make the series. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, it seemed as if Pixar could do no wrong. The animation studio, in league with Disney, pushed forward the idea of all-computer-animated feature films back in 1995 with the release of "Toy Story," gaining a lot of critical attention for its clever writing and penchant for heart-rending sentimentality. It wouldn't be until the release of "Cars 2" in 2011 that critics would begin to cool to the studio. And even still, "Cars 2" was a $559 million hit.
In the 2010s, Pixar began to skew further and further away from original ideas and lean heavier into sequels or prequels to its earlier hits. Indeed, of the 10 Pixar features released in that decade, six were part of an established franchise. Some of these films were excellent, but the studio nevertheless seemed a few years beyond its creative peak.

Remember when Pixar changed animation forever with the bold, inventive, and otherwise creative "Toy Story?" How about when the studio continued to release original movies that pushed the medium of animation forward while exploring vastly different stories and genres? Sure, there were sequels even in the earlier days, but not only did movies like "Toy Story 2" actually provide something new and different from their predecessors, but they were also balanced out by twice as many original Pixar movies.
Well, say goodbye to the good old days! Pixar, like its parent company Walt Disney Studios, is now all about chasing the mighty and elusive dollar with artistically-dubious sequels that parents will go to movie theaters to see because there is virtually nothing else to entertain kids with at the movies. We already knew Pixar was making not just another "Toy Story" sequel, but also a third "The Incredibles" movie. Now,...

Pixar is one of the most successful production companies of all time, mostly because it has managed to create a ton of amazing kids' films. These movies have captured the hearts and minds of mass audiences, transporting them into fictional worlds that feel so brilliantly surreal. As such, without Pixar, it could be argued that the film industry would be stuck in a very stagnant state.
Another great aspect of Pixar's success was its fictional bloopers. Normally, as part of a DVD extra, the studio would create a few extra scenes that would showcase the characters messing up their lines or getting caught up in some silly hijinks. While they aren't used in modern films, these bloopers helped Pixar stand out from the crowd in a very competitive era.

If you grew up in the early 2000s, chances are you spent many evenings with Ray Barone (Ray Romano) and his eccentric family in the hit comedy series "Everybody Loves Raymond." For good reason. This critically acclaimed sitcom about Ray, a Newsday sportswriter, dealing with his put-upon wife Debra (Patricia Heaton), bickering parents (Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts), and neurotic brother Robert (Brad Garrett), perfectly captures the working-class family and all its quirks, resulting in a heartfelt, often hilarious look at everyday life.
Running from 1997 to 2005, "Raymond" won 15 Primetime Emmys, garnered critical acclaim, and averaged over 20 million viewers during its peak. More impressively, the cast became household names, forever tied to their characters. Still, while many cast members achieved even greater success following the show's finale, others faded into obscurity or endured heartbreaking tragedy. Interested to learn more? Andrew Stanton has made some amazing animated films like Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory but many believe that Wall-e is his best work. The film even won him an Academy Award. The story of “Wall-e” isn’t complex—it’s simple and sleek, just like his other movies. But what makes it special is that it’s more than just a regular animated film; it feels like a journey, this time told through the eyes of a little robot. In terms of storytelling and execution, “Wall-e” is a masterpiece that will never get old.
Wall-e (2008) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: Who is Wall-e?
The film begins on a dystopian Earth that has been completely trashed. Cities are abandoned, towns are empty, and the entire planet has become a giant garbage dump. Years of pollution, overconsumption, and corporate greed have drained Earth of its resources, making it unlivable.

Pixar's second-ever motion picture (following the blockbuster release of Toy Story in 1995) was none other than A Bug's Life. The film never had the enduring appeal of Pixar's other projects, such as Finding Nemo or The Incredibles. Nevertheless, A Bug's Life has always had its enthusiasts.

Moana 2 has joined the billion-dollar club. The animated sequel to 2016's Moana has officially crossed the $1 billion benchmark, making it the first Disney animated movie to achieve this milestone since 2019's Frozen II.
Per Variety, Moana 2 becomes Disney's third 2024 release to join the billion-dollar club, following Pixar's Inside Out 2 ($1.69B) and Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.33B). Moana 2's success at the box office comes after a rough few years for Walt Disney Animation Studios. While part of these box office struggles was brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, critical reception and audience interest in the last few movies were far below what a Disney movie typically receives, which no doubt impacted their respective box office hauls. A year after DreamWorks released Madagascar, Disney released its own animated movie with a near-identical plot, The Wild. Released in 2005, Madagascar stars Chris Rock as Marty, an ambitious zebra at the Central Park Zoo who dreams of leaving behind his enclosure and exploring the outside world. The cast is rounded out by Ben Stiller as Alex the egocentric lion, Jada Pinkett Smith as Gloria the confident hippo, and David Schwimmer as Melman the hypochondriac giraffe, who all escape with Marty and end up stranded on the titular island.

Kerry Bellessa's 2024 movie Amber Alert is a fast-paced kidnap story. The film is a remake of Bellessa's 2012 movie of the same name, which made use of a found footage style. While the primary plot elements are similar, the Amber Alert remake is able to expand on the original in a few ways, including some changes to the story. Amber Alert has received mixed to good reviews.
While the direction and interesting take on the abduction thriller genre keep the movie interesting, the real highlight of Amber Alert is the acting performances of the main characters. Arguably the best thing about The Far Side is that it doesn’t subscribe to the normal style of the comic strip medium in that the series doesn’t feature a main character. Recurring characters, sure, but no main character. That’s how The Far Side is able to get away with putting any type of character in its comics, as they only serve to highlight the punchline of any given joke.
There has been no shortage of bizarre characters featured in The Far Side, including babies, aliens, and even trees. Detective elephants and psychopathic ducks also litter The Far Side, further confirming that there’s really no telling what to expect with one of the series' comics. Therefore, it should come as a surprise to no one that The Far Side has used bugs as starring characters in a number of its strips - enough, even, to put Pixar...

In today's eyes, A Bug's Life is just one of the many films made by Disney and Pixar, but back in the late '90s, the film was a huge deal, being the second or third CG-animated film to ever be made. That's also not the only thing important to know about the animated film. A Bug's Life was also responsible for starting a feud between two major studios: Disney and DreamWorks.
Around the same time Disney was developing A Bug's Life with Pixar Animation Studios, DreamWorks announced that they were making Antz, a similar bug movie with an almost identical premise. It would also be fully computer-generated. The two bug movies were in direct competition with each other, and so were the studios behind them. With no one seeming to be interested in backing out of the race, the feud between Pixar and DreamWorks intensified.

"Seven Samurai" by master Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa might just be the most remade film ever. The 1954 film is, sure enough, about seven samurai recruited to protect a farming village from bandits. The setting, themes, and characters are Japanese, but the premise is evergreen. "The Magnificent Seven" is just "Seven Samurai" but with cowboys. "A Bug's Life" retold the story with, well, bugs. "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" episode "Bounty Hunters" recruits the seven from Jedi Knights and alien mercenaries.
"Star Wars" creator George Lucas is a well-known fan of Kurosawa. (Lucas even helped him finance his 1980 epic "Kagemusha.") The galaxy far, far away isn't the only space franchise that can riff on "Seven Samurai" though. "Star Trek: Enterprise" aped the premise for its season 2 episode, "Marauders."
First, though, why are Kurosawa's films so often remade in spirit (besides them being so good)? One reason is ease of translation. Kurosawa...

While almost all of Pixar’s movies were well-received critically, six of their outings have the unfortunate distinction of ruining the studio’s staggering streak at the Academy Awards. All of Pixar’s movies have their fans, and the studio’s output is often viewed as some of the best family animations that Hollywood has to offer. Since the studio blazed onto the scene with the 1995 blockbuster Toy Story, Pixar married smart scripts, captivating characters, and original ideas with groundbreaking animation. Not only was the studio a leader in 3D animation, but Pixar also had the quality to back up this novelty.

Put the town on alert! The 1997 volcano film Dante’s Peak will be erupting into a new 4K Ultra-High Definition Blu-ray on February 11th. The movie is a part of the often-occurring dual release of movies with similar plots, with examples that include Armageddon and Deep Impact, Antz and A Bug’s Life and White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen. Dante’s Peak would be released the same year as the other notable volcano film Volcano. Volcano would star Tommy Lee Jones and sport a...

Though they continue to be one of the most celebrated animation studios for a wide range of projects, the Toy Story franchise remains one of Pixar's most iconic, and Toy Story 2 is a prime reason why. The 1999 sequel served as the studio's third feature-length project after making their debut with the 1995 original, which was nominated for three Oscars, and 1998's A Bug's Life, one of Pixar's more underrated efforts. It also wouldn't be the end of the franchise, either, as two more sequels have been released and a Toy Story 5 is currently in production.
The sequel to Pixar's critically-acclaimed Toy Story, Toy Story 2 picks up the story of Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen) when the cowboy doll is stolen by a toy collector. Learning that he's actually a rare collectible, Woody considers joining the collection along with cowgirl Jessie (Joan Cusack) and Stinky Pete...
