    Brainless Moralizing

Don't get me wrong - I believe in morals, but this movie gives them a bad name. A good moral is no excuse to make a bad movie. Someone made this film to teach kids the value of good deeds and unconditional friendship, but it's so badly put together that nobody's going to associate that message with anything good. What really did it for me was the idea that a good small-town kid (who looks plenty old enough to be somewhat set in his values) could go off to the city and almost immediately come back with a new fashion statement, a bad attitude, and a very unconvincing stereotypical urban bad boy accent. Sheesh, at least avoid insulting our intelligence by allowing several years for this transformation.

    cinematic *gold*

this movie is the most amazing piece of artwork i have ever seen. Did you notice that when Pete came back to Elk Ridge from Chicago he wanted to change his last name to Valdez? Those mormon screenwriters sure know how to make rascism funny. I really love this movie because it's reality based. You know, it really reminded me of the times in little league when i would stand up and start cheering "you got the right one baby!"

5 RANDOM REASONS WHY THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING

    1. The women know their roles in family life 2. That ungrateful Widow Jenkins makes the boys do her shopping after they save her life....she really gets my blood boiling! 3. The word candy does not exist in Utah. It has been replaced with.....................TREATS!!!!! 4. The bad gang is very menacing....throwing rocks at bottles, setting trash on fire, ding dong ditching, 'kick me' signs on backs, you name it 5. 4-MAN choreographed huffy skid-outs!!!!!!!!

if this stuff doesn't excite you then STAY OUTTA UTAH!

    Funny Things

I also received this movie in the mail as a kid and did like it. I came to this site to prove a point to people because these kids in my home town recently decided to start their own "gang" call "The Butter Creamers" i almost died laughing when i heard this. They think its cool and I tried to explain to them how that name is already taken by a hallmark film from my childhood so here i am.

My favorite scene was when the old woman fell down and needed help. It reminded me on the "Help I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up!" Life Alert commercials.

    Enjoy the film!

    The film was very wonderful

I believe this film was the best I have ever seen. I believe it a biblical lesson about loving others. One thing this film teaches that God wants us to do is to love our enemies. When one of the members of the buttercream gang, Pete, went to Chicago and joined a real gang that does nothing but commit evil, Pete really changes from a very good person who helps to a very mean person who harms. When Pete went back to chicago, he was mean until Scott made a difference in his life and changed him back to the good person that he was because he loved Pete even though Pete has hurt him. I believe the biblical lesson that this movie teaches us is to love your neighbor as you love yourself and that also means loving our enemies. I would recommend this movie to everyone.

Not progressive, but certainly not full of hatred either.

My sister and I used to watch this movie, which we somehow got at school at least ten years ago, and we would make fun of it, loving it at the same time. We knew how ridiculous it was, even in elementary school. We were entertained all the same. I haven't seen it in a few years, so I'm not sure what I'd think of it if I saw it with "fresh" eyes, which would be hard to do considering we must've watched it on about 50 rainy days over the years. We still sing the song sometimes.

The acting is ridiculous, and the characters are so corny it's unbelievable. The plot is so unrealistic- rescuing the Widow Jenkins? The kids are far too old to be behaving as they do, like someone else pointed out. You gotta love the scene with the robbery- the guy wearing the pantyhose on his head, and the kids trapping him. Let's not forget all the drama that goes down at the store, and the amazing pyrotechnics at the school dance.

"The Buttercream Gang" is not very progressive in its character portrayals and storyline, but just because it comes from a conservative standpoint, I don't think it's full of hatred. Also, it does take place in a small town, where it is unlikely there would be much diversity. I don't find it misogynistic, except for perhaps how they always call her "Widow Jenkins." Really, that is not misogynistic, just lame, traditional, and somewhat sexist. There's a difference between that and misogyny, the hatred of women. C'mon, sweeping the porch while wearing a dress isn't a misogynistic image! You're reading too much into this movie. Plus, this film does feature a somewhat strong and untraditional girl, Margaret, who reads a lot and asks Scott to the dance. Then again, they do show her being taunted by Pete's "tough" friends, so you could see it either way.

The most troubling thing is how Hispanics are shown as gang members. It would have been just as believable if they'd been white, but no, they had to contrast the gang members with the Buttercreamers as much as possible. (Those awful city kids! Thank goodness for sheltered kids from small towns!) The only good character in the whole movie is the father, a Vietnam vet, who shares some solid advice with his son. All the other moralizing in the movie is pretty lame. The ultimate message- unconditional love- is valid, in my opinion, but it certainly isn't very compelling or moving here.

Ultimately, I can't hate this film, although if I were seeing it for the first time I probably would. It's a part of my childhood. "The Buttercream Gang" is just so laughable- the rampages, the cheesy dialogue, the "scary" gang, the early 90s cultural references, the hideous clothes (which weren't even very fashionable when the movie was made). "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!" It shouldn't be seen as representative of Christianity, in my opinion, other than its promotion of unconditional love. Very few Christians would act like these people, and most would see this film for what it is- a laughable kid's film, trying to tote values.

I feel like in writing this comment, I have taken "The Buttercream Gang" far too seriously.
