One of seven film collaborations of actress Julia Blake and writer-director Paul Cox. The story-line was based on the film's director and co-writer Paul Cox's own first marriage. He said: ''It was inspired by the breakup of my marriage, but the only recognisable character is the husband, me.'' He also said: ''The character of the husband with all his weakness and bad behaviour, was based on me. But I wasn't pointing an accusing finger at anyone else, and the characters of the wife and lover aren't based on reality but are purely fictitious.'' According to the 'Oz Movies' website, ''...the AFC [Australian Film Commission], before it would support the project, demanded that [director Paul] Cox's ex-wife sign a release form in which she waived any future legal action against the film.''
During the scene where Paul Hargreaves and Wendy Hughes have the fight, Hargreaves actually punched Hughes during the first take. Director Paul Cox insisted they do it again, as their true emotions had overwhelmed the drama of the scene, in spite of the actors' protests. It was the second take, with simulated punches, that was used.
