With his recent Epic Split video for Volvo becoming an instant viral sensation action star Jean-Claude Van Damme has reminded everyone that he’s still as badass as he’s ever been.

Since his humble beginnings as ‘Gay Karate Man’ in Monaco Forever to his scene stealing turn in The Expendables 2 he’s compiled a pretty long list of similarly epic moments in both Film and TV, such as fighting evil versions of himself, playing ice hockey to prevent a bomb going off and trying to make both Coors Light and a mullet seem cool. No mean feat.

Here we’ve complied 8 of the best, most epic moments in a career that’s featured many, starting with a lesson in dancing, Van Damme style.

First Stallone, now Van Damme, it seems today was the day to reboot the films of 80s action stars. The latest is Bloodsport, the 1988 action film that served as Jean-Claude Van Damme‘s first major starring role (outside of his turn as ‘Gay Karate Man’ in Monaco Forever). Variety reports that James McTeigue, of V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin, will be directing the upcoming remake. While the original film was based off of a somewhat-true story (the real-life version of Van Damme’s character, Frank Dux, allegedly fought in a bloody tournament similar to the filmed one), the updated story will likely have a political edge. Two years ago, it was reported that a new Bloodsport would follow a mercenary fresh from Afghanistan, who seeks respite from violence but ends up in a deadly Brazilian fighting tournament. There’s no word on the Afghanistan angle, but Variety’s article does include the phrases “21st century mercenaries...

Oh, it's Jean-Claude Van Damme. Let's all get snarky and ironic.

Yeah, he's not winning any acting Oscars, but the Belgian kickboxer-turned-action star has entertained us more than 90% of his Hollywood peers. Fusing years of karate and kickboxing training with -- fine -- a slightly melodramatic acting style, he's made films like "Kickboxer," "Bloodsport" and "Double Impact" that have influenced a generation of martial arts movies and set the standard that many lesser imitators would follow.

In honor of his (presumably butt-kicking) role as Master Croc in "Kung Fu Panda 2," here's a look back at some of Jcvd's finest moments both onscreen and off.

Bloodsport 2? Yep.

Jean-Claude Van Damme managed to get through an interview without hitting on the journalist , and confirmed to Total Film that a sequel is imminent. Now, perhaps you're well-versed on all things Bloodsport, and you remember that there were already sequels. Ah, yes, that's true, but none of them starred Jcvd. And he wants to get it done the right way.

“We’re gonna do Bloodsport 2, which was my first movie. And I want to do it now in a very mature way, where the guy from Bloodsport is a complete bum, maybe abusing his son," offers Van Damme.

Two things: Bloodsport wasn't his first movie. I thought it was No Retreat, No Surrender, but there are a few things earlier that that. His first movie was actually Monaco Forever, in which he played Gay Karate Man. Tough to live that one down.

Long ago, before the problems with drugs and fights at strip clubs, Jean Claude Van Damme ripped himself out of the fighting world, oiled up his flesh, and became America's Muscles from Brussels. At first, the process was slow and simple -- breaking into the world of film as "Gay Karate Man" in Monaco Forever, being a background performer in Rue barbare, and then getting some uncredited English work as a spectator in that 1984 classic, Breakin'.

But then came No Retreat, No Surrender, where he played a Russian baddie opposite General Hospital and Guiding Light star Kurt McKinney, and the rest was history. He did all he could do in the action realm -- kickboxing revenge, jail, video game flicks, soldier, and even cracking walnuts with his butt.

These days, he's whipped up an insane amount of positive buzz with Jcvd and reinvigorated his career. But it all had to start somewhere.
