A fan-favorite voice actor from the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has opened up about his ideal ship from The Legend of Korra -- and it has nothing to do with romance.
During an appearance on the latest episode of the Avatar: Braving the Elements Podcast, legendary voice actor Dee Bradley Baker discussed the various fanships of different characters from The Legend of Korra. Rather than offering any romantic pairing of his own, however, Baker had a completely different kind of fanshipping in mind. "I don't think of it in terms of... romantically reframing a relationship.... Mine would be to have Tenzen and Beifong as President and Vice President of the United States.

Throughout his career, Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki has created anime films with independent, forward-thinking female protagonists, many of whom are viewed as idyllic role models for young women. According to Toshio Suzuki, who has served as Ghibli's main film producer since its founding, Miyazaki's admiration for women stems from his relationship with his mother.
Per The Observer, Suzuki recently sat down to an interview in the UK to discuss his decades-long partnership with Miyazaki, who is known primarily for works such as My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), PrincessMononoke (1997) and Spirited Away (2001). My Neighbor Totoro has long stood as one of Studio Ghibli's most beloved works, but for Hayao Miyazaki, the film carried a more personal weight, as he described the movie as being born from a feeling of "accumulating a debt."
Before working on My Neighbor Totoro, Miyazaki had directed two films, both of which were set in foreign or fictional regions. This made the legendary animator feel that he had accumulated a debt to Japan, the country where he was born and raised. "Up until now, I had continuously made works set in foreign countries or fictional countries of unknown nationality, and I gradually began to feel like I...

As co-founder of the esteemed Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki has worked on amazing anime and movies alike during his tenure, but one underrated success is getting access to a much larger screen. Sherlock Hound will be premiering in Japan’s theatres in the fall, and feature additional events to promote the series with former crew members.
Originally having aired in 1984, Sherlock Hound is a retelling of the Sherlock Holmes novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring anthropomorphic dogs as the characters within this classic series. Miyazaki worked on approximately six to eight episodes before disputes with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate led to a short hiatus, forcing his attention to new projects.

Hayao Miyazaki is known as a legendary movie director alongside Studio Ghibli for a good reason. His directorial work has a place in the hearts of fans as some of the most well-known and beloved movies of all time. However, two movies are often considered to be among Ghibli's masterpieces, despite having been made before the studio's founding. One of those is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Miyazaki's second major feature film as a director, based on his own manga of the same name.
Last year, two new art books were released in a new series that would showcase the image board displays for Miyazaki's various works. The first two of these were Hayao Miyazaki Imageboard Complete Works 1: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Hayao Miyazaki Imageboard Complete Works 2: Laputa: Castle in the Sky, while the third did the same for My Neighbor Totoro.

Gachiakuta is the upcoming Shonen anime that has garnered much intrigue amongst fans. But while fans are raving about it, not many of them might know that the inspiration behind the original manga actually came from a Ghibli film directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
Miyazaki has delivered beautiful and classic anime movies for decades and has become a maestro in his field. Thus, many creators have drawn inspiration from his works, and one of them is Kei Urana, the author of Gachiakuta.

Alright, anime fans, brace yourselves, because this might shake your Studio Ghibli-loving heart a little. When you think of the greatest anime movie of all time, you’re probably thinking of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It’s classic Hayao Miyazaki magic, period. You’ve got a fearless princess, giant bugs, toxic jungles, and a vibe about saving the world, total chef’s kiss.
It’s literally the movie that kicked off Studio Ghibli. No argument there. But Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe? You know, the guy who made space jazz sound so much cooler than any other show? Well, he doesn’t rate Nausicaä as the best anime movie of 1984. Nope. His favorite? Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer. Yes, the strange one with the alien girl and a time loop. Let’s unpack that wild pick.
So, what even is Beautiful Dreamer, and why is this Watanabe’s favorite anime movie?...

Princess Mononoke is considered to be a landmark film in Hayao Miyazaki’s filmography. It was the most expensive animated film at the time, using CGI and other digital techniques alongside hand-drawn animation. It also had one of the biggest marketing campaigns in Japan at the time. At the box office, the film broke several records to become the highest-grossing Japanese film.
Miyazaki’s themes explored in the film were also revolutionary, as it presented a feminist portrayal of characters. American studios were impressed with the performance of this Studio Ghibli film, and Disney secured the rights to distribute it.
Disney’s Miramax label was tasked with dubbing it into English and releasing it. Harvey Weinstein initially approached Quentin Tarantino to write the English screenplay, but he turned down the offer.

Studio Ghibli’s prestigious reputation consists of truths and exaggerations. The company has spent 40 years as a world leader in quality animation while independently funding projects based on prior successes — until their sale to Nippon TV in 2023.
Behind every great library of art is a machine that needs to sell it, and Ghibli, which turns 40 this June, is no different. A rare piece of Studio Ghibli artwork by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno has been rediscovered and will soon make its public debut.
Per Oricon, the image is an original layout of the heavy cruiser Maya, intended for Studio Ghibli's landmark anime movie Grave of the Fireflies, which Anno worked on as a key animator ahead of its 1988 premiere. The artwork will be exhibited at the Takahata Isao Exhibition: The Man Who Planted Japanese Animation, which opens June 27 at Azabudai Hills Gallery and runs through Sept. 15. Anno's Maya layout will be presented alongside a harmony cel based on the sketch, which features a painterly technique "for greater realism, resembling fine art."

Both Hayao Miyazaki and Hideaki Anno are maestros in the anime industry. But did you know that both knew each other? Their relationship dates back to the 1980s when Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was released. Anno was a huge part of the project as a fresher.
Anno appeared almost like a savior just 5 months before the release of Nausicaa when the entire team was beset with delays. He was a curious fella and a recent dropout who had captured the attention of Miyazaki himself. But Anno’s weird way of dropping out of the sky made Miyazaki interested in him, which only increased once he saw Anno’s way of living and art style.

Hayao Miyazaki is a true maverick when it comes to storytelling and animation. His ideas, thoughts, and approaches have shaped people’s outlook on life, art, and society as a whole. It isn’t surprising that his films inspire awe and self-reflection.
He blends fantastical elements with realism, which makes every story unique. The same goes for Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, who was in a league of his own. He gave us one of the most jarring movies, underlining the realities of war.
While both are seasoned animators, it was clear that Miyazaki was scared of his colleague. This had to do with Takahata’s different way of living and his key approach. But this also means that both Ghibli directors are visionaries in every aspect.

Oftentimes, movie makers change their style and appeal after becoming globally famous. In order to appeal to a larger audience base, they lose exactly what made them unique. But there are also directors and creators like Hideaki Anno and Hayao Miyazaki who cling to their sentiments and styles, never to bend to popular opinion.
And this is probably one of the reasons why directors like Anno and Miyazaki are so famous. They offer a quality that is unbeatable and unique, a flavor that can only be tasted in their works. This is why Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghibli movies are still such landmarks in the anime world.

The collection of anime films created by Hayao Miyazaki is recognized on a global level. Almost every Miyazaki movie has been a worldwide success, and some have even earned him awards and accolades of the highest level. But whenever the topic of Miyazaki and his works is discussed, fans only recall a handful of them, and one of them is Spirited Away.

From Hayao Miyazaki to Ichiro Itano, ‘Zenshu’ Is Mappa’s Love Letter to the Most Legendary Animators
Premiered earlier this year, Studio Mappa’s original anime, Zenshu, once again put the spotlight on the anime industry. Any mention of the Japanese animation industry sparks a mixed response from the audience. On one hand we have the bleaker aspects such as the debilitating working conditions, stereotypical representations, and fan service.
The flip side of that perception is the myriad worlds that have been brought to life with revered 2D animation. From cultural phenomena like the Big Three anime to comedy series like Nichijou and Gintama, the anime industry has allowed fans to experience a wide range of emotions.

It would not be unfair or incorrect to say that anime, as a medium, has actually influenced the lives of many. Zenshu brings the good, the bad, and the ugly all to life. However, the focus on the good is delightful and honors the legacy of renowned animators.

Generative AI is a branch of artificial intelligence which is trained off of a vast array of existing, human-created data, including text and images. It "creates" remixed content based on a user's prompts. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is the most widely-used generative AI tool. Recently, a ChatGPT trend was developed where users prompted the AI tool to generate images mimicking Studio Ghibli's iconic, thoughtfully crafted art style.
The Studio Ghibli filter sparked backlash and debate. The trend brings up ethical concerns about violating copyrighted works, and about its immense environmental impact. The co-founder of Studio Ghibli himself, Hayao Miyazaki, criticized AI in art heavily from its very inception. It's understandable to assume a simple Studio Ghibli trend would be innocuous, but it's important to understand the effects of generative AI on the things that are inherently important to humanity and should be taken into careful consideration, like art and the environment.

Fans of Hayao Miyazaki's 1984 film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind have been whispering about a possible sequel for some time. Studio Ghibli mastermind Hayao Miyazaki is known for his master storytelling and animation, but fans often point out that he sorta strays away from the source material when adapting manga or novels. Some of his most well-known adaptations include Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), based on Diana Wynne Jones’ novel of the same name, and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), loosely adapted from his own manga.

While both are masterpieces, both have been criticized for deviating from the original source material. Given this history, one might expect The Boy and the Heron (How Do You Live? in Japan) to be another questionable adaptation. However, in this case, Miyazaki’s decision to deviate from the original was the right one.

Frank Herbert's "Dune" is one of the biggest and most influential sci-fi books of all time. It has inspired everything from Hayao Miyazaki's "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" to "Star Wars," and so much more.
Though the "Dune" book series is full of fascinating, bizarre, influential ideas, the first book in particular remains a masterclass in telling a simple story that nevertheless contains a wealth of lore and world-building. Believe it or not, it’s really pointless to rate Hayao Miyazaki’s movies, considering how none of his films have ever received below 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, as per popular choice, Miyazaki’s 1984 animated movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, seemed to have earned a high Rotten score of 91% on the website.

Considering how most of his films turn out to be certified fresh by critics, the 1984 animation ended up being high on the Rotten score. But even then, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind being Hayao Miyazaki’s worst movie, the 2005 Disney dub of the manga ended up being Shia Labeouf’s best film of his 27-year-old acting career.

Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, and Neon Genesis Evangelion’s creator Hideaki Anno are two of the biggest names in the world of anime. While one is an Oscar-winning director, the other is the creator of one of the biggest franchises that helped shape the anime industry by earning worldwide recognition and fame.

The two share a bond that might feel complex in the eyes of an outsider, but it is safe to say that they are the perfect definition of a mentor-student relationship. Miyazaki and Anno have worked together in the past and thus have developed a friendship where Miyazaki can say anything to Anno, and the creator of Evangelion can criticize Miyazaki’s works openly.
The perfect explanation of their relationship is seen through a video, which is going around the internet, where Miyazaki is seen taunting Anno while they are...

Studio Ghibli has delighted fans for generations, producing such iconic films such as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service, yet many viewers only think of Hayao Miyazaki when they think of Studio Ghibli. However, the studio owes much of its depth, artistry and emotional resonances — and indeed, even the studio’s origins — to its co-founder, Isao Takahata.
Often overshadowed by his more commercially prolific and well-known counterpart, Takahata was a master storyteller and artistic visionary in his own right. His contributions to Studio Ghibli, his impact on the world of animation and his legacy continue to live on in an immeasurable manner. And while not often mentioned in the same breath as Studio Ghibli — like Hayao Miyazaki tends to be — Isao Takahata defined Studio Ghibli as we know it today just as much as Miyazaki did.

Everyone in the anime community hails Hayao Miyazaki as the one director who writes women well. The female protagonists of Studio Ghibli films are role models for anime fans who are longing for great representation without any s*xualization.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was one of Miyazaki’s earliest films directed and written by him. Even the original manga was all his brilliant mind. The titular protagonist of the film is one of his most beloved too.

The portrayal of Nausicaä isn’t black and white, she’s incredibly complex and seeks understanding rather than violence, despite living in a dangerous world. She values all living beings and her sense of adventure attracts the audience.
