    Flawed but fascinating adaptation.

So I hadn't seen this in years since watching it in 8th grade during a study of the book, and from my memory, I thought this was like an 8, but on rewatch, I didn't like it as much as I remembered? Like the story feels meandering in a way that I'm sure works better in the original book (also need to give that a reread, man), and I feel like only some scenes work and have the impact they are supposed to.

BUT the film is very well cast, with a lot of actors who mostly embody the characters really well; I personally think Tom Cruise is the exception, he's kind of distracting in how over the top he is compared to the others, but everyone else is great, especially Matt Dillon and Ralph Macchio, like...damn, Johnny's whole storyline hits hard just by the way Macchio plays it.

Also a fan of the heavy stylization here, I do kind of wish it was a bit more consistently stylized? But certain scenes just have this artificial sheen to them that kinda adds to them, like the use of rear projection and overly stylized camera angles and backgrounds. I need to watch more of Coppola's work because, from what I have seen, his work, especially the stuff from this period, has a very idiosyncratic, consistent stylization to it that's always really cool to see, I like it a lot.

Overall, not a bad film at all! It's a flawed but fascinating and accurate adaptation of a classic book, one that maybe doesn't work the best as a film, but I admire the chutzpah of Coppola to at least try and make it work, and it does more often than it doesn't.

Feels like the school essay that it started out as

With this adaptation of S. E. Hinton's debut novel "The Outsiders", Francis Ford Coppola introduced a whole new generation of actors, who would go on to become some of Hollywood's biggest stars over the course of the next few years and decades. The story is a coming-off-age tale set in an unspecified American town during the early 1960s, where the dividing line between the north and south side of town, between the working-class "greasers" and the upper-class "socs", defined the upbringing, youth years and prospects for the future for all the characters we get to meet. Focusing on the greasers - and more on the ties and comradery between them than on the greaser culture as such - The Outsiders is a tenderhearted, unobtrusive film full of semi-obvious observations and character-developments. As such, it feels like the school essay that the novel more or less started out as. Still, the film has a perception and understanding for these kids, their time and their surroundings that makes it resonant and believable. Artistically, this is by no means Coppola's best work, and all of these actors would go on to deliver better work later on in their careers, but their characters and their performances have stood the test of time quite well. Look for Coppola's pal Tom Waits in a cameo as a bouncer in a bar. C. Thomas Howell won the Young Artist Award for Best Young Motion Picture Actor for his performance as Ponyboy Curtis.

When trouble finds you, don't back down.

A gem from Francis Ford Coppola based on S.E. Hinton's novel. Teenage gang members in a mid 60's Oklahoma town become involved in murder, leading to tragic consequences for all concerned. Filmed mostly in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a very impressive list of young actors on their way to stardom.

The cast includes Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe and Tom Cruise. Also featured are Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane, C. Thomas Howell, Gailard Sartain and Ralph Macchio.

A coming of age movie that packs a punch. Very much worth your time.

Not a bad adaptation of an outstanding novel

The Outsiders is my all-time favorite book and I had been waiting for months to rent the movie. When I finally saw it, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. Although the novel is a very fast-moving story, I thought that some of the scenes in the movie went by just a little too fast, and sometimes the music seemed out of place. I also really disliked the trail scene. It was not at all what I was expecting. Some of the acting was poor in some points as well, but overall, I thought the cast did a good job. I thought that Matt Dillon did an outstanding job as Dallas Winston, though.

If you loved S. E. Hinton's book, then I would definitely recommend seeing this, just don't get your hopes up too high. Even if you didn't like the book, although I'm not sure if that is even possible =), I would recommend this movie because of the cast. Even though most of the acting wasn't absolutely incredible, it's fun to see how a lot of big actors (such as Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, and Patrick Swazye) started off their careers.

    It's a good adaptation

"The Outsiders" is about two gangs, the Socs and the Greasers. It focuses on a young greaser named Ponyboy, and what living the gang life is like for him. Although it has good cinematography and a real good score, the characters speak in accents and lingo that make it a tad bit hard to understand what's happening, and it doesn't help that sometimes the pace is too quick for the film's own good. This results in a movie that may be a bit difficult for people who haven't read the book to understand, although there are probably some who never read the book but understood the movie. If you did read the book, it's a good adaptation. You also feel sympathy and emotion for all of the characters. I recommend that you watch it nonetheless. 7/10.

In the poster for the film, the Greasers are laughing as Johnny is smirking. This candid shot was taken during the photo session where the actors were supposed to look tough at the camera. What happened was that when Leif Garrett went to the craft services table for a snack, Ralph Macchio said, "Hey, Leif, that's for the talent." This comment cracked up the cast, and the photo was used.
