According to the DVD commentary by Hong Kong movie expert Bey Logan, this is a dated in-joke: the film's original Chinese audience would have been amused because that style of banknote was very old-fashioned when the film was first released, adding to Tang Lung's "country bumpkin" image.

In the time of VHS all Bruce Lee classics were only released as more or less censored versions in the UK. As one can imagine, the nunchakus used by Bruce Lee weren't popular with the censors of the BBFC and accordingly Lee's second last film Way Of The Dragon had to suffer the most. The brawl in the backyard where said weapons are used excessively is only a fragment of the original scene. But also many other scene have been altered, mainly when they involve attacks on defenseless men lying on the ground. In any case, this is the Bruce Lee film that was censored the most and a good example of what martial arts fans had to cope with in the time of VHS.

There was no violence removed from the US-version , but there was one long plot scene taken away. The soup-scene was cut.

There were scenes that were strangely cut from the version released by CBS/FOX video, including:

• Tang Lung scaring the little girl with the ice cream cone.

• Tang eating in the airport cafeteria.

• Tang asking Chen Ching-hua where the airport restroom is.

• some of the dialogue between Tang and Ching-hua when they are driving from the airport to her apartment, as well as Ching-hua pointing out the headquarters of the syndicate while en route.

• Tang going with the Italian woman to her home.

• Tang using the restroom at Ching-hua's restaurant, where the customer looks at him curiously.

• the thugs ordering the same customer to leave at knifepoint.

• the waiters arguing about how best to handle the thugs, with the waiter Jimmy taunting Tang, right before another group of thugs come in.

• Uncle Wang ordering the waiters back to work after they vow to give up karate in order to train under Tang, followed by Ching-hua asking Tang to keep an eye out for the thugs should they return.
