Skirts Ahoy!

Modifier
  • Whitney Young: You said the one thing in your life was Dick.
  • Mr. Yarbrough: How was Dick? How did he act?
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: Nervous.
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: I'm going to unload my things and then run into town for a little unfeminine fresh air.
  • Una Yancy: I have come to a decision. If we're all we've got, there's something wrong.
  • Whitney Young: You're so right.
  • Whitney Young, Una Yancy: [singing] Enough is enough, We're sick of this stuff, We're tellin' you Bub, That this is the rub
  • Whitney Young, Una Yancy, Mary Kate Yarbrough: We've gotta go out and get ourselves a guy! It's time we all went out on an amorous bender, Went out and got loaded up with the opposite gender...
  • Whitney Young: The trouble is men can go anywhere, they can do anything they want.
  • Una Yancy: [gesturing to Whitney, Mary Kate, and herself] Well, sailors candy anything! Oh, manager, can you tell us the name of a very nice cocktail place - the kind where women are admitted, but, grudgingly.
  • Tearoom Manager: The Mahogany Room at the Blakely. It was a men's bar till last month, when a new management took over and ruined it.
  • Whitney Young: Look, why beat around the bush, you're alone and I'm alone and we have to have dinner, so, why not together?
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: I hoped you wouldn't do it again just as I knew you hadn't done it belore.
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: Without Dick? It's different for you.
  • Una Yancy: What are you doing here? Getting away from it all?
  • Whitney Young: Well, in a manner of speaking. What are you doing here?
  • Una Yancy: It all got away from me. So, I'm looking for it.
  • Whitney Young: What's it's name?
  • Una Yancy: Archie O'Conovan, United States Navy.
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: [after being jilted at the alter by Dick] He said, "Don't you feel as if you're missing something? Wouldn't you like to travel, see things, and live a little?"
  • Mr. Yarbrough: What did you answer?
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: Well, I said, "Dear, I want to do anything you want to do."
  • Mr. Yarbrough: Well, that's certainly the right answer.
  • Dick Hallson: Mary Kate, you know you can't be a sailor. You've got to be independent and tough and maybe go to strange cities and live by yourself and work hard. I'm surprised you lasted this long.
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: I don't want anybody to do me a favor and marry me because I'm helpless and spineless and a dope!
  • Dick Hallson: I never said you were a dope.
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: Well, I was. Only, I'm not going to be any more.
  • Mr. Yarbrough: Oh, go blow your bugle!
  • Capt. Graymont: When you start calling a stomach a tummy and you realize you're beginning to know what powder base is good for dry skin, *that's* when it gets scary.
  • Una Yancy: Oh, I like the way he did that. Smooth.
  • Whitney Young: It shows he has tact.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: By the way, what's your name?
  • Whitney Young: Smith. Mary Smith.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: Isn't that funny? My name is Smith too. John Smith.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: Why don't we go somewhere else, somewhere quiet and cosy where we can *really* relax, huh? Of course, you don't have to if you don't want to; but, after all, you are a sailor, aren't you?
  • Whitney Young: Well, yes, but...
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: Of course, if you're nervous...
  • Whitney Young: Who's nervous?
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: I'm not.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: I suppose you have all sorts of ways of getting around things.
  • Whitney Young: Oh, nothing. It just takes a little talent.
  • Billy Eckstein: [singing] Though love is blind, Your straying fingertips, Will discover, Yielding lips of your lover...
  • Una Yancy: Of course, knowing all the angles helps. And all the goldbricking helps. But, it is a little restricting, if you know what I mean. For example, in our barracks its restricted to women. Nothing but dames!
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: [looking at Whitney] I can't say you strike me as a woman's woman.
  • Whitney Young: I've never struck myself that way either.
  • Una Yancy: It's funny. Why is it that there are lots of men's men; but, hardly any women's women? And if there were, would this be good thing or not?
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: When I sent for you Young, I was going to talk to you about last night. I was going to tell you that while I understood it was just an impulse and lots of fun, it was also little silly and very reckless.
  • Bobby Van, Debbie Reynolds: [singing] They all spoke with a different lingo, But, they all loved, oh, by jingo, And every night, sang in the pale moonlight, Oh, by gee, by gosh, by gum, by jove, Oh, by jingo, Won't you hear our love...
  • Lt. Cmdr. Stauton: There's an old proverb: Man who pauses to quarrel with rain for being wet, gets wetter.
  • Una Yancy: It isn't everyday you get to met a guy who looks so bright and ain't so bright.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: Yancy, are you trying to apple polish me?
  • Thatcher Kinston: Your Commander Stauton, she's worried about you. Afraid you've gone sour lately.
  • Whitney Young: On myself, maybe, not on the WAVES.
  • Thatcher Kinston: Couldn't be a man, could it? Not in this hen coop.
  • Whitney Young: Did you ever see a hen coop without a rooster?
  • Whitney Young: Is that Dick?
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: Until I get through with him, that's Dick.
  • [Whitney laughs]
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: What's so funny?
  • Whitney Young: Nothing, Tiger woman. Nothing at all.
  • Whitney Young: All you got was one postcard from Archie and he said he thought he was going to France.
  • Una Yancy: Listen, my Archie don't think for nothin'.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Stauton: You've learned what many girls don't have a chance to learn. That there are other people in the world, besides yourself. But, women don't have to be dependent, weak sisters, catty, back-biting, or the natural enemies of each other. In other words, that women can be friends.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: I just like to do my own hunting, that's all.
  • Whitney Young: But, wouldn't a hunter be pleased if a rabbit walked right up to him and said here I am?
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: Shows you don't know anything about hunting. Half of the fun is staking out something for yourself!
  • Whitney Young: [to Paul] You're the one who makes me do things like this.
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: He told her how wonderful she was and how sorry he was even such a boob.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: Up to now I've lived a reasonably pleasant life. The pleasantest part of which has been choosing the women *I* want and chasing them. I like it that way. I'm going to keep it that way. Can't you get that through your silly, spoiled head?
  • Whitney Young: You're both a couple of goodies.
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: Well, come with us if we're such goodies.
  • Una Yancy: Oh, please, Whit.
  • Pop the Plumber: There's just some things that sort of lick ya.
  • Una Yancy: You can't miss what you haven't got.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Paul Elcott: Have you ever dug a hole and found yourself at the bottom of it?
  • Mary Kate Yarbrough: It's awful when nothing comes of something.
  • WAVE Instructor: Young! Turn in your water wings!
