Anmol Ghadi

A love-triangle romance with reformist overtones set partly in Bombay. Impoverished hero Chander (Surendra) and rich heroine Laila (Nurjehan) are childhood sweethearts separated when Lailas parents move to Bombay. Later, Chander moves there when his rich friend Prakash (Zahur Raja) finds him work in a musical instruments shop. By then, Lata has become a famous poetess going by the name of Renu and is engaged to Prakash. Latas friend Basanti (Suraiya) falls in love with Chander but he remains true to his childhood girl and walks away into the sunset (with Basanti running after him). Although Mehboob made other triangular romances (Hum Tum Aur Woh, 1938; Najma, 1943 etc.), this film started his investigations of patriarchy, shown as masquerading under eternal values (of Anokhi Ada, 1948; Andaz 1949). Anmol Ghadi (1946) : Brief Review -

Perhaps, the Greatest Love-triangle and The Greatest Love-tragedy Ever made in Bollywood. Anmol Ghadi is probably the second great thing coming from Mehboob Khan after Aurat (1940), well i am not sure because i am yet to his several films made between those 6 years so in the confirmed words i can say it's a film that concreted his supremacy. So, hero is from poor family, heroine is from rich family and both love each other since childhood. After some years hero migrates to City for job but finds his childhood love there just after when heroine's friend falls in love with the hero. The fourth angle in this Love Triangle is Hero's best friend whose marriage is fixed with heroine. Ok, so we have seen this formula in many films over the years but believe me the climax of Anmol Ghadi is just unbeatable. No love triangle or tragic love story comes close to the heartbreaking climax of this film. You see, it has became habitual for us that we easily predict the happy ending in such films when we know hero and heroine will join each other at the end, no matter how difficult situations are but Anmol Ghadi broke this myth much before it was born. The friendship value and sacrifice have been used in postive manners in almost all love triangles for years, from Sangam of 70s to Saajan in 90s and many more but there was only one director in India who showed the real burn at the end with films like Anmol Ghadi and Andaz (1949). Anmol Ghadi has a fine cast and great screenplay but the most impressive thing is the dialogues. The allegorical and ornamental vocabulary used for dialogues is way ahead of its time and the best as well. Naushad's Music is phenomenal and a special mention to meaningful lyrics. Overall, it's another Supreme Classic by Mehboob Khan that deserves to become a Record Grosser. Truly Incredible (Anmol).
