Cannes Late Additions Include Eugene Jarecki’s Julian Assange Doc ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’
Image
The Cannes Film Festival has added a handful of films to its official selection just days ahead of the 78th festival, which kicks off on Tuesday. Among the last-minute entries is Eugene Jarecki‘s Julian Assange documentary feature, The Six Billion Dollar Man, which will receive a special screening.

The Six Billion Dollar Man had been set to screen at Sundance this year, but was pulled weeks before the festival with Jarecki saying he needed to incorporate “significant recent and unexpected developments” into the film before releasing it.

Resurrection, a sci-fi detective movie from Chinese director Bi Gan (Long Day’s Journey Into Night), is a late addition to this year’s competition. The film, starring Jackson Yee (Better Days) and Shu Qi (The Assassin), is being shopped at the Cannes market by Les Films du Losange.

Other 11th-hour additions were Martin Bourboulon’s 13 jours, 13 nuits, which will play Out Of Competition,...

Cannes Festival Adds More Films, Including Eugene Jarecki’s Julian Assange Doc ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man,’ Bi Gan’s ‘Resurrection,’ Martin Bourboulon’s ’13 Days, 13 Nights’
Image
The Cannes Film Festival has added a final film to the competition, Bi Gan’s anticipated “Resurrection,” as well as Eugene Jarecki’s Julian Assange documentary “The Six Billion Dollar Man” in Special Screenings and Martin Bourboulon’s “13 Days, 13 Nights” out of competition.

The festival has also added Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret’s “Ma Frere” to Cannes Premiere.

“The Six Billion Dollar Man,” which follows Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, was pulled from Sundance earlier this year due to what Jareki described in a statement as “unexpected developments” in the story. The synopsis for “The Six Billion Dollar Man” reads: “Julian Assange faced a possible 175 years in prison for exposing U.S. war crimes until events took a turn in this landmark case.” Jareki previously won Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize twice, in 2005 for “Why We Fight” and again in 2012 for “The House I Live In.”

‘3 Body Problem’ Helmer Derek Tsang Bullish on Asian Co-Productions Despite Market Struggles
Image
It’s been a tough few years in the Asian film market since the pandemic, but “3 Body Problem” and “Better Days” director Derek Tsang believes that we can expect growth in Asian co-productions, with grants and regional tie-ups playing a growing role in boosting the sector.

“I can see that many filmmakers are already exploring the possibilities of co-producing films with other regions and their producers. Even our government in Hong Kong is encouraging filmmakers to explore the opportunity by providing schemes that grants co-productions with other countries,” Tsang told Variety in an interview at the recently concluded Hong Kong FilMart.

Tsang began working as an actor in Hong Kong in 2002, and made his directorial debut with “Lover’s Discourse” in 2010. He became the first Hong Kong helmer to earn an Oscar nomination for his 2019 drama “Better Days” – it was nominated for best international feature film at the 93rd Academy Awards,...

Actors Who Were Almost Cast As Star Trek's Geordi La Forge Before LeVar Burton
Image
When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" first began in 1987, LeVar Burton was probably the biggest star in the cast. He had already been nominated for three Emmys, once in 1977 for playing Kunta Kinte in the celebrated miniseries "Roots," and two more in 1985 and 1986 for hosting the beloved book-based kid program "Reading Rainbow." The latter show would end up netting him 12 Emmy wins between 1990 and 2007, and cement his reputation as one of his generation's preeminent TV celebrities. The fact that he would be selected to play chief engineer Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek" only more deeply entrenched Burton in the public's awareness.

Geordi La Forge was, more than anything, a nerd. He was deeply interested in machines and engines, and Burton was given the lion's share of NextGen's nonsensical polysyllabic technobabble. He was also notoriously undersexed. Geordi was equipped with a visor that tapped directly into his brain, feeding him...

“Janet Jackson: Las Vegas” is the follow-up to 2019’s “Metamorphosis” at Park MGM and closely follows the playbook of her 2023-24 “Together Again” tour, with night one carrying some major surprises with both live debuts and songs not performed live in many years. While some artists stack their Vegas residencies with the greatest hits, Jackson’s setlist is more like an encyclopedia of her career — two hours, 43 songs, iconic choreography and a recall of many of the fashion moments that made her a pop culture icon.

Swifties Reignite Feud With Zach Bryan After Brianna Chickenfry Allegations
Image
Now, go stand in the corner and think about what you did — that’s the message Taylor Swift’s fans seem to have for Zach Bryan following his tumultuous split from Brianna “Chickenfry” Lapaglia and her claims that the singer-songwriter emotionally abused her.

The bad blood (sorry) between Bryan and Swifties, of course, has its own recent origins, back when Bryan fired off a spicy tweet: “eagles > chiefs Kanye > Taylor who’s with me.” (Music aside, Bryan is a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan, and his team did lose to Travis Kelce...

Bruce Springsteen Opens Post-Election Concert With “Fighting Prayer for My Country”
Image
Bruce Springsteen took the stage in Toronto on Wednesday for a post-election concert that was equal parts defiant and cathartic.

Springsteen opened the set with “Long Walk Home,” a song that he described as a” fighting prayer for my country.” Taken from his 2007 album Magic, “Long Walk Home” explores themes of disillusionment and America’s abandonment of freedom, decency, and civil liberties.

From there, Springsteen and the E Street Band performed “Land of Hope and Dreams” with an outro tag of “People Get Ready”; “Lonesome Day”; “Adam Raised a Cain”; “Better Days”; “The Promised Land”; “Reason to Believe”; and “Darkness on the Edge of Town.”

Springsteen had endorsed Kamala Harris for president. In doing so, he called Donald Trump “most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime.” The New Jersey rocker also performed at a pair of campaign rallies on behalf of Harris.

Escape At Dannemora Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
Apart from walking through a gripping prison escape drama, Escape at Dannemora also features several scintillating background scores that add more heft to its storytelling. Directed by Ben Stiller, Escape at Dannemora follows the true story of the 2015 Clinton Correctional Facility escape. Like most prison break and heist narratives, the show takes its time to fully immerse audiences in its central drama. However, the viewer's patience pays off in its final episodes when it finally reveals how the central escape plan unfolded after immense planning and plotting.

Escape at Dannemora's boasts a talented cast, including Benicio del Toro, Patricia Arquette, and Paul Dano, among others. Other than walking through the real-life events of Richard Matt & David Sweat's prison break and featuring great performances, the show also makes good use of its background scores. In its seven-episode runtime, it features many songs that effectively underscore the emotional heft and high stakes of its story.

Busan Jury President Mohammad Rasoulof Says German Oscar Submission For ‘The Seed Of The Sacred Fig’ Should Give Other Filmmakers Hope
Image
Mohammad Rasoulof, president of the New Currents jury at this year’s Busan International Film Festival, said that Germany’s selection of his latest work, The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, as this year’s Oscars submission should offer hope to other filmmakers working under strict censorship conditions.

Rasoulof is currently living in exile in Germany after fleeing Iran on the eve of this year’s Cannes film festival – where The Seed Of The Sacred Fig screened in competition and won a Special Award – after Iranian authorities sentenced him to eights years imprisonment for making the film without a permit.

Germany subsequently selected the film as its submission for the Best International Feature category of the Oscars. There was zero chance that Iran’s government-influenced Oscars selection committee would have chosen the film.

“The investors of the film were German, and the producer was from Germany, so although the film is Iranian,...

Xin Huo’s ‘Bound in Heaven’ Speaks to Domestic Violence and Love
Image
San Sebastian – “Bound in Heaven,” the directorial debut of experienced screenwriter Xin Huo, best known for “Kung Fu Hustle,” is the sole Chinese production in the Official Selection at San Sebastián, following its world premiere in Toronto’s Centrepiece section. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Li Xiuwen, a Huading Award winner as part of the writing team for “Medal of the Republic.”

The story turns on Xia You (NiNi), a successful but emotionally drained woman trapped in a violently abusive relationship with her fiancé, played by Liao Fan, who won a Berlin Silver Bear for “Black Coal, Thin Ice.” In a harrowing early scene, Xia You defies her abuser, uttering the chilling and foreboding line, “Don’t smudge my makeup, the guests are still here,” a reflection of the fragile facade she is forced to uphold.

“The theme of domestic violence against women,...

Korea Box Office: ‘I, The Executioner’ Reaches $40 Million After Second Weekend, as ‘Begin Again’ Enjoys Return
Image
Local blockbuster “I The Executioner” dominated the South Korea box office for a second weekend. Its cumulative total reached $40 million after ten days on release.

The film, a sequel to 2015 crime comedy drama “The Veteran,” “I, The Executioner” released a week earlier with little serious opposition from new release titles. Those conditions held true in the film’s second weekend, and the film’s first non-holiday frame.

Between the latest Friday and Sunday, the film earned $6.63 million, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Its 10-day cumulative is $40.7 million, earned from 5.61 million spectators.

The weekend figures represent a steep 56% week-on-week decline. But the comparison is atypical as the previous weekend represented the first few days of a five-day holiday. The film’s market share remained dominant, at over 71%.

Chuseok was a mixed bag for the cinema industry. Kofic reports that spectator numbers for the five-day period,...

Korea Box Office: ‘I, The Executioner’ Kills It With $15 Million Debut, Dominates Early Holiday Season
Image
Crime action film ‘I The Executioner” topped the South Korea cinema box office weekend with an utterly dominant $15 million haul. The session represented the first half of a long holiday in Korea.

Data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic) showed that the film enjoyed a market share of 86% between Friday and Sunday. It was watched by 2.09 million spectators.

That represented the second biggest opening weekend score by any film this year in Korea, behind the $20.8 million attained by “The Roundup: Punishment” in late April. Nationwide, the latest weekend was the third-highest Friday-Sunday session of 2024, at $17.5 million, behind the first two weekends of release of “Punishment.”

The film known locally as “Veteran 2,” is a sequel to “Veteran,” which released in August 2015 and shares the same writer-director Ryoo Seung-wan and lead actor Hwang Jung-min as the new picture. “Veteran” earned $78.4 million from 13.4 million spectators, making...

Korea Box Office: ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Opens Fifth Behind a Panda Documentary as Pre-Holiday Theatrical Business Stalls
Image
Cinema box office in South Korea amounted to a dismal $5.45 million over the weekend, propelling “Alien: Romulus” back to top spot, despite the film’s steep week-on-week decline. Among new releases there was joy for a Korean-produced panda documentary and disappointment for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”

“Alien: Romulus” earned $905,000 between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. That represented a 45% week-on-week decline and market share of less than 17%, but it pushed the horror franchise title to a $14.0 million cumulative since releasing on Aug. 14.

Early September has historically been a weak spot on the calendar for Korean cinema business as the summer season fades out and the biggest local titles delay their releases until the Chuseok (or Korean thanksgiving) holiday season towards the end of the month. The latest Friday-Sunday aggregate followed that seasonal pattern and represented the third weakest weekend haul of the year.

Chinese Director Bi Gan’s Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Resurrection’ Boarded by Les Films du Losange (Exclusive)
Image
Paris-based sales and distribution company Les Films du Losange has boarded “Resurrection,” a sci-fi detective movie directed by Chinese director Bi Gan, whose 2018 film “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” played at Cannes.

Headlined by Chinese-language stars Jackson Yee (“Better Days”) and Shu Qi (“The Assassin”), the movie recently wrapped the second part of its shooting schedule. It is expected to resume filming in the fourth quarter of this year.

“Resurrection” tells the story of a woman whose consciousness falls into the “eternal time zone” during a surgical procedure. Trapped in many dreams, she finds an android corpse and tries to wake it up by telling it stories. The android then wanders through her stories and its senses gradually awaken.

Co-produced by Charles Gillibert’s CG Cinema, the project marks Bi’s first film since “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” which contained a bravura final 59-minute sequence consisting of a single shot in 3D.

TIFF Market Screenings Offer “Three-Dimensional” View of Contemporary China
Image
Five Chinese productions are being presented in market screenings on the sidelines of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival in an effort, organizers of the program say, to give North American audiences a “three-dimensional” view into contemporary China.

Put together by the China Film Co-Production Corporation (Cfcc), the selection includes comedian Da Peng’s box office hit Post Truth ($98 million), which focuses on how a former gang boss-turned-burial plot salesman deals with online rumors.

There’s also the pandemic lockdown-themed romance Embrace Again from director Xue Xiaolu, whose breakthrough rom-com Finding Mr. Right (2013) was famously credited with an upsurge in Chinese tourism to Seattle.

Two romance-tinged films from director Yan are also screening this week: Love Never Ends, a tale of old-age friendship and love with a winning turn from Hong Kong action veteran Tony Leung Ka-fai (Election), and Viva La Vida, which follows the relationship that develops between...

DC Admits the One Bat-Family Member Batman Will Never Accept
Image
Red Hood is not considered core Bat-Family by Batman due to past conflicts. Batman's treatment of Red Hood has been brutal, including manipulating his mind. Despite forgiveness, Red Hood remains an outsider in the Bat-Family.

Since the Bat-Family is, after all, led by Batman, he ultimately gets to say who is or isn't in the family. Batman has pretty strict rules for this, but a look into the future shows the final few characters that he truly considers family, and unfortunately, it seems Red Hood isn't one of them.

In the story "Better Days" by Peter J. Tomasi and Ian Bertram from Detective Comics #27, the Bat-Family has gathered for Bruce's 75th birthday, and it seems that everyone who Bruce considers close family is there: Tim Drake, Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, and Alfred Pennyworth. There's no denying that these are the core Bat-Family members.

While there are several absences,...
