Superb film! Learned a lot about the history of Southern Africa through the lens of a love story. The acting was great.
Never have I had a film captivate me as much as 'The White Line' did. As I sat in anticipation, I was fearful, I was angry, I was disgusted and I felt sad. The joy and the overwhelming pride I felt, as it fundamentally told our story, our Namibian story, is indescribable.
Set in 1963, 'The White Line' tells the story of illicit love between a black domestic worker and a white police officer after the Old Location uprising. The two subconsciously went against society's norms and found solace in love in an era where love was restricted to you only loving your kind. The storyline was solid and consistent throughout. The lead actors Girley Jazama and Jan-Barend Scheepers, including the rest of the cast, embodied their roles and did it so beautifully. Scheepers, like everyone in the room, shed tears during the closing scene, a scene that spoke volumes.

Period piece... namibia, 1963. Pretty rough times for blacks in africa. Working in terrible conditions for the whites under apartheid. Silvie's white boss sends her on errands she knows silvie will not be allowed to complete in a white-only shop. But her boss's brother is much more understanding and kind. And they form a close relationship. Too close for the times. This film focuses more on their relationship and the difficulties, and less on the violence and deaths during the uprisings. Well done.. they cover a lot of ground, and end up back near present day. Written and directed by desiree kahikopo meiffret. This has the feel of someone's own life story, being told in safer times.
Watching this not knowing what I was getting into, I was VERY pleasantly surprised.
The acting was great all round, from the starcrossed multiracial central couple that were never meant to be, to the guy's racist sister who's one of the most repugnant individuals I've seen on screen in quite some time.
For a low budget film made in Africa, it's very well shot too, particularly a pivotal dinner room scene when the camera spins about a round table when tensions move to a head.
I don't know what else to say... the plot had me gripped from beginning to end, the period detail felt spot on and whilst there may be certain plot holes which aren't quite ever filled in, for a film which I approached with low expectations this surpassed them and then some.
A 7/10 all the way.
