Chile’s Alfredo Castro Preps Directorial Debut, ‘Los Trabajadores de la Muerte’ (Exclusive)
Image
Chilean actor Alfredo Castro will make his directorial debut with the psychological thriller “Los Trabajadores de la Muerte,” which translates to “the workers of death.”

Based on Diamela Eltit’s novel of the same title, the film is penned by Castro and Pablo Valledor. Chile’s Storyboard Media and Les Films de l’Âge d’Or in France co-produce.

Producer and co-writer Valledor tells Variety the project is representative of his larger goal to ramp up international co-productions: “As a producer, my intention is to get involved in projects that present a radical approach and an attractive cinematic language,” he explained. “The aim of Les Films de l’Âge d’Or is to establish a structure dedicated to projects of this nature, creating a bridge between the Americas and Europe to ensure that funds are obtained and that these films are made through well-established international co-productions.”

Set during Chile’s economic crisis...

Sanfic Honors Pablo Larrain Regular Alfredo Castro with Career Achievement Award
Image
The 18th Santiago Int’l Film Festival (Sanfic) is paying tribute to Chile’s most internationally renowned and arguably hardest working actor, the peripatetic Alfredo Castro who will attend Sanfic’s inauguration Aug. 14 to receive his lifetime achievement award and kick off a retrospective of his films.

Also a playwright and theater director, Castro has worked across Europe and Latin America, acting in French, Spanish, Portuguese and a number of accents and dialects from Latin America, including neutral Spanish. “I haven’t worked in English but I certainly hope to one day,” he says. Meanwhile, he has won a boatload of awards from festivals and award events across the world.

Yet, he would also be high up the order of figures who have helped shape Chile’s post-Pinochet film, theater and now TV scene into one of the most vibrant, surprising and constantly questioning of any country in Latin America.

Latin Grammy Nominee Pablo Chill-e Cast in ‘Kaye,’ From ‘Perro Bomba’ Director Juan Cáceres (Exclusive)
Image
The Chilean director-producer team of Juan Cáceres, Alejandro Ugarte and Esteban Sandoval are back in Guadalajara, where their first feature “Perro Bomba” dominated the 2018 Guadalajara Construye works in progress section, scooping the Chemistry, Yagán, Mondragon-Disruptiva and Habanero awards, ensuring a strong post-production and aiding in the film’s highly successful international festival run.

Variety can now announce that Chilean trap superstar and Latin Grammy Awards nominee Pablo Chill-e and his younger sister Javiera Rojas Leiva, an aspiring amateur actress and singer herself, will star in Cáceres’ upcoming film “Kaye,” pitching as a project at this year’s Guadalajara Co-Production Meetings.

At only 20 years old, Chill-e is pushing 1 million subscribers on YouTube and has surpassed 1.2 million on Instagram, fueled by hits like “Vibras,” “Pensando En Ti” and “Hablamos Mañana” with Bad Bunny and Duki, which was nominated for Best Urban Fusion/Performance at the Latin American Grammys.

San Sebastian Film Review: ‘Some Beasts’
The family vacation gone awry is such a routinely fraught, fruitful dramatic setup that it practically qualifies as its own genre. Yet while various horror films might bring external threats into proceedings, Chilean helmer Jorge Riquelme Serrano’s exceptionally poised, frozen-hearted “Some Beasts” finds all the danger it needs in the family itself: a well-to-do clan of urbanites who, once detached from the mainland on a remote island getaway, abandon all semblance of civility to escalatingly violent, abusive effect. — Riquelme Serrano’s sophomore film will divide audiences, not all of whom will gladly stomach its most extreme scenes of sexual assault and emotional cruelty.

While international distributors weigh up the risks and rewards of the project, “Some Beasts” should continue to be a festival-circuit talking point, with its profile boosted by the presence of leading Chilean thesps Paulina Garcia and Alfredo Castro atop the ensemble. They alone make the film...
