Too Funny to Fail: The Life & Death of The Dana Carvey Show

‘Playing Potus’ Documentary: Maya Rudolph, Dana Carvey, Will Ferrell, Alec Baldwin, Keegan-Michael Key To Tell All About Presidential Parodies
Image
Exclusive: No joke, here’s the deal, and let me be clear: Dana Carvey, fresh off his latest hilarious sendup of a doddering President Biden, will appear in the upcoming documentary Playing Potus, from director Josh Greenbaum.

The film currently in production from EverWonder Studio in partnership with Delirio Films and Green Bomb Productions will include new interviews with Carvey, whose impressions have ranged from Joe Biden to George H.W. Bush, Ross Perot, and Bill Clinton; Maya Rudolph, currently rocking it as Kamala Harris on SNL; Alec Baldwin (Pres. Trump); Will Ferrell (Pres. George W. Bush – remember “Strategery”?), Keegan-Michael Key (Pres. Obama and his alter ego “Luther”); Jay Pharoah (also Pres. Obama); Darrell Hammond; Chevy Chase (a supremely klutzy Gerald Ford), and more.

“The film will tackle the uniquely American tradition of presidential parody, a bold art form that has transformed our...

Behind the Scenes of ‘Will & Harper’: 9 Things That Might Surprise You About Making the Road-Trip Doc
Image
While on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, director Josh Greenbaum took IndieWire behind the scenes of the planning, making, and editing of his new hit documentary “Will & Harper.” The documentary, which premiered at Sundance and hit Netflix last week, is a road trip film, as comedian Will Ferrell takes a cross-country journey with long-time friend and collaborator Harper Steele after she came out as a transwoman. The journey serves as a way for the two friends to explore how the will affect their friendship, while Steele sees if the country she loves — prior to her transition, Steele loved taking solo cross-country trips and wonders if she can travel the country with the same sense of freedom — will love her back.

Here are nine things about the making of “Will & Harper” that might surprise you, taken from Greenbaum’s Toolkit appearance.

Harper Was Initially Against a Documentary

As the documentary’s opening shows,...

UK-Ireland box office preview: Warner Bros’ ‘Blue Beetle’ chased by Universal’s ‘Strays’
Image
Curzon is re-releasing Lars von Trier’s ‘The Idiots’.

Warner Bros’ superhero sci-fi Blue Beetle and Universal’s canine comedy Strays head the new titles at the UK-Ireland box office, in a post-Barbenheimer test of how the market can handle two wide studio releases.

Opening in 556 cinemas, Blue Beetle is the third feature from Puerto Rican filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto. In the film, after an alien scarab chooses a teenager to be its symbiotic host, the youngster becomes the eponymous superhero with an unpredictable suit of armour.

Xolo Mariduena leads the cast, which also includes Bruna Marquezine, Damian Alcazar, George Lopez and Adriana Barraza.

Austin Powers 4 Is a Movie That Strays Director Josh Greenbaum Would Love to Make
Image
Director Josh Greenbaum expresses his enthusiasm for helming a fourth Austin Powers movie and credits the franchise as a source of inspiration for his own films. The idea of Austin Powers 4 has been circulating since 2005, and Mike Myers has hinted at the possibility of the sequel happening. While fans await the return of Austin Powers, they can enjoy Greenbaum's comedy film Strays, which tells the story of a gullible dog seeking revenge.

Director Josh Greenbaum would love to helm a fourth Austin Powers movie. The filmmaker behind this year’s dog-loving comedy, Strays, helmed the documentary Becoming Bond back in 2017, but while Greenbaum does not strike anyone as a possible 007 director, he leapt at the idea of helming the comical espionage of Austin Powers. While speaking with Comicbook.com, the director said...

"I would love that. Would absolutely love that. I'm close friends with Dana Carvey after making the...

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Picturestart Set Live-Action Comedy ‘Strays’ at Universal (Exclusive)
Image
Universal Pictures has preemptively nabbed a live action project from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, to be produced with Erik Feig’s Picturestart.

Titled “Strays,” the film is an adult comedy and original pitch from writer Dan Perrault (“American Vandal”), about an abandoned dog who teams up with other strays to get revenge on his former owner.

The project will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, who just made his narrative directorial debut with Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo’s “Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” Greenbaum is an Emmy winner who hails from the unscripted space.

Picturestart packaged and developed Perrault’s script for Greenbaum, Lord and Miller and their label’s film president Aditya Sood, and producer Louis Leterrier who will join via his Rabbit Hole Productions banner. Feig will produce for Picturestart.

The movie falls under Lord and Miller’s first-look deal with the Donna Langley-led Universal,...

Kristen Wiig at an event for Party de saucisses : Nourritopie (2024)
‘Barb & Star’ Film Review: Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo Go to Cloud Cuckoo Land
Kristen Wiig at an event for Party de saucisses : Nourritopie (2024)
Barb and Star do indeed go to Vista Del Mar in “Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” but viewers are advised to put their maps away and let the movie follow its own deranged path. A goofy and absurdist comedy in which anything can happen, and it usually will, Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo’s long-awaited follow-up to the 2011 hit “Bridesmaids” absolutely plays by its own rules.

Whether or not that’s a successful strategy will very much depend on the viewer’s state of mind and opinions about comedy, but in an era where so many films seem to emerge from the same bland assembly line, there’s something exciting about a movie that plays to sharply divided reactions, even if that movie doesn’t hit 100% of the time. Not all the jokes landed for me, admittedly, but they all come from such a bizarre place that I...

The Top 10 Best Steve Carell Movies Ranked
Image
Steve Carell's new Netflix series Space Force launched early Friday morning, and if nothing else, it encouraged me to revisit the actor's career. I think it's fair to say that Carell will ultimately be remembered for his iconic turn as Michael Scott on The Office, but he has delivered some great performances on the big screen as well. I was first introduced to Carell via the short-lived 1996 sketch show The Dana Carvey Show (check out the documentary Too Funny to Fail on Hulu)- which led to a correspondent gig on The Daily Show with Jon …...
