In the pouring rain, upwards of 100 people marched outside of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Park Avenue South building Tuesday afternoon in New York as part of a themed Writers Guild picket that doubled as a promise to unionize east coast animation writers.

“This has been a long, horrible battle trying to get animation writing covered. We are not giving up. I’m really just here to say that when the strike is over, when we have won the contract we deserve, we are circling back to animation,” Susan Kim, WGA East animation caucus co-chair and a writer/story editor behind hits like Arthur, Bubble Guppies, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Clifford the Big Red Dog, told a drenched crowd of picketers. “We are going to be back. New York – The Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) announced today the 2013 nominees (order determined by lot) for its Council election. The term is for two years from 2013-2015. There are nine (9) open Council seats (six Freelance seats and three Staff seats) in this election. The twelve (12) candidates for the six (6) open Freelance seats are: Zhubin Parang, Bonnie Datt (i), David Atkins, Henry Bean (i), Bernardo Ruiz (i), Susan Kim (i), Robert Levi, Michael Lannan, Amy Sohn, Courtney Simon (i), Norman Steinberg and George Strayton. The Writers Guild East has announced the results of its 2011 elections, notable not so much for the lack of competition (the main incumbents ran unopposed) but for being the first to institute online voting, which the guild said resulted in higher participation and no invalidated ballots. Wgae president Michael Winship ran unopposed and was re-elected; Jeremy Pikser was elected VP and replaces Bob Schneider, who was elected Secretary Treasurer succeeding Gail Lee. Henry Bean, Bonnie Datt, Elliot Kalan, Susan Kim, Bernardo Ruiz, and Courtney Simon were voted in as freelance members to the Wgae Council, while Sue Brown McCann, Phil Pilato, and Duane Tollison were elected to staff seats. I recently went to a book release party at the NYC Museum of Comics and Art at the behest of a friend who was unable to attend. I knew nothing of the graphic novel that was being showcased, City of Spies (First Second Books). Nor had I heard of the creative team, Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan, the authors, and Pascal Dizin, the artist. Kim and Klavan originally developed the story as a screenplay, intending to mix live action with short segments of comic books art. After becoming convinced that graphic novel would make a worthy medium for delivering their tale, the authors enlisted the artistic talent of Dizin. A newcomer to graphic novel art, Dizin was well-versed in the style of the period, drawing influence from the movies of the 1940s and Hergé’s The Adventures of Tintin. Michael Winship has been re-elected to a second term as president of the WGA East.

Bob Schneider was re-elected to a second term as vp, and Gail Lee was re-elected to her seventh term as secretary-treasurer. Winship and Lee ran unopposed.

The officers' terms run through September 2011.

"Once again, I am honored to have been chosen by the members of the Writers Guild East to serve as their president," Winship said in a statement. "Many of the issues and problems we have addressed over the past two years continue, but within them are opportunities to continue growing our union and to further the interests of Guild East members and writers everywhere."

There were 427 valid ballots cast. New vp Schneider received 230 votes (53.9%), while opposing candidate Tom Phillips received 118 votes (27.6%) and Ambrose J. Raftery received 39 votes (9.1%).

The WGA East announced Monday the candidates for its fall election, which will include a presidential race between Richard Wesley and Chris Albers. Tom Fontana is running unopposed for vp, and Gail Lee is running unopposed for secretary-treasurer. In addition, 15 people have been nominated to run for six open freelance seats on the council, the governing body. They include incumbents Stephen Schiff, Donald Westlake, Penelope Koechl, Jerome Coppersmith and Suzanne O'Malley as well as challengers Cynthia Benjamin, Wesley, Susan Rice, Karen Goodman, James Hart, Warren Leight, Richard Vetere, Susan Kim, Maria Maggenti and Adam Brooks.
