Samantha Bee Vows to Keep ‘Full Frontal’ Viewers Laughing on Road to 2020 Election
Samantha Bee
Many late-night hosts have regular segments they can turn to again and again to get laughs. Seth Meyers has “A Closer Look.” Jimmy Kimmel has “Mean Tweets.” Jimmy Fallon has his “Thank You Notes.” And James Corden has “Carpool Karaoke.”

On “Full Frontal,” one of TBS’ late-night entries, host Samantha Bee has none of those things. With a program that airs once a week, she doesn’t have the luxury of relying on regular concepts. “We expect to change things up for our personal interests,” says Bee in a recent interview. “I like to reinvent things as much as possible.”

Over the course of four seasons (the show’s fifth cycle just got underway), Bee has changed the set, the opening, and in recent weeks, some of her regular contributors and head writers. Earlier this month, “Full Frontal” elevated Mike Drucker and Kristen Bartlett to head writer titles, replacing Melinda Taub.

WGA Awards: ‘Parasite’, ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Take Top Film Honors; HBO Sweeps Key TV Nods With ‘Succession’, ‘Barry’ & ‘Watchmen’ – The Complete List Of Winners
Image
The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.

This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Many of the film-side nominees gathered in the Edison Ballroom in NYC, so as to make the shorter jump to the BAFTAs which are Sunday in London.

Last year, the guild did not line up with Oscar’s screenwriting prizes, awarding Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade in original screenplay and Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? in adapted. Green...

Samantha Bee
Samantha Bee (‘Full Frontal’) on her hopes for the 2020 election cycle [Complete Interview Transcript]
Samantha Bee
Samantha Bee is once again nominated at the Emmys for her variety talk series, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.” She now has 12 nominations in total, with one victory for her “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner” special in 2017.

Bee recently spoke with Gold Derby senior editor Daniel Montgomery to discuss the turbulent news cycle, her episode on Yemeni refugees and her plans for a new tech project. Watch the exclusive video interview above and read the complete transcript below.

Samantha Bee on Why Her Writers’ Office is the ‘Physical Expression’ of ‘Doing It All’
Samantha Bee
On any given day, Samantha Bee is juggling a lot between her TBS late-night series, “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee,” and her family. This often includes getting work done in the car on the way to picking up or dropping off her three young children. It also results in her Manhattan office being a bit “frenetic.” Although she considers it a “pretty” space, she doesn’t have the time to keep it neat and tidy. “Usually it’s a godforsaken mess with piles of stuff and shoes I haven’t put away and clothes laying over chairs,” she says. “You have to do it all, so my office is the physical expression of that.”

Not-so-ready To Wear

If there is a focal point in Bee’s office, she considers it to be the red blazer she wore during her first episode, back in 2016, that is now framed and hung behind her desk.

How Late-Night Talk Shows Avoid Political Burnout
It may feel like late-night talk shows often overwhelmingly consist of a barrage of recounts of the most recent, or most polarizing, political headlines or tweets. It’s a subject matter that can’t, and perhaps shouldn’t, be avoided, given the changing state of local laws when it comes to health care, that families are literally being ripped apart at the border, Ice raids, unemployment rates, climate-change deniers, new tariffs, and so much more. It may be a scramble for such late-night shows to keep up at all, let alone consistently come up with clever commentary to offer around the hard truths. So perhaps it comes as no surprise that some such programs are talking less about politics while others are forced to find new coping mechanisms to avoid political burnout.

“One of the great joys of ‘The Daily Show’ is that we’ve learned how to expand the...

Melinda Taub at an event for The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards (2019)
Confessions of a Late-Night Writer: No, I Don’t Love Making Donald Trump Jokes
Melinda Taub at an event for The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards (2019)
Melinda Taub, a writer for “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee,” wrote this piece for the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine. On election night, after the results came in and the world realized that Donald Trump was really, truly going to be the president, I got a lot of wonderful messages from friends. “Can’t wait for ‘Full Frontal’ tomorrow,'” they said. “We really need you guys.” A lovely sentiment, but it was 3 in the morning, I couldn’t stop crying and the show wasn’t written yet. I was working as hard on getting my sister to come to.

Samantha Bee in Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (2016)
Exclusive: How Samantha Bee Took ‘Full Frontal’ to Iraq and Discovered Her First Pro-Trump Story
Samantha Bee in Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (2016)
Fresh off an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, Full Frontal With Samantha Bee -- the first female-led series to be recognized in the category -- is taking audiences behind the frontlines of the Iraq war against Isis in Kurdistan.

Although Bee has taken the show on the road during the 2016 presidential campaign, filmed an alternative White House Correspondents’ Dinner in D.C. and reported from the Syrian border, it’s the first time the host has gone to Iraq -- a trip she completed in just four days during Ramadan in June.

On Wednesday, the TBS show will run the first of two episodes dedicated to their field coverage produced by Razan Ghalayini, a documentary filmmaker-turned-field producer on the show who is also responsible for Full Frontal’s visit to a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan during the first season.

“In watching the news, you realize that all the Isis coverage is on the frontline...

Still Star-Crossed TV Review – Ya Shakespeare Meets Shonda Rhimes
Still Star-Crossed, the novel by Melinda Taub, is an interesting and clever look at the world Shakespeare didn’t actually lay out all that distinctly in Romeo & Juliet. It’s equal parts fan fiction and development cheat by appropriation, but it spins a decent yarn and delivers an updated sense of drama. It’s not only solid Ya entertainment, but it’s just the sort of effort we could use more of, both as an enticement to read more and backward entry into other literature.

Still Star-Crossed, the show, dresses up the idea wonderfully but renders it all rather lifeless by trying to out-drama itself at every turn in a decidedly Shondaland morass of overworked histrionics. Oddly, this manages, at points, to come full circle and become interesting again by offering up near-cornball drama in situations that actually require all the drama you would think you could muster.

The show...

Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting in Romeo and Juliet (1968)
Exclusive: 'Still Star-Crossed' Actress Previews Shonda Rhimes' New Romeo and Juliet Drama
Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting in Romeo and Juliet (1968)
We all know the story of Romeo and Juliet's fleeting romance and tragic deaths, but what happens next has always been a mystery -- until now.

Inspired by the novel by Melinda Taub, ABC's new summer series, Still Star-Crossed, ramps up the action and drama after Romeo and Juliet die, and the treacherous feud between the Montague and Capulet families that continues to rage on. But another forbidden romance presents itself at the end of the premiere episode and that will certainly ruffle 17th century feathers as the season progresses.

"It's the ultimate romantic story about forbidden love and I think a lot of people can relate to that," actress Medalion Rahimi, who plays Princess Isabella, tells Et of the time-honored Romeo and Juliet tale. "The tragedy in the end -- I don't want to say that it's good to necessarily glorify young lovers' suicide -- but the idea that because of prejudice these young lovers...

Romeo and Juliet was just the beginning. Literally. Still Star-Crossed debuts in just a few days, picking up right where the classic Shakespearean tale leaves off, after teenage lovers Romeo and Juliet have died. However, the series, based on the book by Melinda Taub and from executive producer Shonda Rhimes, takes that ending in a bit of a new direction filled with "love, passion, deceit, and hate, and family, and war," according to star Lyshana Lynch. "At the end of the original story, the death of Romeo and Juliet healed both of the households," star Zuleikha Robinson says in the exclusive featurette above. "However, in our story, the rifts get bigger."  In the pilot,...
