The South Korean box office experienced a seismic shift this weekend as “Mickey 17” claimed the top spot with a commanding $6.6 million debut, capturing 69.06% of the market share.

The sci-fi film, directed by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson, not only outpaced all competitors but also set a new high for 2025, surpassing the opening of “Captain America: Brave New World.” According to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the weekend of Feb. 28-March 2 saw the top 10 films earn a total of $9 million, a significant boost from the previous weekend’s $4.4 million.

“Mickey 17,” which follows a ‘reprinted’ worker (Pattinson) on a distant planet colony tasked with dangerous jobs that no one else will do, attracted 980,549 admissions over the weekend across 2,153 screens. Warner Bros. reported a four-day opening total of KRW12.9 billion ($9 million), benefiting from a non-traditional Friday release and the Monday Independence Day Movement holiday.

The London Korean Film Festival (Lkff) wrapped its 19th edition on Wednesday with a screening of E.oni’s bold coming-of-age drama Love in the Big City, which stars Kim Go-eun (Exhuma) and Noh Sang-hyun (Pachinko).

Run by the Korean Cultural Centre UK (Kccuk), this year’s festival drew over 3,300 attendees and also marked a historic collaboration with the British Film Institute (BFI), with several screenings taking place at the BFI’s Southbank Theatre.

The Kccuk will also host a special preview and UK premiere of Squid Game Season 2 on December 16 at the BFI’s theater, ahead of the series’ worldwide premiere on December 26 on Netflix.

The BFI is also running a series until December 31 in collaboration with the Kccuk and Korean Film Archives called “Echoes in Time,” featuring 30 Korean films produced during the Golden Age of the 1960s and the New Korean Cinema era.

The 2024 edition of Filmfest Hamburg was the biggest in the German festival’s 32-year history, posting approximately 59,000 admissions to screenings, up from last year’s record-breaking total of 52,700.

This included the preceding open-air Binnenalster Filmfest, which ran from September 19-22.

The 10 days of the festival closed with the gala screening of Pedro Almodovar’s The Room Next Door on October 5.

“So many of my dreams for this first year have come true. It feels truly magical,” said festival director Malika Rabahallah. “It was overwhelming to see so many renowned directors, actors, and filmmakers in Hamburg, all enjoying the special festival atmosphere with us.

Korean rom-com No Gain No Love will launch globally on Prime Video globally on August 26.

Episodes will be released weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays, starting from late August. In Korea, the show is rolling out on tvN and local streaming service Tving.

The drama, Starring Shin Mina and Kim Young-dae, follows Hae-yeong who seeks out a fake wedding with her neighbourhood convenience store employee, Kim Ji-uk to avoid missing out on a promotion.

Kim Ji-uk is known for being a model neighbourhood citizen and works night shifts at a convenience store. He agrees to Hae-yeong’s proposal to be her fake groom for her fake wedding.

No Gain No Love marks Shin Mina’s return to dramas after two years. Her last drama was the breakout hit Our Blues, and she has appeared in other popular rom-coms such as Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Oh My Venus and My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.
