Richard Bacon’s “Silence is Golden” presents a fascinating inversion of the traditional television audience dynamic. Where most shows depend on audience participation to generate energy, this U&Dave production deliberately weaponizes restraint. Hosted by Dermot O’Leary, the format places 70 studio audience members in an impossible bind: they begin with £250,000 to share equally, but every involuntary laugh, gasp, or utterance costs them £5,000 to £10,000 depending on volume.

The show’s architecture is deceptively simple. Regular panelists Katherine Ryan, Seann Walsh, and Fatiha El-Ghorri oversee a parade of comedians and variety acts whose sole purpose is to crack the audience’s resolve. Each participant wears individual microphones while cameras monitor their every micro-expression. The format transforms the studio into a pressure cooker where natural human responses become financial penalties.

What emerges is less a traditional comedy showcase than a behavioral experiment disguised as entertainment. The audience becomes both protagonist and antagonist, their collective self-control the primary narrative engine.

In the early '90s, "The Lord of the Rings" was just that weird cartoon from Ralph Bakshi, the most famous Kate was "heroin chic" supermodel Kate Moss, and Kiwi director Peter Jackson was only really on the radar of gorehounds thanks to his splattery, low-budget horror comedies like "Bad Taste" and "Braindead." That all began to change with the arrival of "Heavenly Creatures" in 1994, a fantastical period drama about a sensational but mostly forgotten true-life crime.

Distributed internationally under the Miramax banner (with "In a World" voiceover master Don Lafontaine doing his thing on the trailer), "Heavenly Creatures" was the first Jackson film you might actually take your mum to watch at the cinema. It also introduced the world to two young unknown actresses, Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey, playing a pair of schoolgirls whose retreat into an imaginary world leads to obsession, insanity, and murder.

In a historic indigenous-coordinated initiative, the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre has entered into a collaboration with Colossal Biosciences, a Texas-based genetic engineering and de-extinction company, and acclaimed The Lord of the Rings director Sir Peter Jackson, to work together to resurrect the extinct South Island Giant Moa.

This comes after Colossal successfully brought back the dire wolf, and we recently had the opportunity to sit down with Jackson, Ben Lamm, Colossal CEO and co-founder, and Kyle Davis, a Ngāi Tahu archaeologist.

To bring you up to speed, the moa were flightless birds endemic to New Zealand that went extinct approximately 600 years ago, approximately two centuries after Polynesian settlement. These remarkable birds, which consisted of nine distinct species, ranged from turkey-sized species to the South Island Giant Moa (Dinornis robustus), which stood up to 3.6 meters tall.

As large herbivores, moa played crucial ecological roles in New Zealand's forests and grasslands for millions of years.

Netflix's upcoming series Vladimir has built out more of its growing cast. The Netflix romantic thriller is based on the hit debut novel by Julia May Jonas which was published in 2022. Jonas is adapting her book for the streamer and will also serve as an executive producer. Rachel Weisz and Leo Woodall were previously announced to star in the series.

Now, Varietyhas revealed that nine new actors have been cast in Vladimir. Series regulars include John Slattery (Mad Men) as John, Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) as Cynthia, and Ellen Robertson (Mickey 17) as Sid.

Recurring guest roles have been cast with Kayli Carter (Private Life) as Lila, Miriam Silverman (Your Friends and Neighbors) as Florence, Mallori Johnson (Is God Is) as Edwina, Matt Walsh (Veep) as David, Tattiawna Jones (Murderbot) as Alexis, and Louise Lambert (Ginny & Georgia) as Dawn.

Colossal Biosciences — which announced in April that it had brought dire wolves back from extinction (only to be met with a howl of critics who called the claims overstated) — is teaming up with filmmaker Peter Jackson on a new animal revival project.

The company announced Tuesday that it is working with Jackson and New Zealand’s Ngāi Tahu Research Centre to bring back the moa, native flightless birds that went extinct around 600 years ago. Found nowhere else on Earth, moas comprised nine species — with the largest, the South Island Giant Moa, clocking in at around 400 pounds with a height of up to 12 feet when its neck was outstretched. That made it likely the tallest ever bird ever to have existed.

After the Golden Globe nominee died Wednesday following a private battle with cancer, several of his peers paid tribute on social media, including co-stars from Charmed, Nip/Tuck and Fantastic Four (2005), as well as his ex-wife Brooke Burns, who posted a photo of him with their daughter Maddy.

Nicolas Cage, who recently starred alongside McMahon in the Cannes midnight title The Surfer, said in a statement to Deadline, “Such deeply saddening news. I spent six weeks working with Julian, and he was the most talented of actors. Our scenes together on The Surfer were amongst my favorites I have ever participated in, and Julian is one of my favorite people. He was a kind and intelligent man. My love to his family.”

The pair are set to star in director Peter Facinelli’s forthcoming film Grace Period. Hailing from Wango Films, the movie will be introduced to buyers at Cannes this month ahead of a planned production start in August.

Grace Period centers on Willa (Greene), who impulsively decides to freeze her eggs with the help of Dr. Rubin, played by Emmy-nominated actor Matt Walsh. Things get complicated when she soon meets her ideal guy, Greg (Green), and ends up navigating this journey with the help of both men.

The indie film reunites Facinelli with Greene, his former co-star in the Twilight franchise, and Green, who starred with him in the 1998 teen rom-com Can’t Hardly Wait. Facinelli helms the feature from a script by his real-life partner, Lily Anne Harrison.

Cineflix Rights is handling international sales and the deal with Stan marks the first big pre-sale for the series. The Walsh Sisters was commissioned by Irish pubcaster RTÉ in association with the BBC. Given the number of books that Keyes’ novels about the siblings and their family have shifted, the series is eagerly awaited.

The timing of the Stan deal is fortuitous with Keyes currently in Australia on a book tour. “Australian readers have always been huge supporters of my novels, in particular those about the Walsh Sisters and there’s such a treat in store for you,” she said.
