Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is one of the best-ranked shows on Apple TV+ right now. It is set across two time periods- the 1950s and 2015- and its dual timelines are a good way of exploring Monarch’s origins and the world of 2015 after G-Day (one year after Godzilla emerged in San Francisco). So, it threads together the events that happened from Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla (2014), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). As such, it’s both a sequel and a prequel.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters isn’t just a spin-off; it is a strong connective tissue that keeps the MonsterVerse together. Since the show spans decades so it reveals how Monarch came into being and how early meetings with the Titans shaped the organization. Moreover, the show also explores how its secrets affect the present timeline. The show lends more to the lore of the organization and the Titans through time dilation,...

Production company Lyrical Media is launching Lyrical Games a new, privately funded game publisher with its first three titles in production.
Blake Rochkind, former Head of Business Development at Take-Two’s Private Division, will oversee Lyrical Games, which says it aims to support imaginative and high-caliber games that live between the extremes of smaller indies and large productions. Rochkind was previously a Video Game Agent at United Talent Agency.
He is joined by Roger Kurtz, former Head of Production at Private Division and a team of games publishing veterans from Devolver Digital, Humble Games, Microsoft and more.
The company called the new venture “a continuation of Lyrical Media’s mission to empower storytellers and build expansive new worlds through partnerships with promising creative talents. Michael B. Jordan has a new co-star. Less than a week after Taylor Russell exited Amazon MGM Studios' The Thomas Crown Affair remake, her replacement has been found.
According to Variety, Adria Arjona has joined The Thomas Crown Affair, stepping into the co-lead role of the insurance investigator who pursues Jordan's titular billionaire art thief. Russell had been cast in the role since March 2025, but departed late last week over "creative differences." With production having already commenced, Amazon and the movie's producers, which count Jordan and Charles Roven, worked quickly to cast her replacement, with Arjona emerging victorious. She now joins an ensemble that includes Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk, and Aiysha Hart.
Where Have You Seen Adria Arjona Before?
The Thomas Crown Affair marks the latest high-profile role for Arjona, who broke out playing mechanic/black market dealer Bix Caleen in the Disney+ Star Wars series Andor.

Adria Arjona is set to star in Amazon MGM Studios’ Michael B. Jordan-directed reimagining of “The Thomas Crown Affair” following Taylor Russell’s exit from the project.
She joins previously announced stars Jordan, Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk and Aiysha Hart in the film, which is currently in production in London.

Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon, production on The Thomas Crown Affair keeps spinning, and it already has its new female lead. Andor's Adria Arjona has joined the heist thriller remake alongside Michael B. Jordan. She comes in to replace Taylor Russell, who departed the production over creative issues. The Amazon MGM Studios remake is set to break into theaters on March 5, 2027.
Variety reports that as soon as Russell left the project, an immediate search began for a new lead, and found one in Arjona. It’s possible, at this stage in its run, that Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth won’t pass the coveted $1 billion mark after all. Each of its three predecessors did, and the studio gave the movie a prime summer release date, anticipating similar box office fireworks. And even though Rebirth has delivered a phenomenal performance so far, it’s facing tough competition from the likes of Superman and F1, and will soon have to deal with The Fantastic Four: First Steps as well. Plus, Universal will debut it on PVOD platforms sooner than expected, in early August. Whether it hits the $1 billion mark is unclear, but the fact that it has stomped past several other blockbusters can't be overlooked.

You could almost imagine a spec script for one of the new MonsterVerse movies being refashioned into a Jurassic World adventure. Had the two properties been owned by the same studio, they'd have already been mashed-up for a mega-budget spectacular. But a clash of the titans took place at the box office regardless, with Jurassic World Rebirth overtaking Peter Jackson's first film after the grand success of his seminal Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jackson's series ended with his The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, sweeping every category it was nominated in at the Oscars, and grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide. And, unlike other filmmakers who've scaled down after spending so much time on elaborate productions, Jackson utilized his blank check by making a passion project: King Kong.

Although there has been growing enthusiasm for rising horror auteurs like Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers, Mike Flanagan, and Coralie Fargeat, no filmmaker has elicited quite as extreme of response as Ari Aster. While Aster’s talent was evident from some of his early, disturbing short films, his work within features has raised the threshold for upsetting content. There’s certainly an art to being transgressive for the sake of attention, but Aster has woven in delicate stories about human fragility and developed consistent working relationships with some of the industry’s finest actors. It’s far too early to judge whether Aster is the heir apparent to filmmakers like Tobe Hooper or Wes Craven, but he has earned enough name recognition that any of his upcoming projects has become an event worthy of anticipation.

Nicolas Cage Almost Skipped Face/Off—Until John Woo’s Bold Pitch Made It an Action Classic (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Nicolas Cage didn’t exactly leap at Face/Off when it first crossed his table. In fact, he politely declined. However, leave it to director John Woo to flip the script. Woo cleverly pitched the film to Cage as a cerebral mind-bender, not the bullet-fueled, identity-swapping spectacle it truly was. And the result was that Cage signed on, and the rest is history. The 1997 cult hit went on to score 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, pulled in box office glory, and landed Cage and John Travolta in what many fans still call their best roles. But that road to casting was nothing sort of a wild ride!
This is How Nicolas Cage Tricked Into Iconic Role in Face/Off
Before it became a late-’90s action masterpiece, Face/Off was pitched with a totally different lineup in mind.

The era of live-action adaptations has recently found new respect from fans, and the credit for this goes to Netflix’s One Piece live-action adaptation. The series portrayed the eccentric story of Monkey D. Luffy, who plans on becoming the King of Pirates, with his crew, as dangers and struggles often greet him on his journey through the seas.
One of the reasons that the live-action adaptation of One Piece was such a tremendous success was due to the actors who performed the roles of various characters from the series. Among them, Steven John Ward, the South African actor who plays Dracule Mihawk, was a special one because fans loved him in this role.
However, what many fans might not know is that Ward also wanted to be a part of another live-action adaptation by Netflix. This live-action is none other than the Death Note movie by the streaming platform,...

One of the most underrated horror sequels of the last decade finds its way onto free streaming this July. Adam Wingard's Blair Witch, the 2016 follow-up to the 1999 found footage phenomenon The Blair Witch Project, is set to be in Tubi's extensive library starting July 1. The film is also presented in found footage format, as a pseudo-documentary showing the ill-fated journey of a doomed group of friends.
In Blair Witch, James Donahue invites his friends on a camping trip in the Black Hills Forest, where he's sure he will find some answers about his sister's disappearance. Heather Donahue was reported missing years ago after she set out to make a documentary about a local urban legend. Her brother found a YouTube video that has an image of what appears to be his sister. Or so he believes. He convinces his friends to join him, and among them there's a filmmaker who will document the events.

The obsession with re-imagining anime/manga as American live-action adaptations has proven to be problematic. While there isn't anything inherently wrong with reframing these stories as live-action projects, most English-language adaptations tend to completely change the localized context or misunderstand the source material. Perhaps the most egregious example of this is Adam Wingard's "Death Note" adaptation for Netflix, which takes the premise of a beloved gateway anime and warps it beyond recognition. In Tsugumi Ohba's "Death Note" manga, everything that happens is rooted in hyper-specific Japanese legends and mythology, where words like "shinigami" (Japanese spirits of death) and "Kira" (a transliteration of the word "killer") are integral to the premise. Once this cultural context is removed, "Death Note" falls apart, as we are only left with disconnected concepts that can never form a coherent whole.
This is also the case with "Bet," Netflix's Americanized series adaptation of Homura Kawamoto's "Kakegurui,...

Dakota Johnson (Materialists) and Adria Arjona (Andor) star as a pair of women whose husbands make utter fools of themselves in the film, which mines comedy from the concept of an open marriage. Splitsville made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and will premiere in theaters on August 22. As the trailer opens, Ashley (Arjona) asks Carey for a divorce. To say he doesn't take it well would be an understatement: he gets out of the car and runs away, eventually ending up at the luxurious home of their friends Paul (Covino) and Julie (Johnson).

Adria Arjona is still on a high from the positive response to the premiere of her latest project, Splitsville, at the Cannes Film Festival. “I think people sometimes forget that actors don’t really get that unless you’re in the theater, unless you’re performing [live],” she tells THR. “When you get that applause, you’re like, ‘Ok, I’m in the right zone.’ ”
Arjona’s zone is a bit left of center, which made co-starring alongside Michael Angelo Covino — who also co-wrote, directed and produced the movie about two couples who drift apart — fun. “I’m a quirky girl,” she insists. “I just look a certain way and people don’t think I am, but I’m weird.”

Superman is arguably one of the most anticipated movies of 2025. According to director James Gunn, the story will resemble one of the King of the Monsters' most successful films in years.
Speaking to Japanese outlet Cinema Today, Gunn talked about finding an intimate side to Superman's story amid all the fantastical elements, citing 2023's Godzilla Minus One as a great example. "My goal is to make a film like Godzilla Minus One, which depicted Godzilla but also had great human drama," he said in a translation via GamesRadar+. He also noted that, despite Superman's alien nature, the film, "at its core is a human story. The relationship between Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and (villain) Lex Luthor is the core of the work."
Released in celebration of the Japanese movie icon's 70th anniversary, Godzilla Minus One received universal acclaim overseas, eventually smashing the American box office record for highest-grossing non-English movie.

Face/Off, starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, is among the coolest action movies of the 90s. The unconventional plot, John Woo’s direction, and performances have made the 1997 movie a cult classic. Though the makers were initially skeptical of the bizarre plot of the movie, Face/Off became a blockbuster.
Recently, a BTS footage from Face/Off went viral that showed the filming of a fight scene between Travolta and Cage. In the clip, we can see Travolta being choked by Nicolas Cage, who seems to be too much into his character.

The story of Face/Off was undoubtedly too crazy on pen and paper. A plot featuring a dedicated FBI agent, Sean Archer (John Travolta), swapping faces with an international terrorist, Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage), sounds quite difficult to pay off on-screen.

Update: It’s official. Alex Garland will write and direct a live-action Elden Ring movie for A24 and video-game company Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. I can’t say this is the project I expected Garland to tackle, but I’m excited to see how it turns out.
— Original article follows —
A24 is best known for releasing films like The Witch, The Florida Project, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Lady Bird, The Disaster Artist, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, Uncut Gems, Best Picture winners Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All at Once, etc. They’ve largely been considered to be an arthouse company – but we’ve known for a while now that they’re trying to shift their strategy from arthouse films to more commercial films, including action and big IP projects. This strategy includes the recently released war movie Warfare, Adam Wingard’s gonzo horror action movie Onslaught, the UFC movie The Smashing Machine,...

Nicolas Cage is a one-of-a-kind actor, but that doesn't mean he's not often confused with another celebrity. Cage has named the person he seems to get confused with the most, though it comes down to having similar names more than a physical resemblance.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Cage was asked about Aussie musician Nick Cave. Cage shared that he's confused with Cave often, though it's not the only musician people mistake him for. With that said, Cage remembers when he once met Cave at an animal sanctuary. It wasn't lost on the two how similar their names were, and Cage recalled mentioning that to Cave in person.
"I don’t think there’s a day that goes by where I’m not mistaken for Nick Cave. People also say: 'Hey, Nick, you were great in The Hunger,' which is this great David Bowie movie [in which Cage doesn’t feature]," Cage said.

The MonsterVerse has become one of the most reliable, slow and steady cinematic universes going in Hollywood. Tracing its roots back to Gareth Edwards' gritty, grounded, divisive hit "Godzilla" in 2014, the franchise has since expanded to five increasingly wild movies, a TV show in the form of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," comics books, and even video games. Now, Warner Bros. and Legendary are reuniting once again for another kaiju-filled cinematic romp coming our way in 2027.
While virtually nothing has been revealed yet in terms of plot details, the studio has confirmed that "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova" has an official release date. The MonsterVerse just got a whole lot hotter. Legendary Pictures has officially revealed the title for its next kaiju showdown, and it’s going nuclear — the sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is now titled Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. While plot details are still sealed tighter than Hollow Earth, the title itself is already sparking theories. Supernova? Are we going cosmic this time? Is an intergalactic Titan on the way? And more importantly: will Godzilla and Kong need space suits? If they don't, we're out.

Live-action adaptations have always been a disappointment for anime fans who only hope to see their favorite anime adapted in real life. Among these cursed anime live-action adaptations, the one that felt the most disappointing was Death Note, which came out on Netflix in 2017.
The live-action movie was one of the most anticipated projects for Death Note fans, but these anticipations turned into regret because of the way the movie desecrated the entire story of the original Death Note. The movie tried to westernize the concept of Death Note and thus failed miserably.
Its failure was so big that actor Steven John Ward, who plays Dracule Mihawk in the One Piece live-action, was happy when he lost his role in the movie during the auditions. He once talked about how he auditioned for a role in the Death Note movie, but got rejected. However, he was actually happy when he...

Everyone knows about Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular manga series Death Note, but no one wants to watch it (for obvious reasons). Fans frown upon the adaptation for ruining an iconic story by twisting the plot and changing the characters without proper justification.
The only good thing to come out of it is perhaps Willem Dafoe’s role as Ryuk, the Shinigami who gives the Death Note to Light. Fans were impressed, deeming his voice perfect for the death god. But did you know that despite doing such a good job at voicing Ryuk, Dafoe had never watched the anime before taking up the job?

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Locarno Film Festival. “Invention” plays at the Metrograph in New York starting Friday, April 18.
When it comes to meta experiments that blur those good ole lines between fiction and the filmmakers’ own non-fiction life stories, there’s a risk that the resulting feature can border on being impenetrable if audiences aren’t fed a load of exposition in advance. That’s far less of an issue for classically-told narratives from mega-famous artists delving into (semi)autobiography (like Steven Spielberg with “The Fabelmans”), but definitely so for smaller scale projects from independent filmmakers whose output is more peculiar. What can be a compelling behind-the-scenes story as described in a press kit may not necessarily translate into the finished feature as something engaging, or even coherent, to anyone coming to the work without the luxury of reading production notes before the screening.

What can be a compelling behind-the-scenes story as described in a press kit may not necessarily translate into the finished feature as something engaging, or even coherent, to anyone coming to the work without the luxury of reading production notes before the screening.

Multiple sources are reporting that Sam Neill (Jurassic Park; Thor: Ragnarok; Peaky Blinders) has joined the cast of Legendary's next MonsterVerse installment, the tentatively titled Godzilla x Kong 3.
Plot details are being kept strictly under wraps for now, but the studio has teased that the new film, which is being helmed by Grant Sputore, will follow “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”
It's up for debate what that cataclysmic world-ending threat could be, but the previous film's director Adam Wingard teased last year that, if he were to direct the next film, Destoroyah might be in the cards. Speaking with Discussing Film, he said,
"I’ll say this, one of my top Godzilla movies is Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. The reason it’s one of my favorite films is I don’t think any other Godzilla movie,...
