Predator: Badlands and Tron: Ares Previewed at Comic-Con
Image
Cast members and filmmakers from Predator: Badlands and Tron: Ares attended the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday for two special panels hosted by The Walt Disney Studios and moderated by Kevin Smith in Hall H.

The first panel featured the stars of 20th Century Studios’ Predator: Badlands, Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, and the film’s director/producer, Dan Trachtenberg, who were greeted by the more than 6,500 Comic-Con attendees wearing Predator masks. A 7-foot-tall real-life Predator descended upon Hall H and used its heat signature abilities to scope the room, zeroing in on Smith.

A brief Q&a followed, which focused on details of the upcoming action-adventure film and included legendary creature designer Alec Gillis, touching briefly on the recent animated film Predator: Killer of Killers. Trachtenberg delighted fans with an exclusive look at the alternate ending of the film, featuring franchise favorites Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover.

Disney was in full on show, don’t tell mode for Predator: Badlands, unveiling the intense first 15 minutes of the upcoming sci-fi adventure movie for a primed Comic-Con crowd.

The panel showed a cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover that is being inserted into the animated Predator movie beginning today, and it wrapped up the panel by giving away Predator masks for every person, all 6,500 of them, in the cavernous Hall H.

‘Predator: Badlands’ Thrills Comic-Con With First 15 Minutes and Alternate ‘Killer of Killers’ Ending With Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover
Image
“Predator: Badlands” director Dan Trachtenberg has a long history with Hall H. For eight years in a row, he lined up and waited overnight to witness some of San Diego Comic-Con’s most epic moments, from the first footage of Iron Man to the moment the Avengers assembled. “I was here for the infamous pencil stabbing,” Trachtenberg told the sold-out crowd. “I was a material witness.”

But on Friday, it was time for Trachtenberg to make a little Hall H history of his own — as the “Predator” guru debuted new footage from not one, but two of his entries in the “Predator” franchise.

‘Predator: Badlands’ First 15 Minutes Unveiled At Comic-Con
Image
There’s no Marvel here at Comic-Con this year, but Disney has a one-two punch with 20th Century Studios’ Predator: Badlands, followed by Tron: Ares.

Before the first 15 minutes were shown, the Badlands panel began with one of the Predator warriors coming on stage and scanning the Hall H audience with his uber-multi-color-vision. Suddenly he spotted the moderator, filmmaker Kevin Smith.

The director joked, “I don’t speak [Predator] Yautja, but I’m pretty sure he said something about the Jeffrey Epstein files!”

Smith also teased whether director Dan Trachtenberg will be the Alien vs. Predator guy, which drew great cheers from the crowd.

Appearing on stage were Trachtenberg, Elle Fanning, Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and VFX maestro Alec Gillis. In Badlands, a young Predator outcast from his clan finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary. It...

Killer Of Killer's Predator Variants Explained By Co-Director
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Predator: Killer of Killers

Co-director Josh Wassung shed some light on the creation of the three different Predators who battle humans across time in the animated anthology Predator: Killer of Killers. In a spiritual follow-up to Dan Trachtenberg's Prey, which saw a more primitive Predator variant slaughter Comanche warriors on the Great Plains in the 1700s, Predator: Killer of Killers pits new Predator variants against other warrior cultures from human history. The three human warriors featured in the movie are a ninth-century Viking warlord, a 17th-century Japanese samurai, and a WWII fighter pilot, each of whom faces a completely different Predator variant.

During an interview with ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier conducted upon the release of Predator: Killer of Killers, co-director Josh Wassung provided insight into how each of the distinct Predators was chosen for their respective stories. Each variant has a different physical build and different weaponry,...

‘Predator: Badlands’ – Dan Trachtenberg Previews His “Big, Crazy Swing” [Interview]
Image
With the upcoming animated anthology movie Predator: Killer of Killers, Dan Trachtenberg imagines how Yautja warriors would fare against earthly rivals from different warfare eras. Exciting, right? Well, Predator: Badlands is an even bigger swing. As revealed in its first trailer, Trachtenberg’s live action Predator sequel will follow an underdog Yautja “runt” in a protagonist role, which is newfound territory for the Predator universe.

In addition to sharing the trailer for Predator: Badlands, Bloody Disgusting was exclusively shown the first twenty(ish) minutes of Trachtenberg’s upcoming film, with the caveat that footage was unfinished in various VFX stages. We were intimately introduced to the main character, Dek (played in costume and motion-capture by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), laying the groundwork for a backward Predator experience where we’re rooting for, sympathizing with and explicitly following a Predator’s journey.

“None of it was made with intention”: Dan Trachtenberg Calls Arnold’s Predator ‘Garbage’ for 1 Reason That ‘Predator: Badlands’ Won’t Repeat
Image
If you thought Predator lore was deep, mysterious, and full of meaningful alien intricacies… Dan Trachtenberg would like a word. Actually, several words. Possibly delivered in a newly invented alien language with grammatical structure.

In a recent press event, the Prey director pulled back the curtain on his upcoming project Predator: Badlands, and folks he did not hold back. Let’s just say if you spent years lovingly decoding Predator glyphs from 1987, you may want to sit down. Trachtenberg is swinging big with Badlands.

Not only is he bringing us to Yautja Prime, the Predator homeworld that’s mostly been comic book myth until now, he’s also setting the record straight on the franchise’s most sacred cow, the Predator’s language. And, spoiler alert, it’s not a sacred cow. It’s more of a confusing pile...

‘Werewolves’ Review
Image
Stars: Frank Grillo, Ilfenesh Hadera, Kamdynn Gary, Lou Diamond Phillips, Katrina Law, James Michael Cummings | Written by Matthew Kennedy | Directed by Steven C. Miller

Werewolves, originally titled Year 2, begins a year after a supermoon turned everyone who was exposed to it into a werewolf. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, a supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at the closest point to Earth, they have a dramatic effect on things like tides, but this one goes further than that. It unlocks mankind’s latent werewolf gene, causing unimaginable chaos and death. And now it’s about to happen again.

When we first meet Wesley Marshal he’s busy setting up defences at the home of his sister-in-law Lucy and her young daughter, Emma. They need the help because Wesley’s brother was a firefighter, killed in the line of duty during the first transformation.

Smile 2 Spoilers: New Concept Art Reveals The Final Entity Design And Pure, Unadulterated Nightmare Fuel
Image
Smile concluded by revealing the monstrous Entity, only for this year's Smile 2 to up the ante in an unforgettable final scene. During Skye Riley's final performance, the creature showed its true face before infecting her and exposing the "Smile" curse to the thousands in attendance.

That's going to make Smile 3 an even bigger movie than its predecessors, though Paramount Pictures has yet to announce threequel plans. In the meantime, concept artist Vincent Proce has just dropped some of his terrifying designs for the Entity (via FearHQ.com).

Many of his pieces are sketched in pencil, though we also have a fully illustrated final design that highlights every grotesque detail on a monster that we still know very little about; worryingly, it also appears to be damn near unstoppable from what we've seen thus far.

We recently spoke to Smile and Smile 2 director Finn Parker and asked about the Entity's role in the latter movie.

Review: Werewolves Satiates Our Hunger for Werewolf Combat
Image
Steven C. Miller’s lycan action-thriller Werewolves is a little bit Dog Soldiers, a dash of The Purge, and a decent amount of howl-and-gun excitement. It’s high on indie spirits but not clear of shortcomings. Miller’s further return to the horror genre after 2022’s smarthouse slasher Margaux feels tethered to his prior run of shoot-em-up Bruce Willis collaborations and too serious for its good. Legendary SFX artist Alec Gillis designs all the film’s snarling monsters, a highlight of Werewolves, but something else is missing from the experience that prevents this scrappy creature feature from breaking into the furry subgenre’s upper echelon.

Frank Grillo stars as Wesley Marshall, the hunky molecular biologist for a rapid response team trying to cure the world of a global werewolf event. Once a year, a supermoon alters human DNA and turns anyone into a mythical wolf-person. Under program honcho Dr. Aranda...

How ‘Werewolves’ Director Steven C. Miller Brought Dozens of Werewolves to the Big Screen [Interview]
Image
Silent Night director Steven C. Miller‘s latest doesn’t just feature a single werewolf on the prowl, but dozens in action horror movie Werewolves. It’s the type of setup that’s exciting for werewolf fans yet daunting in scope due to the stunts and creature work required.

It’s also exactly what excited Miller about Matthew Kennedy’s script. “The writer just brought it to me pretty early on, and so I fell in love with it instantly,” Miller tells Bloody Disgusting. “I couldn’t believe how much mayhem was happening in the script, especially with the werewolves. I was baffled that we were going to try to get this many werewolves on screen. So, I fell in love with it right away. The process really was trying to find people that actually wanted to make it. Because I’m sure you’re aware that in Hollywood, for some reason,...

'Werewolves' Review | Bloody Fun at a Fast Pace
Image
In Werewolves, director Steven C. Miller delivers a nonstop action-horror thrill ride spanning one diabolical night where the terror never stops. This is the kind of throwback ’80s horror film fans have been waiting for. The fangs come out. Sharp claws cut deep. Blood spills with reckless abandon. Despite some trips along the way, this is a freakishly fun film, anchored by a classic horror movie look, exceptional use of practical effects, and a gripping action-infused story that keeps the audience invested in the drama.

Here's the lowdown: One year ago, a supermoon turned many people into werewolves. It wasn’t a one-time event. Twelve months later, everybody is at risk once again. Seems that the supermoon event triggered a dormant gene in every human being on the planet, meaning that anybody who entered the moonlight the previous year will inevitably transform into a werewolf for yet another night. Chaos...

'Werewolves' Director Targets Major Horror Franchises Next
Image
If indie film titan Steven C. Miller has his way, he could be at the helm of (yet another) reboot of two of the most iconic horror franchises in history, Halloween and Friday the 13th. In a recent interview with MovieWeb discussing his new horror thriller, Werewolves, Miller was candid about a not-so-hidden wish he holds about diving into the perfect kind of film project. “Obviously, it's been done so many times with Halloween, but I just love that character so much that I would love to take a stab at Halloween. I mean, another one would be Friday the 13th.” He added:

“Both of those [have] such iconic characters [Michael Myers and Jason]. To be able to try to put my name in the ring for something like that would be really fun, and to try to give it something that hasn't been done would also be a super big...

How ‘Werewolves’ Reminded Practical Effects Legend Alec Gillis of Working on ‘Aliens’ [Interview]
Image
A supermoon triggers a latent gene, transforming anyone and everyone whose skin touches moonlight into a feral beast in Steven C. Miller’s (Silent Night) Werewolves. That premise alone highlights the scope of ambition and challenges for an independent action-horror feature: Frank Grillo fighting his way through hordes of werewolves requires a lot of stunt and creature work. Luckily, Werewolves boasts a lot of talent on screen and off in delivering just that, including SFX legend and werewolf designer/effects creator Alec Gillis of Studio Gillis.

Gillis’ expansive career has given horror fans no shortage of cherished movie monsters, from the Aliens to Predator to the eerie monster in Smile and Smile 2. Yet despite such an impressive career, Werewolves marks a major first for the artist. “Technically, it’s my first werewolf. Although,” Gillis points to a mask in his office when speaking with Bloody Disgusting via Zoom, “this...

Werewolves' Steven C. Miller & Frank Grillo Talk Mixing Action & Horror, Genre Influences & The Purge 6
Image
Frank Grillo and Steven C. Miller are bringing a unique twist to an iconic horror monster in Werewolves. After making his debut with the grisly horror movie Automation Transformation, Miller went on to find success directing both horror and action projects, including 2012's Silent Night, a remake of the 1984 cult classic, and multiple Bruce Willis movies, including 2015's Extraction and 2017's First Kill. Grillo is similarly known for his work in both genres, namely starring in multiple installments of The Purge franchise and playing Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Rick Flag Sr. in James Gunn's upcoming DC Universe reboot.

Grillo stars in Werewolves as Wesley Marshall, a biological scientist and former special ops soldier studying the supermoon event that occurred one year before the film's start, in which every human on the planet had a latent gene triggered that turned millions into the titular creatures...

Now, one of his deadly designs can be yours!

That’s not all! To increase your chances of winning, star Frank Grillo has also signed 10 posters for 10 lucky winners. All told, that’s 11 chances to win. We like those odds.

In Smile 2, about to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.

We can't recommend the sequel highly enough, particularly as it ups the ante and delivers some of the best scares we've seen on screen this year. At the helm is Smile franchise creator Parker Finn who returns to write and direct.

Last week, we got to sit down with the filmmaker for a discussion about his approach to this movie. As well as breaking down how he directs the "Smile," Finn also explains the Entity's evolution and the immense amount of work that went into creating its new and improved design.

Around the time he makes his Dcu debut as Rick Flag Sr. in the animated Creature Commandos series (he will also play the character in live-action in Superman and Peacemaker season 2), Frank Grillo will go up against a lot of lycanthropes in a new horror movie from director Steven C. Miller.

‘Smile 2’ Required the Biggest Creature Alec Gillis Has Created Since the ‘Aliens’ Queen [Spoilers]
Image
Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for Smile 2.

Writer/Director Parker Finn goes bigger and harder in every way when it comes to the horror in Smile 2. That includes the film’s finale, topping the original’s ghastly monstrosity reveal on a much larger scale.

The sequel follows global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), who begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events right as she’s preparing to embark on a world tour.

Smile 2, leaning harder into its R-rating this round, doesn’t waste any time addressing the fate of Joel (Kyle Gallner), the kind police officer who received the horrific curse at the end of Smile. Any hopes that Joel would take center stage in Smile 2 were quelled immediately with the hyper-violent opening sequence that saw his character suffer a rather gruesome demise, but not before passing his affliction to drug dealer Lewis Fregoli...

Before he makes his Dcu debut as Rick Flag Sr. in the animated Creature Commandos series (he will also play the character in live-action in Superman and Peacemaker season 2), Frank Grillo will go up against a lot of lycanthropes in a new horror movie from director Steven C. Miller.

Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is coming our way early next year (we're expecting a new trailer this week), but before that, a much less serious and more action-oriented werewolf movie is set to howl into theaters.

The first trailer for Werewolves is now online. The movie, which has been described as "The Purge with werewolves," has a killer premise: "One year ago, a Supermoon turned millions into werewolves. This December, it’s happening again.”

What more could you possibly need to know?

Joining Grillo in supporting roles will be Katrina Law (NCIS), Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather Of Harlem), James Michael Cummings...

Review: Smile 2 is a Scarier, Grander Powerhouse Sequel
Image
What are you looking for in a sequel? Dependable familiarity or narrative evolutions? Parker Finn's Smile 2 is a sharper, meaner, and despicably addictive amplification of Smile that doesn’t tamper with what works. Finn's execution of trauma-driven haunts is an upgrade across the board, albeit recognizable. It's funnier, flashier, scarier, and doesn't feign complacency even for a millisecond. Smile 2 is an invigoration of exposed demonic templates (typed by someone lukewarm on Finn's successful original). Move over, Lady Raven; Skye Riley's taking center stage.

Naomi Scott is a knockout as pop music megastar Skye Riley, an ex-addict who's just announced her hotly anticipated "Welcome Back" tour. She's a sober and rebranded shell of herself but pushes forward, driven by the pressures of not letting down her ravenous fans, profiting record executives (Raúl Castillo), or supportive loved ones. Skye's mother and acting manager, Elizabeth (Rosemarie DeWitt), keeps a...

‘Smile 2’ Review – Parker Finn’s Confident Sequel Goes Bigger and Scarier
Image
Parker Finn refuses to take the safest, most obvious path in Smile 2, the follow-up to his 2022 hit film. Adhering to the time-honored tradition of going bigger and harder for the horror sequel, Smile 2 declares itself a far more ruthless and intense journey from its opening sequence, a shockingly violent re-introduction into this bleak world. It’s not just the sequel’s razor-sharp and inventive, gory scares that surpass its predecessor, but a profoundly complicated heroine shaping the edgier style of horror.

Smile 2 picks up days after the first film’s events, tracking the curse’s path to world-famous pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) just as she’s preparing to launch her new global tour. Two things become immediately clear: the entity seems much more savage this round, and Skye is a deeply flawed and fragile character. This tour has a lot riding on it, not just...

How ‘Alien: Romulus’ Dp Galo Olivares Captured That Gruesome Chestbursting Scene
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article discusses plot points in “Alien: Romulus,” now playing in theaters.

In case you haven’t heard, Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” is terrifying, and yes, it does feature a chestbursting scene.

But this is Álvarez, the director behind “Don’t Breathe” and the “Evil Dead” reboot. Not only is it terrifying, but his take on the iconic chestbursting scene is bloodier.

Joining Variety’s Inside the Frame, cinematographer Galo Olivares shared the one directive he had from Álvarez for the film. “Go up to see what is going on; react to the scene,” Olivares said. “It was pretty straightforward. It was no tricks… as if we were documenting something.”

Moments earlier, Andy (David Jonsson), Tyler (Archie Renaux) and Bjorn (Spike Fearn) are searching for fuel for their cryo chambers and accidentally trigger an emergency lockdown, which traps them in a section of the ship. Unbeknownst to them,...

In ‘Alien: Romulus,’ Xenomorphs and Facehuggers Walk Into a Zero-Gravity Elevator…
Image
For “Alien: Romulus,” director Fede Álvarez was able to make the iconic Xenomorphs and Facehuggers even more badass than in Ridley Scott’s masterful “Alien” (1979). And he did so even while adhering as closely as possible to H.R. Giger’s original designs (with minor exceptions for heightened emphasis) since his re-imagining takes place between “Alien” and “Aliens” (1986) on an abandoned research station.

Álvarez also shot as much as he could practically in camera, relying on suits, animatronics, and puppets from Legacy Effects. This was part of the tactile vibe, and it was key for the actors to have creatures to play against and react to. Thus, the physical effects (supervised by Alec Gillis) worked seamlessly with the fast-moving, action-packed VFX (production supervised by Eric Barba).

“It’s really when the Facehuggers or the Xenos have to move in ways that a puppet, or a guy in a suit, or animatronic Xeno couldn’t,...

Aileen Wu found Alien: Romulus Facehugger scenes 'disgusting'
Aileen Wu has admitted it was "really disgusting" filming her Facehugger scenes for ‘Alien: Romulus’. The actress plays space coloniser Navarro in the sci-fi horror film where she is attacked by one of the parasitic lifeforms during the team’s exploration of an abandoned space station that holds a blood-thirsty Xenomorph and the actress has described her uncomfortable experience shooting scenes with the creature. She told IndieWire: "It’s just that one profile shot, the f******* disgusting thing coming off out of my body. With the hugger itself, there was someone on the controllers maneuvering the fingers, so it was struggling while it was getting pulled off my face, and then there was someone doing the bit [in my throat], and then there was someone on lube duty because everything, every inch of that creature, was lubed up. "That was really disgusting. Someone had a bucket for me, and would run in...
