And Then Come the Nightjars Director and Star on Getting Adaptations Right
Image
When adapting any stage play into a feature film, the same thematic elements that lifted the original production should be treated with care in order for the new version to keep the same storytelling value. Along with various atmospheric nuances that must be transferred over from the small stage and actors finding ways to evolve their characters to better fit the cinematic lens, a great deal of understanding and even respect is needed to transform one medium into another in order to keep the legacy of the original work alive, even if there are reinterpretations.

This was most recently the case for the theatrical version of And Then Come the Nightjars, a precious tale of a farmer and his vet. These two men, Micheal and Jeff, suddenly form the most harrowing of bonds due to the Foot and Mouth disease that plagued many farms in the English countryside during the early 2000s.

A Lifetime of Mutual Resentment Derails a Birthday Celebration in Emily Munster’s ‘Norma’
Image
There is nothing extraordinary about Norma. A sweet-natured and caring elderly lady, she bears a crown of hair curlers on her head and the weight of decades of marriage on her shoulders. But today is Norma’s birthday and she has finally had enough of her daughter’s constant complaints and her husband’s barely concealed resentment. Written and directed by Emily Munster during lockdown No.1, Norma is a character study of a woman trapped in her house and in the memories of her long-lost youth, giving the nine-minute darkly funny short huge emotional heft and crowd appeal. Grounded by a winning central performance by Susie Blake, the film showcases the importance of dreaming and seeking happiness at every stage in life, without ever slipping into saccharine or self-pitying waters. We are celebrating the online premiere of Norma with cake and plenty of insights from Munster – from the reasons behind...

And Then Come the Nightjars review – farmer and vet at centre of drama of rural life
David Fielder in Superman III (1983)
This screen adaptation of Bea Roberts’s play has a compelling concept but yields disappointing results

Based on a play – a painfully obvious fact given the stiltedness of the dialogue – by Bea Roberts, this small-scale British drama revolves almost entirely around two characters who are followed over a number of years. The early scenes, set in 2001, establish the affectionate friendship between Devon dairy farmer Michael (David Fielder), recently widowed and judging by the beard eligible for a pension soon, and local veterinarian Jeff (Nigel Hastings), a younger man with a budding drink problem.

When foot-and-mouth disease reaches their neck of the moors, Jeff is compelled to put down Michael’s entire herd according to governmental guidelines. Michael tries to resist with an unloaded shotgun and some choice curse words aimed at the ministerial enforcers who accompany Jeff, but there’s no stopping the forces of change. As the years pass,...

First Trailer for British Farmer Drama 'And Then Come the Nightjars'
Image
"You're a colossal and perpetual pain in the ass!" "No, you are a pain in the ass...!" Finite Films in the UK has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled And Then Come the Nightjars, opening in UK cinemas this fall. Adapted for the screen from Bea Roberts' multi-award-winning stage play, And Then Come the Nightjars tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a Devon farmer and the vet who is assigned to cull his precious herd. Nigel Hastings and David Fielder reprise their hugely successful on-stage roles as Jeff and Michael, with the play's director Paul Robinson making his feature length film directorial debut. It's about friendship and survival and tough times. Ahead of the film's theatrical release, And Then Come the Nightjars will also have special Q&a screenings at the Chichester Film Festival with Nigel Hastings, David Fielder and Paul Robinson in August if...
