When he was in college, his girlfriend left him for a man named Bernard. In each of his screenplays, there is a fairly unpopular character named Bernard.

His family's original surname was Cicuto of Italian origin. According to an interview in early 2019 to The Russell Howard Hour (2017), Curtis said that his father was an Italian named Anton Cicuto (which later anglicised his name to Anthony Curtis).
