The 7 performances that Adam Sandler should have been Oscar-nominated for
Image
On July 25, It's time to head back to the links — and the 1990s — with Adam Sandler. The star is picking up his golf clubs again for Netflix's Happy Gilmore 2, a belated follow-up to the 1996 golf comedy that propelled him onto Hollywood's comedy A-list. It's the first time that Sandler has revisited one of those vintage comedies; to date, his only live-action sequels to previous successes have been Grown-Ups 2 and Murder Mystery 2.

Interestingly, Happy Gilmore 2 is arriving on Netflix one month ahead of Sandler's latest seriocomic turn; the actor will be starring alongside George Clooney in Noah Baumbach's Venice-bound feature Jay Kelly. And the two actors will likely be joined at the hip throughout awards season as Clooney positions himself for his first Best Actor nomination since The Descendants way back in 2013. (He won a Best Supporting Actor statuette in 2007 for Syriana.)

Meanwhile, Jay Kelly...

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Leonardo DiCaprio-Led ‘One Battle After Another’ Gets Beyoncé-Backed Trailer
Image
“One Battle After Another” is inching closer, and the film dropped a new trailer Thursday to keep up the excitement.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro (among others), arrives in theaters on Sept. 26. And after an enigmatic trailer and some smaller clips (including one that is currently playing before “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” at the Vista in Los Angeles), a new trailer has debuted online. Watch it below.

Clearly this is more in line with what you would imagine a studio-cut trailer to be. It more explicitly spells out the plot, with DiCaprio’s Bob starting out as a more passionate revolutionary and rejoining the fray after his child (Chase Infiniti from Apple’s “Presumed Innocent” series) is abducted by a psychopathic colonel (Penn). It’s even set to a jaunty Beyoncé tune most closely associated with the presidential campaign for Kamala Harris.

‘One Battle After Another’ New Trailer: Leonardo DiCaprio Is a Vigilante with No Fear in PTA’s 10th Movie
Image
“Freedom is no fear, just like Tom Cruise,” Benicio Del Toro tells Leonardo DiCaprio, mid-car-chase, in the latest trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another.” And that’s right before DiCaprio heaves himself out of a moving car.

Anderson’s 10th feature, his second Thomas Pynchon-inspired adaptation after “Inherent Vice,” is likely to skip fall festivals altogether after being a no-show on this week’s Venice or TIFF lineups. The pot-fueled Southern California noir “Inherent Vice” actually was Anderson’s last movie to play festivals — then the New York Film Festival — as he opted to skip the circuit for Oscar nominees “Phantom Thread” and “Licorice Pizza.”

The new trailer offers a deeper look at “One Battle After Another’s” action set pieces, all set to Beyoncé’s rousing “Freedom” off her 2016 album “Lemonade.” With DiCaprio uniting with Anderson for the first time, the cast also includes del Toro,...

Leonardo DiCaprio’s New Action Thriller Drops Intense Trailer

According to reports the film is backed by Warner Bros. Pictures and comes with a budget that has grown to over $140 million. Warner reportedly believes DiCaprio’s history at the box office justifies the cost.

Full Trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another Brings the Anarchy

We’re now just two months away from Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly anticipated One Battle After Another. Ahead of the September 26 release, which features an IMAX and 70mm roll-out, Warner Bros. has now finally started to kick up the marketing as the first full Kendrick Lamar-backed trailer has arrived along with a set of character posters.

Marking the director’s long-awaited collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio after they attempted to work together for Boogie Nights some three decades ago, the action-thriller-comedy draws from Thomas Pynchon’s sprawling 1990 novel Vineland. While the novel was set in the Reagan era, PTA has shifted to the modern day, telling the story of a father who has left behind his radical past and is now living a quiet life on the lam with his daughter. When Sean Penn’s white supremacist Colonel character returns from the past to track them down, they must go on the run.

Trailer drops for Jasmin Gordon’s ‘The Courageous’
Paul Thomas Anderson
MetFilm Distribution has debuted a trailer for the compelling drama ‘The Courageous.’

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Switzerland’s Valais region, the film follows Jule (Ophélia Kolb), an eccentric and defiant single mother of three who’s had enough of playing by society’s rules. Crushed by past mistakes and disillusioned by a social welfare system that offers little compassion—or second chances—Jule fights to prove, both to her children and to herself, that she’s still a good person. As she navigates the line between resilience and self-deception, her journey becomes a powerful exploration of love, dignity, and the fierce determination to hold her family together against all odds.

In her poignant debut feature, director Jasmin Gordon delivers a nuanced portrait of a woman rarely seen on screen — flawed, loving, and fiercely human — while shedding light on the invisible struggles of the working poor and the quiet pressures of societal expectation.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Explosive Black Comedy Action Film ‘One Battle After Another’ gets new trailer
Paul Thomas Anderson
Acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson returns with a wickedly subversive black comedy action film, ‘One Battle After Another,’ and a new trailer has finally arrived—promising a stylish, high-stakes thrill ride brimming with grit, absurdity, and nostalgia-drenched chaos.

Leonardo DiCaprio leads the all-star ensemble in this modern-day adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s cult classic Vineland. Set in the fragmented haze of 1984 Northern California, the film tackles the lingering fallout of the 1960s counterculture as it collides with the cold realities of Reagan-era America.

The trailer opens with sun-bleached flashbacks and VHS fuzz, before snapping into the present with DiCaprio’s jaded ex-revolutionary—grizzled, cynical, and in hiding—being dragged back into the fray. When his estranged daughter vanishes, abducted by a vengeful adversary long thought dead, he’s forced to rally his old comrades for one last, ludicrous mission.

Joining him are powerhouse talents Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn,...

The first reactions for Zach Cregger’s Weapons say it’s a terrifyingly strong follow-up to Barbarian with Magnolia vibes
Zach Cregger
It’s been three years since up-and-coming horror filmmaker Zach Cregger unleashed Barbarian on unsuspecting audiences. The mysterious film, starring Bill Skarsgård, Georgina Campbell, and Justin Long, generated early buzz thanks to its unpredictability, unconventional premise, and enthusiasm from die-hard horror buffs. The Ben Affleck Sci-Fi Movie That Bradley Cooper Missed Out On
Image
Bradley Cooper continues to be omnipresent on the big screen, but even for the A-lister, the road has been bumpy on occasion. Cooper didn't think he would land his game-changing "The Hangover" role in 2009, and he might have completely quit acting if it weren't for Paul Thomas Anderson's 2021 film "Licorice Pizza."

The actor/filmmaker's first screen role was a 1999 guest star turn on "Sex and the City," which was by no means a small accomplishment considering the show's popularity at the time. However, Cooper originally aimed for loftier things. In fact, had the multi-hyphenate had his way, he would have scored the role of A.J. Frost (ultimately played by Ben Affleck) in Michael Bay's 1998 sci-fi disaster film "Armageddon." In a 2013 interview with NPR's Terry Gross, Cooper described his early DIY audition processes:

"There would be calls for, I remember, 'The Patriot' for the Heath Ledger role,...

Martin Scorsese at an event for Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Are these the best needle drops in movie history? You tell us!
Martin Scorsese at an event for Golden Globe Awards (2010)
What came first – the music or the misery? The perfect needle drop can help elevate a movie to perfection. It’s not the only factor, but when a song hits at just the right moment – be it a character introduction, a moment of realization, a drug deal gone sour… – it can make it the scene. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter spun the hits as they released a list of what they consider the 40 Best Needle Drops in Movies. So let’s take a look, discuss and – as is custom with any professional list – rip it to shreds!

THR made a smart choice in listing the movies alphabetically, therefore foregoing any additional favoritism or having to pick the definitive needle drop as #1. Another rule they implemented was that there could only be one song per filmmaker, although they lifted this for one director specifically – yes, it’s Martin Scorsese.

The One Film Tom Cruise Wishes He Never Made – And How It Changed His Hollywood Destiny Forever
Image
Tom Cruise’s Film That He Still Regrets ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

There’s one movie Tom Cruise wishes he could erase from his filmography—and it’s not the one you’re thinking. Long before Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, the Hollywood superstar found himself in a film so forgettable, even he openly regrets doing it. Losin’ It came early in Tom Cruise’s career. It was an adult comedy meant for teens that landed in 1982. The movie followed a group of boys chasing after the usual coming-of-age plot. The Mission: Impossible star did not like it back then, and the years have not changed his mind. The film did not offer much in the way of substance, and he later admitted it taught him something important: that he never wanted to do that kind of project again.

Magnolia Ending Explained: What Did The Frogs Falling from The Sky Signify in Tom Cruise’s Best Role?
Image
The ending to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia is as surreal as it gets, especially with the raining of frogs. The ensemble cast, starring Tom Cruise at the forefront, is an intimate exploration of existence and the messiness of life. Featuring an interconnected story of nine characters, when each stories reach its breaking point, the climax sees a sudden downpour of frogs from the sky.

From a misogynistic self-help guru struggling with his childhood trauma to a guilt-ridden TV host desperate for forgiveness, each of the characters is pushed to reckon with their emotional burdens in the wake of the frog rain.

What’s the Biblical Significance of Frogs Falling from the Sky in Magnolia?

Although the rain of frogs lacks a realistic explanation, the religious and thematic connotations do chime well with what the ending truly stands for. For the unversed, frogs in the Bible are often associated with plague,...

Matt Damon's Early Western Flop Found A Fan In Quentin Tarantino
Image
There are few interview subjects more candid, unpredictable, and downright entertaining than Quentin Tarantino. As far as filmmakers go, he exists on a saltily rarified plane with trash-talker supreme Orson Welles. He can be dishy, prickly and outrageously cocky, but as arguably the most influential filmmaker of his generation, he's at least earned the right to sound off on all things cinematic. And while I don't always agree with him, I appreciate that his opinions are coming from a fiercely sincere and deeply knowledgeable place.

While I enjoy Tarantino's brashness, I think he's at his very best when he goes to the mat for underappreciated film artists. Soon after he broke through with "Reservoir Dogs" in 1992 and established himself as an outspoken cinephile, he championed the films of Brian De Palma. This was not exactly an opportune time to sing the director's praises, as he'd just hit the skids...

AMC Theatres Gets Stock Upgrade on Outlook of “More Consistent” Blockbuster Releases
Image
Is the worst behind AMC Theatres and its beleaguered stock price? One Wall Street analyst thinks so.

With Hollywood at last giving the mega-exhibitor the certainty in its supply of tentpole releases needed to get film lovers back in the habit of going to the multiplex, Wedbush analyst Alicia Reese on Friday upgraded stock in AMC from neutral to outperform and set a $4.00 price target, from $3.00.

Reese argued in a July 11 investor note AMC “is poised to benefit from a more consistent release slate over the next several quarters,” and gain market share through to 2026 in North America and Europe. That good news for a company attempting to get out of a financial hole brought on by the pandemic lifted parent AMC Entertainment Holdings shares by 30 cents, or 10 percent, to $3.30 on Friday morning.

The Wedbush analysis is also more sanguine about AMC’s debt woes after the company repaid or...

David Zaslav Is the Good Guy? Why He Might Have Saved Turner Classic Movies
Image
We’ve made no secret of our quibbles with David Zaslav’s oversight of Turner Classic Movies. In June 2023, I wrote a critical op-ed (“Dear David Zaslav: Gutting TCM Will Not Help You Win Filmmakers Back to Warner Bros.”) right after the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO presided over layoffs amounting to 80 percent of the staff.

So it might come as some surprise that I’m now feeling bullish about the news that Zaslav and Warner Bros. co-heads Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy will retain creative control over TCM as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to split into two companies. (This arrangement was first reported by Variety and confirmed by IndieWire.) One will be the Studios and Streaming group, a business that oversees film and TV production, with Zaslav retained as CEO. The other is the Global Networks group, home to the present company’s entire suite of linear TV channels, with new CEO Gunnar Wiedenfels,...

Arrow Video’s Modern-Style ‘Lost in Space’ Trailer Debuts Ahead of 4K Uhd Release | Exclusive
Image
“Lost in Space” is back from the darkest recesses of the cosmos.

Arrow Video, one of the great boutique home video labels, is bringing Stephen Hopkins’ 1998 space opera, based on Irwin Allen’s 1965 television series, back with a deluxe 4K Uhd package stuffed with special features this September. And as part of the release, Arrow has created a modern-style trailer, which you can watch below.

If you never saw “Lost in Space” when it was originally released, it smartly repurposed many elements from the original series – the robot, the villainous Doctor Smith (played here by a mustache-twirling Gary Oldman) and the Robinson family – while adding more twists and turns. If the original series was “Swiss Family Robinson” in space, this was considerably more complex. And much of that should be given to Hopkins, who was one of the more underrated auteurs of the decade, consistently bringing audiences thrilling, visually inventive popcorn movies.

Turner Classic Movies Will Stay on David Zaslav’s Side of Warner Bros. (Exclusive)
Image
Turner Classic Movies has carved out a special custody arrangement in the forthcoming Warner Bros. Discovery split, Variety has learned exclusively.

The classic film channel — beloved by Hollywood heavyweights and cinephiles around the world — has set a co-management structure ahead of Wbd’s planned separation. Creative functions like programming and strategy will remain with CEO David Zaslav’s Studios and Streaming Group, while distribution and business operations will be handled by Gunnar Wiedenfels’ Global Networks spinoff company.

Fellow brands like CNN, TNT Sports and Discovery will fully cross over with Wiedenfels. TCM will be the only channel with this agreement. In 2023, Zaslav gave creative oversight of the channel to Warner Bros. Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who will remain in charge. Keeping the station in the world of film creatives was a priority for Zaslav, two sources added.

“David Zaslav’s deep appreciation for TCM is long-standing,...

4 Christopher Nolan Films Featured in Major 21st Century Movie Ranking by Over 200,000 People

Christopher Nolan is once again in the spotlight, and it’s not because of a new movie. This time, it’s thanks to a ranking by The New York Times, which recently shared its list of the 100 best movies of the 21st century.

That’s a pretty bold move, considering the century’s not even halfway over, but the list got a lot of attention, and Nolan’s name showed up more than anyone else’s.

According to The New York Times, five of Nolan’s movies made the cut. That’s more than any other director on the list. It’s a reminder of just how much of an impact he’s had over the past 25 years. From his breakout moment with Memento to massive hits like Inception and The Dark Knight, Nolan has been behind some of the biggest and most talked-about films of this generation.

And while it might feel a little early to rank a whole century’s worth of films, the list is packed with a mix of styles, genres, and directors, and yes, plenty of Nolan.

According to The New York Times, five of Nolan’s movies made the list, which is more than any other director. That’s a pretty big deal. 'One Battle After Another' Teaser Finds Leonardo at the Center of Warped Action Comedy
Image
The next film from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson has had some interesting marketing thus far, with the film having received only a couple of teaser trailers and one poster. The director, who is best known for classic films such as There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights, has famously kept many of the plot details of his films secret up until release. The same can be said for One Battle After Another, which is due for release in September, with still next to nothing known about the movie besides the basic plot, in which Leonardo DiCaprio's character takes action in the search for his daughter.

The first trailer, released three months ago, showcased some exciting imagery, painting the film as the most action-packed that Anderson has made thus far. Now, a new 44-second teaser (which can be viewed below) features additional footage from the upcoming film, including more...

One Battle After Another | New teaser emerges for Paul Thomas Anderson’s thriller
Image
Ahead of its September release, another glimpse at one of this year’s most anticipated films: One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Paul Thomas Anderson being given lots of money to go and make something that looks strangely close to an action film is shaping up to be 2025’s most fascinating throw of the dice for any studio. Warner Bros has already benefited once this year from backing a talented auteur with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. We’re hoping the studio enjoys the same success with September’s One Battle After Another. While Warner Bros boss David Zaslav keeps talking about leaning into franchise films and the like, repeated hits from unique filmmakers will surely persuade him to keep investing in interesting and original cinema, too. Hopefully.

So even though Warner Bros has now released a second teaser for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another,...

Persistence of Vision: Tom Gunning, Rockstar Academic
Image
Illustrations by Stephanie Monohan. We begin with the unprocessed burst from the flare end of the camera roll, a fleeting, almost accidental image that will mirror the film’s final fade. Then, a flurry of opaque, milky strokes begins to churn, like dancing dust particles violently uprooted by a gust of wind. This is our immediate visual field. Slowly, behind this initial wave of chalky bands—now revealing themselves as slightly more defined forms with a faster, more chaotic movement—true three-dimensionality begins to emerge. We soon start to wonder: Is there more that will come into view? Will this impression of depth keep getting deeper? A blurry, reddish figure persists in the distance, stubbornly resisting focus. Gradually, it begins to sharpen. And finally, the initial queries are resolved: The white lines are snowfall; the red is a brick wall. The endless, mysterious depth we initially perceived—a promise, perhaps,...

Weapons: runtime for the new horror film from the director of Barbarian cracks the 2 hour mark
Georgina Campbell in Barbarian (2022)
Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger has assembled a strong cast for his mysterious horror project called Weapons, including Julia Garner (Ozark), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives)… and we’re going to have the chance to see that cast face the horrors Cregger has conjured up when Weapons reaches theatres on August 8th. Cregger has said that he was drawing inspiration from Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia when he was crafting this one – but now we have confirmation that his movie actually won’t be nearly as long as Magnolia. While Anderson’s movie had a running time of 188 minutes, Cregger’s film has the more bladder-friendly runtime of 128 minutes. Which is 26 minutes longer than Barbarian.

Christopher Nolan's 17-Year-Old Masterpiece Crowned His Best Movie By Industry-Led Poll
Image
Christopher Nolan had several movies appear in a new ranking of the best movies of the 21st century, but his highest-ranking movie is the one many call his masterpiece. Nolan has cemented himself as the biggest director of tentpole movies working in Hollywood today, a fact solidified by his Best Picture win for Oppenheimer.

Now Nolan has five movies named among the 100 best movies of the last 25 years in a new industry-led poll. While celebrated directors like Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson also have multiple movies on the list, Nolan has the most of any other director. However, the highest-ranked movie still stands out in his career.

The Dark Knight has been named by The New York Times as Nolan's best movie of the last 25 years, which largely makes up his entire career as a professional filmmaker. The second movie in Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy landed 28th on the list,...
