‘Jersey Boys’ Trailer: They Shoulda Hung On To What They Got
I can understand the appeal of a jukebox musical on Broadway. In a way, it’s just a concert, albeit for cover artists, with a little bit of story thrown in for fun — like skits on a rap record. On the big screen, though, they just can’t be as enjoyable. There’s no live performance and, unless you find just the right movie theater or wait a number of years for a Drafthouse sing-a-long screening, there’s none of the same audience vibe you get with the real deal. I’m sure the stage incarnation of Jersey Boys is a really good time. The movie version, on the other hand, looks like a real bore of a biopic with an imitation soundtrack. It seems so generic that they’ve probably even thrown in a token sibling death for Frankie Valli. This evening we got our best look yet at the adaptation, directed...

Christmas Cards, Halloween Masks, and Movie Posters: See All of Vulture’s Breaking Bad Illustrations
Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad (2008)
Breaking Bad ends this weekend, and we're feeling reflective. So we decided to take a moment to look back at the fun we had with the show through its five seasons. And so, here is a trip through all the Breaking Bad–inspired visuals we’ve done over the course of the show’s run, from our Walter White jack-o’-lantern to our Breaking Bad Christmas card to a poster for a spring break party movie starring Walt and Jesse called Breaking Buds, and much more. Enjoy them now before the show ends and the grief is too much to bear.• Illustrator Patrick Sullivan made us a Walter White jack-o'-lantern. • Illustrator Jon Defreest made us a Jesse Pinkman Christmas card. • Jesse David Fox and Linsey Fields made these Breaking Bad infographics. • Fox also put together this photo slideshow of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul looking like the BFFs that they are.

Sean Connery and Ursula Andress in James Bond 007 contre Dr. No (1962)
What If the Drag Race Gals Were Bond Girls?
Sean Connery and Ursula Andress in James Bond 007 contre Dr. No (1962)
The tradition of Bond girls began with Dr. No's Ursula Andress and continues through Skyfall's Bérénice Marlohe. But the producers have always had such a narrow definition of what a Bond girl should be: tall, busty, sultry — and born a woman. Come on, Broccoli family, it's 2012! And so Vulture presents a suggestion for a new kind of Bond girl: The Bond Drag Queen. As an example of just how well this would work, Patrick Sullivan designed posters featuring three of RuPaul's Drag Race's most memorable contestants as classic Bond girls. See Chad Michaels as Goldfinger's Pussy Galore, Raven as Dr. No's Honey Ryder, and Latrice Royale as A View to a Kill's Mayday.

What If Are You Afraid of the Dark? Were Remade As R-Rated Horror Fare?
Surveying the Cambodian countryside as the sun sets
There is an entire generation of kids that grew up watching the spooky-when-you're-12 Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark? in the early nineties that is now old enough to tolerate more chilling, adult fright fests. But why should screenwriters search for new terrifying ideas when they could simply mine the Ayaotd back catalogue and make those old stories more nightmare-y? Patrick Sullivan has done half the work by designing eerie posters for grown-up versions of three classic episodes often cited as the series' spookiest: "The Tale of Dead Man's Float," "The Tale of the Night Nurse," and "The Tale of the Dangerous Soup" (with Neve Campbell, of course).

What if the Criterion Collection released the Harry Potter movies?
Sometimes, fans can make stuff like posters or DVD covers better than the studios, and that’s what graphic designer named Patrick Sullivan just did on his Tumblr. He took the Harry Potter saga and crafted these wonderful Criterion Collection covers. Ah, “what if?”, huh?

I’m personally a sucker for great cover art, and while Warner Bros. wisely used the theatrical posters for the Blu-ray and DVD releases, these are pretty damn sweet. Criterion is no stranger to licensing titles away from studios, but I wouldn’t hold my breathe for them to do Potter from Warner anytime soon. But still, wow…...

Check These Out: Stunning 'Harry Potter' Criterion Collection Covers
As many of you trek out to the movie theaters this weekend to end the saga, I'm sure many will be thinking about just how great all of the movies are. Warner Bros has continued to improve and deliver better movies each and every time. They're so good, one could say that they even belong in the Criterion Collection. If only. Well, a graphic designer named Patrick Sullivan designed a (faux) set of Criterion covers and cases for the 8-movie set on Tumblr, and it's just gorgeous. Do yourself a big favor and check these out, as the designs truly capture the emotional spirit and heart of the stories in creatively brilliant ways. See all 7 covers below! Click on any above of visit the Tumblr page for high res. I just love these and they're such a fitting tribute to this unforgettable series of movies, simply because they deserve this...

This Is What The U.S. AIDS Epidemic Looks Like
A new interactive map of U.S. cases shows that HIV is probably more prevalent in your neighborhood than you think.

It has been just 30 years since the first cases of HIV were diagnosed. The disease is no longer a death sentence, but it's probably more prevalent in your neighborhood than you think. Don't believe us? Check out AIDSVu, the most detailed publicly available look at HIV cases throughout the U.S.

Epidemiologist Patrick Sullivan, the principal researcher behind the project, was inspired to create the map by his 14-year tenure at the Cdc's National HIV Surveillance Program. "These surveillance data are so valuable and so many people work with great diligence to make sure that they're right," he explains. "At Cdc we produced them in tables of data surveillance reports. I felt like, wouldn't it be great if people could see and understand what these data are really about?...

DVD review: ‘Air Bud: Golden Receiver Special Edition’
Another day, another Disney reissue. Yet this time around, it’s not just a simple DVD reissue with Disney FastPlay being the only new addition. The good people at Buena Vista have now included a whistle with Air Bud emblazoned across it for the release of Air Bud: Golden Receiver. But as they say on QVC, “that’s not all.” Those yapping, cuddly puppies, Air Buddies, return for a corny sports commentator skit where they provide play-by-play and color for the final game in the film.

Air Bud: Golden Receiver is the 1998 sequel to the 1997 hit Air Bud, which followed a basketball-playing pooch. This time around, the dog plays football but that’s really the only difference between the original (well, besides a new dog. Sadly the original K9 passed away before production on the follow-up began). The story centers on young Josh Framm (Kevin Zegers) who becomes angry when his mother,...

AFF09 Daily Dispatch: Day Three
This is the stair-iest festival. My knees are killing me.  I seem destined to be climbing lots of stairs, to the point my poor knees can't take. or close to it.  Stairs at the Driskill. Stairs at the Ritz. Stairs at all the party venues.  Owwie.  I may have to put in a worker's comp claim (just kidding, Jette).

I missed the morning panels, because not having alarms set meant I woke up when I was good and ready, and that was far too late for panels before lunch. So I was very envious when Rich Vázquez tweeted about a very personal panel up on the Capital lawn with Tom Skerritt and some teachers (aka the "Teaching Storytelling Through Screenwriting" panel).

It also meant I missed the An Education screening, which has caused an uproar among some because it was booked at a small venue.  I'm rather surprised, because at...

AFF09 Daily Dispatch: Day Two
I wasn't gonna do this, really. This was the festival where I was gonna take a back seat. But despite having to start late yesterday and today, I can't help but do a daily dispatch. So here goes day two.

I missed all the panels. I didn't even get to the fest in time to do anything but hop on a shuttle to the French Legation for the annual Texas BBQ, only to find out that while the shuttles started running at 4 pm, we absolutely could not step foot onto the grounds until 5 pm (there was a wedding, that would have been rude).  As it turns out, it's quite a popular spot for weddings, because one of the filmmakers had his wedding there.

This was prime social time.  Ran into friends like Patrick Sullivan (pictured right) who is a screenplay competition finalist, and Rich Vázquez from Cine Las Americas. Later I sawSkot Tulk from aGLIFF,...

AFF09 Daily Dispatch: Day One
Day one is over, and day two is just beginning of Austin Film Festival (Food and Film event not withstanding).  There's just so much to do, with so many great panels to choose from, not to mention the films.

Registration was a but slow and confusing, but I was one of those "other" people, who had a late registration as media, and then as an Austin Film Festival member, I had a free film pass to pick up as well.  Had a chance to talk to a few friends, including Austin's Patrick Sullivan, who is a screenplay competition finalist.  I hope we get to celebrate a win there on Saturday.

I ended up seeing Slackerwood contributor Chris Holland's panel with Kelly Williams and James Faust, "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over," moderated by Greg Garrett.  Chris, as you may know, authored the book Film Festival Secrets, and as a...
