He played bass in the 1980s pop band Spandau Ballet. His older brother, Gary Kemp, was the guitarist, synthesizer player and songwriter. His other bandmates were Tony Hadley, John Keeble and Steve Norman.

His wife, Shirlie Kemp, was a back-up singer of the band Wham! and was one-half of the duo Pepsi & Shirlie.
