Ryan Murphy Comments On Netflix Removing Dahmer's LGBTQ Tag
Image
After receiving backlash from viewers, Ryan Murphy has shared his thoughts on Netflix's decision to remove the LGBTQ+ tag from the miniseries, Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story. Murphy co-created the show with his longtime collaborator Ian Brennan, which was released to Netflix on September 21st. It quickly rose to the number one spot, with over 56 million households viewing every episode within two weeks of its release. Evan Peters, another frequent collaborator of Murphy's, stars in the titular role as the infamous serial killer who preyed on gay men, most of whom were people of color, murdering and sexually assaulting 17 young men and boys between 1978 and 1991 in the American Midwest.

Though the docudrama has become a massive hit, breaking streaming records for Netflix, it has also sparked intense internet backlash. Many, including family members of Dahmer's victim and his father, have expressed outrage over the show's handling of such a delicate and traumatic subject,...

Ryan Murphy Criticizes Netflix for Removing ‘Dahmer’ LGBTQ Tag: Not All Gay Stories Should Be ‘Happy’
Image
Ryan Murphy is speaking out on Netflix’s decision to take away the LGBTQ tag on true crime series “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”

The series, starring Evan Peters as the titular serial killer who preyed on queer men, had the biggest debut ever on Netflix and was originally categorized as LGBTQ content on the streamer. However, the tag was removed two days after its September premiere due to social media backlash.

“I also don’t think that all gay stories have to be happy stories,” series creator Murphy told The New York Times. “There was a moment on Netflix where they removed the LGBTQ tag from ‘Dahmer,’ and I didn’t like it and I asked why they did that and they said because people were upset because it was an upsetting story. I was, like, ‘Well, yeah.’ But it was a story of a gay man and more importantly,...

Ryan Murphy objects to Netflix removing LGBTQ tag from Jeffrey Dahmer series following backlash
Ryan Murphy at an event for Mange prie aime (2010)
Ryan Murphy has said he disagrees with Netflix’s decision to remove the LGBTQ tag from his Jeffrey Dahmer show.

Since its release in September, Murphy’s true crime series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has been embroiled in controversy surrounding its graphic and “exploitative” content.

In it, Evan Peters stars as the serial killer and cannibal, who murdered 17 men and boys between the years 1978 and 1991.

A week after its release, Netflix removed a tag categorising the series as LGBTQ following an online backlash.

It was speculated that the reason the series was initially marked with the label was because many of Dahmer’s victims were LGBTQ, or because of the killer’s own sexuality. The reasons remain unconfirmed by Netflix.

Streamers tend to use the tag to highlight positive representatiions of LGBTQ people, and so many people took issue with it being used to promote Dahmer.

Ryan Murphy Pushes Back on Dahmer Criticism, Netflix Removing LGBTQ Tag
Image
Creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy has finally spoken out regarding the growing criticism of his Netflix biographical crime drama Dahmer– Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

The series tells the story of Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer who horrifically murdered 17 men between the years of 1978 and 1991. Despite the show’s stated goal of “exposing these unconscionable crimes, centered around the underserved victims and their communities impacted by the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police,” the series took heat for its focus on the killer’s gruesome behavior and the specific framing of his victims’ stories.

Ryan Murphy discussed his two smash hits for Netflix in a new profile with The New York Times and addressed some of the criticism around the biggest one, Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

The limited series about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer has become the biggest hit of Murphy’s prolific career, notching big streaming numbers week-to-week, including the No. 1 spot on Netflix, since its Sept. 21 release and was poised to cross 1 billion hours streamed over Halloween weekend, per Murphy. It was then threatened to be outseated by Murphy and Ian Brennan’s next limited series, The Watcher, a true-crime-inspired thriller starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale, which released Oct. 13.

But Dahmer — Monster also has received backlash from the victims’ families, some of whom accused Netflix and production of never reaching out to them, and has been criticized for exploiting trauma with...

‘Dahmer’ Director Paris Barclay Says Filming Series ‘Definitely Took Its Toll’: ‘There Were Times That I Was at Home Crying’
Image
Paris Barclay admits he didn’t initially want to direct episodes of Ryan Murphy’s “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”

“About six months before production started, Ryan called me and said, ‘We’re doing a series and we want you to be a part of it,” Barclay tells me. “I always listen to what Ryan Murphy has to offer because it’s always interesting. Ryan said, ‘It’s a miniseries about Jeffrey Dahmer,’ and I said, ‘Oh, that’s not interesting to me.’ But then he explained he wanted to tell it from the point of view of the victims.”

Barclay directed two of the Netflix series’ 10 episodes, including one focused on Tony Hughes, a Deaf and non-vocal Black man (played by newcomer Rodney Burford) who was murdered by Dahmer (played by Evan Peters) in 1991. Shortly after the series premiered, Hughes’ mother and family members of other victims...
