Two brothers, Hossam and Maro, face a difficult choice after their father's fatal workplace accident. The factory offers them jobs alongside the man responsible for their father's death as compensation.

Mohamed, the son of a modest worker, lives in Alexandria and dreams of moving to Cairo to become a filmmaker. There, he gets to know Salma and Bassam, in whom he feels he finds what he lacked in himself; namely self-confidence. After learning that both were born to seventies leftist parents who opposed an unjust state regime, he begins to search his father's history in order to find something interesting to recount to them.

The absolute truth lies in the notions of life and death...fertility indeed is the miracle of creation. But does it answer the question of happiness, or is it just an illusion? In a forgotten corner of Egypt lives a woman who is yearning for a child. Having no option but to live on the fringe of her community because of her infertility, Hanan lingers between a dream that is slowly slipping away and her struggle to find a place where she belongs. While everything that surrounds her bustles with fertility and mortality, she wonders how to give meaning to the time that she has in between.

The movie is a journey to the dark side of the Egyptian traditional folk weddings as it tells the story of the belly dancers that dance in these weddings and their complicated relationships with their husbands who happen to also manage their business. It is a world where personal feelings conflict with business and the destiny of these people is then formed.

One day, an Egyptian friend gave Danish anthropologist Christian Suhr a good piece of advice: "Stop focusing on all the darkness in the world and look at the light instead." Suhr takes us on a journey to Cairo along the Nile and into the desert to understand what light means to the people he meets along the way. Through conversations and observations of breathtaking rituals, the light slowly breaks through and nuances the image of a religion often viewed with prejudice and reduced to simplistic clichés.
