If you're looking for a good sci-fi flick, look elsewhere. This is a time-loop movie that makes absolutely no sense, goes nowhere, and DOES NOT 'star' Ian McKellen. Mr. McKellen spent maybe one hour filming one two-sentence cameo that is replayed more than once. The same sentences, that is. That's the extent of his involvement. This movie sucks and is a complete waste of your time.
I'm a BIG true-crime addict, and have been watching true crime TV for over 30 years. This show ranks with the best ever series that I've seen. The show has got to be one of the most expensive ever. The production values are fantastic, and many of the episodes star actors who, if not famous, are excellent character actors that I've seen many times and I'm sure others would recognize from many films and TV shows: Michael Madsen, Tahmoh Penikett, Louis Ferreira, etc. I usually don't like the dramatizations on most true crime TV, but the recreations on this show are excellent. But ultimately, what really sets the series apart are the presenters - always the detectives that worked the original case. They've all been deeply affected by these cases, and it shows. This makes Real Detective perhaps the most moving of any true crime documentaries shows on television. Kudos to the show runners and everyone involved. I hope there are many more seasons!
Apparently this filmmaker, Mark Cousins, is a film historian and 'expert'. If you think that you're going to see the ultimate examination of Hollywood, or even European film, forget it. This guy is gonna drag you down long corridors of boredom talking about obscure, artsy-fartsy films and directors that only a film school student/graduate or film critic would care about. For example, he makes a big deal out of Africa's contribution to film. Huh? If there are any great films or filmmakers from Africa, I never heard of them. Furthermore, as he's decided to narrate this series himself, he's not only made it unwatchable, but ABSOLUTELY unlistenable. This guy - born in England according to his Wikipedia entry - has what I can only describe as an impenetrable Irish(?) accent, rendering his narration incomprehensible, at least to my American ears. It's not just the accent. He has, without question, the worst presenter's voice I've ever heard, and I watch documentaries every single day. Avoid this - it's incredibly boring and will offer you no insights into FILM (God forbid he should use the term 'movies'). And his voice will drive you nuts.
