I just finished reading the novel "Moby Dick," so I decided to watch the John Huston version of the film.
The film is beautifully shot and the acting is very good.
The only criticism I have is that costumes and make-up on Gregory Peck were bad. The chin beard, top hat and black coat worn by Peck made him look like Abe Lincoln. Although some captains of whalers wore black coats and top hats, not all did. It would have been better if other attire had been chosen for Ahab.
The hair and beard should have been a bit rougher-looking with a bit more gray. Peck's coat should have been slightly disheveled and in a color other than black.
There are many pictures of captains of whaling ships in the whaling museum in New Bedford and also in some library collections. The costume designer should have done more research.

A very good story that focuses on how racial prejudices are detrimental to families and to communities.
The story is strong and the cast is good, except that Audrey Hepburn is not believable as a Kiowa girl. I realize that in 1960, a big star had to headline and also, very few minority actors were cast in lead roles.
Hepburn plays the part well, but just doesn't look believable in the part.
Bravo to John Huston, who along with many other Hollywood directors, actors and producers helped break through some of the prejudice. Film-goers needed to be led to a more tolerant viewpoint.
Yes, there's still work to be done, but the late-50s, 60s and 70s were a pivotal time for improving diversity and equal opportunity in the American film industry.
