I've seen an extraordinary number of movies and have come to develop a keen sensibility for all aspects of the art form (acting, directing, cinematography, writing, theme, message, etc.). The majority of movies fail to succeed in more than half of the criteria that make for an outstanding work of art. Magazine Dreams is not one of them. Bynum has given us a unique insight into a character's psyche, one that is as much a product of personal circumstance as it is of social environment, trauma, and isolation. The narrative is delivered at the appropriate pace--not rushed nor slow--with mesmerizing visuals, memorable characters, and outstanding acting that keeps the viewer engaged in the characters and their motives rather than focused on what actor is "performing" what role. This movie is reminiscent of the classic "Taxi Driver." I hope Bynum continues making movies like this. He just may earn the same accolades as Scorsese someday.
If you get past episode 7, ye of little faith will get a few treats! Not many, mind you, but a few. You will see aliens. You will discover how advanced they are. You will discover why some characters take central stage. But, be forewarned, it may still not be enough to make up for the 6 hours or so invested in what should have been a 90 min. Movie because there are major plot holes (for instance, how the humans come up with an answer in the lab--"Oh this works..."--never mind that we don't have a clue as to why that was even attempted--it's as if there was some bad editing afoot and they cut out a key event in the storyline). Good luck!
The plot of the movie is nothing extraordinary. In fact, it may even be interesting, but I couldn't be certain because the sound track seems to have been inverted, with the background noise in the film drowning out the characters' speeches. This technical issue was terribly frustrating for me, and I wonder if this was an issue in the original release.
