Airplane 2025

Airplane 2025

  • Pretty Bad

I'm assuming Asylum Films are releasing this 'reboot' of Airplane now because of the forthcoming big budget Naked Gun remake.

We all know that Asylum make low budget mockbusters and over the years have released a plethora of disaster, monster, horror and comedy rip-offs, most of which aren't very good. The Sharknado franchise has probably been their most successful.

Airplane 2025 is set in the 1970's and I was hoping, even with a low budget, that they could produce a mildly entertaining scatterbrain comedy. Unfortunately, this has none of the audio or visual humour of the original films, the script is poor and the acting isn't brilliant. Tom Arnold is the most well known name here and he pretty much sleepwalks his way through his lines.

What you will get is nothing more than a very soft core porn film, with several of the actresses spending most of the runtime topless, simulating sex and smoking weed with stupid sound effects and very annoying and constant music.

It's a shame that they didn't even try to make a comedy that had its heart in the right place. This has been released purely as slop with Asylum knowing that people will see the Airplane title and watch it out of curiosity.

  • Claustrophobic.

Judging by the reviews here this is a marmite film, you either really like it or really hate it and I can understand why. However, I love to step away from the ever increasing mediocrity of Hollywood, and delve into European and other foreign cinema and I also love slow burn movies that make you think and don't necessarily explain every little thing to you, oh and if you look at the films I watch then you'll see that horror is my favourite genre.

Hotel, is a fantastically claustrophobic and unsettling experience, beautifully filmed, directed and acted. It doesn't have your usual array of jump scares or gore and it doesn't treat you like an idiot and spell out everything that is happening, it is designed to make you think and decide for yourself what might, or might not be, happening.

From my perspective there is a story, steeped in atmosphere and it is clearly a horror film. Now before you all shout at me, horror doesn't always have to be about vampires, monsters or exorcisms with lots of blood, guts and screaming, sometimes horror can be more real and the real horror here is how poor Irene feels upon taking this new job and how how her work colleagues treat her, especially when she asks questions about what happened to the previous girl that had her job, about the forest surrounding the hotel, the cave in the forest, the story of the witch who may have lived there at some point...and, more than anything, about Irene's loneliness and how she tries and fails to establish any sort of meaningful friendship with anyone.

Although some might disagree I liken this film much more to the Folk Horror genre and the sadness and unease that permeated me while watching it, more than made up, for the lack of jump scares etc that we've all seen a million times before anyway.

I thought Franziska Weisz's performance as Irene was fantastic and I only wish I had seen it much nearer it original release.

If, like me, you love atmospheric slow burns that don't give you all the answers and that leave you thinking long after the final credits have rolled then Hotel is a film for you.

  • Not bad

The Last Breath is another entry in the incredibly long list of Shark movies.

The plot is hardly original, after all there are only so many ways you can get people into the ocean to be eaten, and the characters are your usual bunch of 30 year old college students, but it's a fairly enjoyable, popcorn experience, the sharks and injuries look pretty good, effects wise, the acting is fair and it was nice to see Julian Sands again.

You have to take everything that happens with a pinch of salt but it's certainly not as ridiculous as The Meg 2 was. If you sit down with a beer and don't expect Jaws then you should be suitably entertained.
