A story with less depth than Twilight. The CGI and cinematography are great for what it is. Though, compared to last season, this season comes off as unresolved trauma added by the writers and an obsession with disgust rather than proper gothic.
This episode has a lot of elements that could have been really cool, but it spends too much time projecting ideologies and showcasing rather than telling a story that is interesting.
If that's your thing, cool. But it's no game of thrones, and doesn't deserve a rating beyond 6/10. It's bad writing hidden by CGI.
Apparently the season was rewrote due to the cancellation of the series due to controversy around the main showrunner.

The first season was great, and could delve into sensitive topics with some nuance and interest. I appreciate when shows can do this and open up discussions or observations that are more intelligent than the common media troth we are usually subjected to.
However, the later seasons are a mess. They are overly preachy, cringe, and lack enough intrigue in the ongoing storylines to really come across as a show instead of another propaganda machine from the show creators opinionated viewpoints.
Was great, now it's too difficult to watch. Nails on a chalkboard seems to take precident over worthwhile storytelling. Spoonfed opinions are more important than prompts for the audience to think for themselves.

Why cut the whole bit with Sokka training kids? It was the heart of his character as a goof, while capturing the lighthearted comedy of the show, and making the fire nation encounter all the more intense.
These types of decision plague the entire first episode. The pacing feels rushed, making the acting feel cringe. Y'all are all out there, why not film a few small scenes to flesh out the episode and give it the heart the original has?
Most importantly, every full Avatar moment in the original brought tears to my eyes. Removing the first one and focusing on the negative one set the wrong tone.
