F1 centred on aged washed up former driver ( Pitt) through an old connection ( Bardem) gets a shot at the big time. There is the standard set up and cliche' reminiscent of Top Gun. The strength of the film firmly centres on the racing car scenes - these are exhilarating, realistic and intense. This is also elevated by the amazing score ( as usual) by Hans Zimmer The story that is threaded is ok but misses a beat. Notions of rivalry, redemption and passion are touched on but are not fleshed out as well as it could have been. There is also a sense of predictability to the story. Worth a watch - especially if you are a Racing car fan.
Rear Window revolves around wheel chair bound bachelor ( Stewart) who spies on his neighbours. He suspects foul play from one of them ( Burr) and gets his lover ( Kelly) and helper ( Ritter) to investigate. The themes of ' murder next door' and voyerism were land mark at the time and have had many rip offs since. The chemistry between Kelly and Stewart is a bit odd but they pull it off. There is also the sure hand of Hitchcock' direction which is clear to see here. The last 25 mins or so revs up the suspense to a fitting climax. It hasn't stood the test of time as much as some of his other works but is nevertheless worth a watch.
The Invisible Man is a modern day reimaging of a classic story. Technology and domestic abuse are in view as a sign of the times. Whilst there are the standard set pieces, it is mostly engaging and moves along at a good pace. This paper's over those moments of perhaps cliche' or lack of believability. There is plenty of tension as well as a few twists and turns. The movie is also elevated by a fantastic score throughout which adds to the excitement. Moss does well as the main character been stalked. A satisfying ending. Worth a watch. Ps the final credits features about 5 mins of the extended score which is well worth your time!
