Oof. This was a disappointment. The writing was so bad it's hard to believe it came from the same studio as Frozen, Encanto, and Tangled. It truly felt like the studio typed "Write a screenplay for a Disney movie" into Chat GPT and then produced it. It turns out the story really matters when it comes to storytelling and so you have to, you know, pay writers. A hit movie isn't just a fairytale formula, a hodgepodge of random past Disney references, and one hit song. Every element of this film was inconsistent and contradictory, from the 2D animation with an anime star to the characters who make zero sense. Pass.
I don't mind a mystery where I predict the end so long as I enjoy the ride getting there. That's the case for this movie.
It's marketed as noir so, like almost all noir, I predicted the end before I even pressed play. That's the problem with the genre. It has such predictable tropes that you hardly need to know anything about it to guess the ending. And this movie really embraced the classic tropes, which is one reason I liked it, and another reason I found it so predictable.
That said, the setting in Greece, the slow and steady pacing, the enigmatic characters... they made this an enjoyable film to watch. The acting was decent and so was the writing. These days, with the constant churn of streaming content where quantity matters over quality, that means something.

I don't often say this, as trailers have gone downhill lately, but the trailer for this was more interesting than the movie.
The movie was visually striking and the acting was decent but it lacked both character and plot development. We learn almost nothing about the main female lead (even though I had hoped her passion for mazes would lead somewhere) nor do any of the other characters have much depth.
As for the plot, it's overexplained and too simple. The moral of the story is black and white the whole way through without any captivating grey area, which is a huge missed opportunity when you think about the nature of sacrifice and the motivation behind most of the characters' actions.
Overall it needed more complexity and nuance. I finished thinking "meh".
