Doom 64

  • An underrated gem

Years after the Doomguy saved Earth from the demonic forces of evil, he is sent back to Phobos base to investigate an anomaly deep within the complex... what starts as a routine mission quickly takes a disturbing turn when he learns that the demons who fell on Phobos so many years ago have been revived by the dreaded Mother Demon!

Doom 64 is a game I've played numerous times and I truly believe, especially with the rerelease worked on by Nightdive Studios, that it deserves to be talked about in a similar vein as its predecessors.

The game is slower than Doom II and even Doom '93, this is likely due to the original hardware limitations of the N64 but it uses this slower pace to it's advantage, making the atmosphere of the game slightly spookier and giving a bit of weight to the seminal Doomguy, something that would be expanded upon in the reboot trilogy. The levels are also slightly more puzzle focused this time around and are designed well and due to the unique properties of the modified engine it runs on, levels can now shift and change in interesting ways that were perhaps not possible back in Doom and Doom II.

The gunplay has weight to it, sound design is punchy and there's a hint of camera shake to give those big effin' guns a real sense of power.

The game also features far more dynamic lighting and an entirely different visual style from previous titles in the franchise; demons are more detailed and have undergone a redesign to fit the somewhat grittier aesthetic 64' attempts to achieve.

It doesn't innovate in the ways 93' did and it doesn't refine like II but what we have here is a solid FPS experience that doesn't need to do those things, it's just a really fun game and if you're a fan of Doom or first person shooters in general and you haven't played it? You're doing yourself a disservice.

    8/10.

  • bigger, bolder, a worthy sequel.

Doom II in a lot of ways feels more like an expansion than it does an entirely independent game and though I don't think it's quite as consistent as its predecessor, that doesn't stop it from being a hell of a fun time and a worthy follow up to arguably one of the most influential games of all time.

The levels are bigger, more complex. There's essentially twice the amount of demons to slaughter, both in number and variation, with inclusions such as the Revenant, Hell Knight, Pain Elemental, Mancubus, Arch-Vile and Arachnotron being introduced into the franchise. The music is just as bangin' as ever with Bobby Prince returning to compose and we get a brand new toy to play with in the form of the iconic Super Shotgun, a tool synonymous with both the franchise and its protagonist.

Step back into the gore-drenched boots of the Doomguy, avenge your beloved Daisy and save the Earth from demonic invasion.

Doom II feels like a refinement and though it's difficult to stand side by side with the cultural Goliath that was Doom (1993), its important to remember that the franchise would not be what it is today had it not been for this game.

  • Iconic, influential and still outstanding thirtysomething years later...

The game that defined FPS and what that would mean for decades, Doom is a tight, adrenaline fuelled thrill ride packed with intricately designed levels, satisfying gunplay, a soundtrack of earworms courtesy of Bobby Prince and demons... lots of demons.

You are the "Doomguy", a marine serving disciplinary duty on a UAC base on Phobos; when a series of experiments go awry, UAC scientists unwittingly open a gateway to hell itself and both Phobos and Deimos bases are invaded by the forces of evil. As Doomguy, it's your job to acquire a hefty selection of weapons and wipe out the demonic threat above Mars before they can get a foothold in our reality.

The classic experience is made up of three separate episodes (four if you count Thy Flesh Consumed) spanning across three unique locations: Phobos, Deimos and eventually, Hell itself. Each level is packed with secrets to reward the curious player who decides to take their time to explore between gibbing demons and honestly? The whole thing is a real treat. I regularly come back to it and you can finish the whole thing in a day, even if you aren't particularly well versed with the series or genre.

There's a certain level of charm to Doom '93 that you'll seldom find anywhere else and with it now available as part of a double-pack with Doom 2, along with quality of life improvements and an excellent updated and reimagined soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult? It's never been a better time to go and play Doom.

    9/10.
