I was not the target demographic when I saw this
I can almost remember the elegiac melancholy that pervaded the 90 minutes or so of its running time
I am a big fan of Dave Allen, which is why I watched this play, and the experience was transformative
It showed me what being an adult might entail: nothing is certain, nothing works out, nothing makes sense
It is an incredible loss that DA was never given another role to move us in this way, but as a swan song it doesn't get any better
I remember that after the broadcast there was an earnest discussion where Frears was challenged by some critics who seemed to be from a different century, a different world completely
I'm not even a Stephen Frears fan, but even as a thirteen year old I knew those critics were clueless, irrelevant, and blind to the beauty of this work
Thank You DA and may your God go with you

As a total outsider this seems like the most incredible insight to the Hollywood machine
This has never been more prescient, and it is all the more interesting because of Favreau's career trajectory
He is the perfect host in this environment, somehow managing to make everyone feel at ease and able to encourage guests to relay anecdotes you will never hear otherwise
You can tell it's real because sometimes guests are so relaxed you can't actually understand what they're saying - Colin Farrell is a case in point
DfF is perfect in all respects, I hope it will be reborn for the next generation

If you want to see how a 'food programme' (although no Bourdain programme could really be described as such) is transformed in to a war documentary, then you need to watch this. The best journalist is someone who makes you understand what it would be like if you were caught up in the madness, and Bourdain excels at that. His empathy with his entourage is deeply affecting, and his 'patriotism' is for me at least, totally excusable, for reasons that are blindingly obvious.
The prism through which Bourdain views and describes the world is unique yet totally accessible. Food is after all what nourishes us all, and the effect is to make everything seem entirely real.
