I give it a 6.8. I don't get why this movie has such a low rating. It's not a groundbreaking plot or one filled with a bunch of twists but it's not crap either. The mystery aspect of the story I doubt you'll be guessing either. (Which I believe is or almost is the most important part of a mystery movie.) It's a detective story through n through. The acting is also pretty solid, no one had a bad performance. I think Shailene Woodley always gives as great performance, which was also true here. Joseph-Gordon Levitt was pretty good. Was t his best work but wasn't bad either. Visually the movie is also pleasing. Some great shots on a beautiful island.
This movie is great to say the least. It has a lot involved especially with introducing people and their part of the story. Maybe that's why some people think it's messy. But what they may not understand is Kevin Costner wants this to be a four part movie. So with these movies averaging 3+ hours x 4 that equates to a 12part limited series. So with all series 12part it takes a little while for everyone's stories to unfold. Doesn't mean it wasn't excellent, story, action, the acting and cinematography were all great. So not sure what people want in a movie. Sure parts can be a little slow but you're being introduced to everyone and everything. I would also say this is built for a more mature audience. I give it a solid 7.8; as for as westerns go (for me cause they aren't really my cup of tea) I give it a 8.4. Don't listen to the bad reviews, give it a go.
First three seasons were original and edgy. The writing and characters were awesome. Story was unfolding in an organic and fun way. Then comes season Four. I say it's lazy cause they took issues of today and just made that the backdrop to the season. They have to know the core audience for the show is who they're insulting. Furthermore they just turn a pretty main character gay out of nowhere. Making everything so obvious is part of the problem. If they wanted to incorporate these topics in the show, at least be creative about it. How do these writers and media companies not realize people watch shows to be entertained and get away from the nonsense issues of everyday life?
