It starts of interesting, even though the premise isn't something that's original. The editing is well-done and there are a lot of funny moments early on. Inevitably, the show takes a dark turn, but the extremities of it were too much and just seemed pointless. There are a lot of things going on at the same time and the latter half of the series is rushed and messy. The characters mostly do things for the sake of the plot and everything just becomes really unbelievable. The show doesn't take a deep dive into the personalities of the characters and we know very little about them, but that's what makes a show good - the characters. Without them, we are just left with a nameless crowd who tortures each other.
You can never go into a Yorgos Lanthimos film and not expect something unusual, but this time he even outdid himself. The cinematography is mesmerizing, characters are skilfully written and the whole plot is incredibly executed. It's fascinating to watch how the whole tale unfolds in its twisted ways, that are as equally hilarious as they are morbid. It's a masterpiece that brings out a variety of complex feelings with its intriguing philosophy about social indoctrination. However anyone feels about it, no one can deny that it's unique and original. It's nothing like you've seen before. The only problem with it is that it fades towards the end.
I don't understand the hate this movie got. Coming into it, I didn't expect it to be worthwhile because most Netflix originals are garbage, so I didn't expect this one to be any different, but I was in for a ride. Performances are great, dialogue is pretty solid and the plot is very refreshing and interesting. Even the hyperbole of the whole thing works in its favor and shows how far insecurity and greed can take you. It's a great character study that has no moral heroes. While watching, the intensity keeps increasing and you have no idea where the movie is gonna take you next. Don't mind the extremeness of it, enjoy it.
