Don't blame Coppola if you are lost or can't follow this film. Watch it again. And again.
In the new Hollywood of the early 1970s, Coppola emerged as the only adult while sidekicks such as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg couldn't resist perfecting kiddie matinees. Instead, Coppola forged multifarious narratives bluntly addressing America. With its sickening vanity of toadies and gangster corruption, his technologically sophisticated medium becomes silly putty in his hands, while avoiding the sin of spoon-feeding viewers.
Megalopolis is the best of films at the worst of times. Rome never fell; it evolved into a modern world. If futuristic New York City finally ends the Empire, elusive America retains the enigma. Who agrees we should rebuild it?
