I absolutely enjoyed this psychological thriller, or crime thriller or supernatural horror. Whatever you want to call it, it's a superb addition to an already stock full inventory of good horror films in 2024. No it's not as good as Silence of the Lambs or Seven , but in my opinion it's as good as an overrated Don't Look Now. Noticed that I'm not upgrading LongLegs to classic level yet but downgrading Don't Look Now. Don't look now wasn't considered a classic when it was released. It grew into a cult classic throughout time. LongLegs , on the other hand, was not only heralded upon its release but was a box office hit during a time where movies are struggling. This success unfairly puts it on a pedestal , similar to films like It Follows, Hereditary or The Witch. The bad reviews general come from the thoughts that "it's not as good as people say" instead of saying "it's just not good".
This reasoning for this is that they can't say it' isn't good. It's impossible to say that. Its cinematography is suburb, dark and brooding. The acting is superb with the exception of Underwood's, " LA law" depiction of a detective. Maika is masterful and Nicolas Cage literally carries the film and I'm not a Cage fan. The tone, well the tone is what sets this film apart. It just seems dark and evil , even though there's not much visceral violence. It feels more creepy, evil and violent than any horror film this year. It feels like something unearthly is controlling the viewer. It's unsettling and unnerving from the very start...and this is why I accept the ending.
Most people don't like the ending but in my opinion it makes sense for a film like this. Could there have been a better ending, well maybe? There could've been a better ending to Hereditary. But it wouldn't have fit the story. Hereditary needed the supernatural turn not in order to explain the events in the film but to explain the tone. LongLegs is exactly the same. I felt creeped out after it was over , even though I don't believe in God and the devil and that to me makes this a successful film. If it can make you feel that way even if you don't accept its premise then it's successful . I hate to say it, but the critics and mainstream audiences got it right this time. LongLegs is a horror classic, well maybe not now but it definitely will grown into one.

Finally a Godzilla film worthy of the original. I haven't been as entertained by a Godzilla film since Mothra( I haven't seen Shin) To me, the addition of the realistic drama of post-war Japan makes this film even better and Godzilla's destructive nature is at an all time high in this one. My only gripe was the quick editing that didn't give the drama some space. I know it's already 2 hrs but too me 30 minutes more to flesh out the human connections would've made the film even better. This is an adult film. It's more mature than any of the other Godzilla films , other than the original. It minimizes the monster contact but when it happens it has more impact. It doesn't seem forced or cartoonish.
In addition, the score and cinematography is without a doubt the best out of ALL films and the special effects deserved its Oscar. An American Godzilla film with half of the accomplishments of this one would still be better than any of the American past offerings, including the most recent "New Empire".
