I didn't expect much when I saw the title, the name mutant in the title is never a good sign, but I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was really great, being a historian I really enjoyed the weird mix of Great War, cyberpunk and post-WWII United States. Reminded me of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, just not that shiny. The feeling of hopelessness and despair was clearly visible. The characters were typical, no big thumbs up for this one, but not shallow. People who watch movies for the little things like the tone of blood and the color of guts might be disappointed, but for an average movie-goer like me, who goes to the movies for entertainment, not slaughterhouse atmosphere, the special effects were nice. For everyone who still hasn't seen it, the atmosphere is the key in this movie.
Uwe Boll is by no means the best director of our times, no, but still, the movie is watchable. And, I must admit, he has really progressed lately. You can't really expect something genius from a game-movie. And, before every game lover in the countryside starts yelling about how interesting the storyline of the game was, let's remember that the main attraction of the game was a half-naked vampire chick, and that's as deep as it goes. All in all, it's just drooling over a 3d model with double D's. (Same goes for Tomb Raider) Both Bloodrayne movies are much the same - hot chicks in tight clothing, sometimes smeared with blood, sometimes with no clothing. So - no deep thoughts and philosophy here either. Otherwise it's just adventuring, fighting, cheesy dialogue, cheesy acting. In my opinion, it's what you expect of an evening entertainment movie.
I never was a big fan of X-Files or such so, when the show was first aired I thought it would be another X-File ripoff with the only difference that characters are not called Mulder and Scully, but I was pleasantly surprised. And, seeing the other new shows that just started airing like "Invasion", "Surface" or Threshold" this one is totally genius (if they can keep it up, of course). The way both main characters are drawn in the fight against supernatural is a bit cliché, but still believable. The refreshing moment is that there is no secret government organization(secret society whatsoever) that has been working in shadows for centuries, fighting against evils unknown to mankind (at first it was nice, but nowadays almost every mystery/sci-fi movie has it so it has become boring) it's just two brothers in their own personal war against supernatural. So, if they can keep the classic secret society, super smart mentor and girls in underwear exploring dark cellars out of this show it's going to be one of my favorites for some time.
