Getting bored reading about how this was overlong, had little substance etc. Honestly, if you went along to see this movie not knowing what to expect and came away disappointed...well, given the amount of promotion that preceded its arrival, you really only have yourselves to blame.
For the record, I am definitely not within this movie's demographic. Yes, I love some of the classic Hollywood musicals from the golden age but broadly speaking I'm not a musicals guy. And as for Ariane Grande, she means nothing to me. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. As others have said here, its infectious energy makes it almost impossible not to like.
Nothing complicated to analyse here, no secret formula at play. Simply a bit of good old fashioned escapism and that should be enough for anyone, right?

Games are games, movies are movies. An adaptation is when elements of one thing are used to create something new. That's what video game adaptation is. For those of us who aren't gamers, we couldn't care less if a movie is a faithful adaptation of your sacred game. We just want to be able to enjoy a film.
I avoided seeing this movie on the big screen because the reviews were so bad, most of them fuelled by basement-dwelling gamers upset that Lilith was too old. Now that it's available to stream on Prime, I thought I'd give it a try. Guess what? It's nowhere near as bad as the gaming community would have you believe. Is it great? Absolutely not, but it's no worse than hundreds of other average to slightly above average sci fi adventures that I've enjoyed over the years.
Please stay in your basements and out of our cinemas, gamers, and we won't bother you while you're playing.

If The Brutalist walks away with the best picture gong at this years Academy Awards, it will be a travesty and among the worst decisions the academy will have made in...well, forever.
Before I tucked in to the 'delights' that this particular movie had to offer, I had been aware of many accolades being heaped upon it with words like epic and exhilarating being bandied around. Not once did I hear the word dull mentioned. For that is exactly what this overlong, well intentioned and well acted plod is, my friends. Dull, dull, dull...
If you are going to drop a three hour plus movie on people, you'd better be sure to have enough going on within that time frame to sustain interest. The fact that the final third of this movie is a real trek largely undoes all of the work undertaken in the first two thirds to establish the world and its characters. Which is a shame.
Go on., Academy. Do the right thing. Anora is the year's best picture and you know it!
