Gah! This is pitiful, damn near "Sweet & Hot" pitiful, seeing one of the greatest comedy teams ever, stuck in this film that would put speed-addicted insomniacs to sleep. Was there anything good about this junk, ummm....well, I did like the opening with the stooges popping up in the book. Everything else.... well, it's good to have on tape when I'm having trouble catching a few Z's.

It's these type of remade dogs from the mid-50's that makes me wonder why Jules White even bothered. This short should have been titled "All Gummed Up part deux: The Director's cut" or something. But I guess this short could be worth something to those who haven't seen the original since it basically "borrows" nearly all the old footage, and Columbia has released this short on VHS & DVD (why, instead of a much better remake like 'Loose Loot' I have no idea)?!?

This short was the first of nearly 2-dozen shorts from the '1953-55' period consisting of a heavy dose of stock footage from Shemp films made in the late 40's & would mark the slow decline in quality of stooge shorts. Some of these rehashed efforts weren't all bad, and this short starts off extremely well with the new opening footage of the stooges(unwittingly)helping crook Ken McDonald break into a man's home and steal from his safe. The new footage(running about 7 mins.)is so good, you can't help but feel letdown when the 2nd half is all stock footage from "Hold That Lion", save for a small 5 second clip. Jules White must've really like "Hold That Lion" cause a 2nd remake of it follows this short(Loose Loot)though 'Loot' is a much better effort and has a lot more new footage.
