The first 40 minutes were quite simply porn. The next half hour nothing but screaming and the F word. I was ready to quit but a friend said the end was good so. I took a break, fast forwarded some of the repetitive searching for the loser bridegroom, reached the end and felt like Peggy Lee when she sang, "Is that all there is?" How this got nominated, much less won, 5 Academy Awards is a mystery. It says more about the academy voters than this movie. The only area worthy of praise was cinematography. The script was ordinary to say the least, the story was a cliche and the actors totally forgettable.
Why do people make garbage like this and why do audiences watch it, much less praise it? I'm guessing being able to watch pornography in the open might have something to do with it.

I realize this was a passion project but I found everything about it annoying and unrealistic. Yes I know old people (and even gullible young people) get scammed everyday, but it was frustrating to watch a woman who could still do needle point, walk without difficulty and make her bed without a wrinkle act like such a dolt. She can use a computer and smartphone but still fell for this trap without a moment's questioning. She didn't get in touch with the parents who would be the obvious ones to call. I call fake. Of course the daughter was even stupider than her mother which is probably why Parker Posey played the character. That seems to be her specialty.
I suggest every grandparent have a test question to ask her "grandchild" if she gets such a call. I actually got a random call but since my grandson was 9 years old at the time, it was clearly a fake.
I think this movie got a high rating to honor the old woman who played Thelma. Like the comment about a dog walking upright, " It's not that she did it well but that she could do it at all."

Pretentious, predictable and bad acting. Like a modern day version of Our Town which was clever in its day. This, however, is not clever or groundbreaking. It is just plain annoying. Everybody's voice is too loud and too high. The novelty of shifting generations or time periods wore off after the first few minutes and jumping around in non-chronological order made it just plain jerky with no real point. I'm writing this as I watch it and I'm not sure I can finish either the movie or the review with its requirement of far too many characters. Only an actor of Tom Hanks' influence could have persuaded a studio to make this, but even Tom Hanks can't persuade me to finish it.
