I have not read the novel but I liked this picture because of the many quick mood changes.
There are so many emotions that change quickly all the time. One time the characters in the picture are serious and then one minute later everyone is laughing. And the next minute Philene and Max have some sort of serious conversation. You maintain watching this picture because all emotions occur so fast after one another.
What I also liked in this picture was the age of the characters. It looks like they are in their mid-twenties or something. I can imagine that the same story could apply to teenagers but also to people above 60.
That's my opinion. Nice movie!

After reading some negative reviews on imdb.com I want to comment on this movie as well. I really enjoyed this picture. It is so recognizable, identifiable, to follow the story of this Harvard student who struggles with his puberty and, like any normal kid, experiments with drugs and sex. Scary to see him get involved with the mafia. The movie is full with philosophical quotes and this is done in such a way that it gives the movie a bit of a creepy atmosphere. The voice of Joey L. Adams fits perfect in this overwhelming impression. The happy ending (the good guys win from the bad guys) is also what I like in typical American movies like this one. It was a great movie!
This picture is an excellent copy of the original book. Although the book was written more than 50 years ago the story is still exiting for young boys (and girls) and for the parents that read the book.
The twin brothers Hielke and Sietse Klinkhamer dream of having a boat. When they finally got one it becomes clear that their boat, although being rather ugly, is the fastest of the lake. In the movie the twin get to know Esther, a handsome girl that struggles with the death of her parents. This is a nice touch of the movie, since the book does not involve girls that much.
An excellent Dutch movie with some thrilling parts and a lot of laughs.
