My parents and I went to see the premiere of "The Steel Helmet" on Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood, California.

My father was a friend of Gene Evans and he had invited us to come and see the movie. I was about 13 at the time and I remember that Gene Evans was very excited about this movie. He was there at the theater to greet us when we arrived. I had always thought that Gene must have been the producer or writer of the movie as he was so proud of it. Ever since then I have looked for Gene in other movies or on TV and have always enjoyed his performances. I would love to get a copy of this movie so that I can see it again. I think I saw it once on TV many years ago. I also liked James Edwards performance in this movie and was saddened to learn that his career was cut short at a relatively young age.

I liked this movie. I have always thought that Charles Starrett was a very handsome man and a good actor. Tex Harding on the other hand is rather wooden, but he has a beautiful singing voice. However, it is not his voice at all but the voice of my father, James T. "Bud" Nelson, (whose credits can be found on this web site). This is a little known fact but my father sang for Tex Harding in all the Durango Kid movies. When I was 7 years old my father took me to the set of the Durango Kid movies and I met Tex Harding (John Thye)and he gave me an autographed picture.I always knew that my father sang in the movies but I didn't know who he sang for until I started doing some research in 2003 and realized that the man I met when I was 7 years old was the man that my father sang for. Sadly, my father passed away in 1994 and my mother in 2000 so I was not able to ask them questions about how all this came about and if my father sang in any other movies. I would recommend the Durango Kid movies that Tex Harding was in to anyone who would like to hear a smooth baritone voice. Close your eyes and listen.

I liked this movie mainly because my father is in it. He had a small bit part but his main role was as the singing voice for Tex Harding. He sings for Tex in all the Durango Kid movies. I find Tex to be a little "wooden" as an actor but his singing voice is great! Charles Starrett is a very good actor and I have always liked him. I was on the set of the Durango Kid movies as a child and got an autographed picture of Tex Harding (Unfortunately I no longer have this picture). I would recommend this movie to those who like Westerns. It has some humor and take a good look at Tex Harding's horse. I never saw a horse with such beautiful markings. And of course I would recommend this movie to those who can appreciate a good baritone singing voice, the voice of James T."Bud" Nelson. A listing of my father's movies is available on this site also.
