  • The irony of the reviews...

I find all of the reviews in here lamenting and poo-pooing that the show is overly American and that it's clearly written by an American trashing Europeans very ironic ! And proving a point ;) Let's break it down. For context, I am half European, and half American. While I do live in Europe, I travel to the US for work sometimes. I have extensive context and reference into both sides of the planet, with a bit more familiarity and ground coverage as far as Europe ;) So- this show, from my perspective, is full of stereotypes toward BOTH ends. It is taking a jab at both American stereotypes, as well as French/European stereotypes. And guess what? As cliche and annoying as the tropes and stereotypes get in this show; they can be quite accurate . Europeans/the French CAN be overly arrogant (without self awareness to fully acknowledge it), proud, and of the notion that their micro cultures are superior,... they do prioritize a slower pace of work over work force, often grumpy and rude, and inclined to believe they are so far above Americans -- as the negative stereotypes . You can literally see the superiority complex oozing and dripping from the reviews on this thread - case in point 😆 And then to the American stereotypes - they CAN have an almost naive dorkiness to them , a flavor of being immature to this lifetime, work driven, overly "friendly" (which Europeans often suspiciously regard as fakeness), often terrible at traveling and attempting to learn another language beyond their own, often not very well traveled or "cultured", and so on. (I would argue though that many Europeans think traveling around Europe is being well traveled, when really it's still staying in the European bubble- get out to Latin America or the war zones of Africa and then we will talk... But still, many people in the middle of America have barely even left their state).

So- yes I think this show makes a mockery of the two cultural differences and highlights their pros and cons, from both angles. It does it in an exaggerated way which gets annoying at times but thankfully they cooled off a bit as the show went on. I think one thing Europeans could do in general is lower their guard a bit to appreciate how both cultures might benefit from learning from one another, as both have pros and cons . I see value in prioritizing lifestyle, but I also see value in ambition. I see value in the "depth" that is sometimes more accessible in the European mind, but I also see value in the innocent friendliness of the cashier at an American store when she starts smiling and asking you how your day is. I personally may relate to and feel more at home in Europe but I still eye roll at the incessant superiority complex and acceptance of being a grump, that has yet to be acknowledged- and maybe it's the European in me that has to eye roll grumpily at other people ;) Meanwhile yes Americans as a whole have a long way to go as far as developing their own self awareness that includes awareness of the rest of the world, sophistication, becoming a bit more cultured and working on their "depth", for lack of better way to put it. If you ask me, both places in the world could do to get out of their own bubble more ;)

I gave this show 9 stars simply because after avoiding this show for years as it looked dumb to me- I found myself somehow getting sucked in. It's light watching. Like eating a sweet pastry or a warm blanket. Easy watching to brighten your mood. And sometimes we're not in the mood for Tarkovsky or Godard; sometimes a simple easy fairytale in the beautiful streets of Paris will do.

  • I can't believe this got such a low rating...

I'm having a hard time understanding the low ratings. Did we watch the same show ? I was sucked in after the first 15 minutes and it's the first show I've watched in a while that had me waking up in the morning thinking "ok, remember you can't just binge watch TV in bed all day; save it for night time".

A nice blend of quirkiness, mystery- subtly twisted undercurrents with a fun facade. I don't understand the reviews that said it dragged on; every scene was engaging and carrying the plot forward to me. I have one more episode to go and I'm just disappointed that the show is so short with no promise to renew, because I don't want it to end.

  • Obituary #2

I was initially a little annoyed with this show because it as too obvious what her character turn would be, from the first five minutes... Additionally, it reminded me way too much of the show Obituary, also from the UK, release only not so long ago. Similar quirkiness, dark comedy, office setting, reporter job, character turn and plot - but I felt the Obituary show was more unique in its nuance and story plot. I feel the striking resemblance has to be called out, and the plot is predictable , BUT neverthless- I eventually got into a groove with it and it turned out to be quite a fun romp of a show, even if the storyline wasn't particularly original, unique or powerful- it's a fun dark comedy and you eventually get taken along for the ride ... And swept into binging the series ;)
