Six stars is probably being overly generous. This sitcom is quite simply not good. I loved Tim Allen and the entire cast of "Home Improvement". "Last Man Standing" wasn't great in terms of writing, but at least the cast was interesting and talented. "Shifting Gears" is simply a car crash of a show. Outside of Allen, the casting and acting is terrible. Chemistry among the mother and her two teenagers is completely nonexistent. The writing is dull and predictable. Why any executive greenlit this show for more episodes after watching the pilot is a mystery to me. I've seen the first two episodes and have zero interest in any more.
What exactly was the point of this movie other than an exercise for the director at a creative angle of filmmaking? The storylines were bland, tired, and predictable. There were more sad/depressing moments in the home than happy ones. If you watched the trailer, you pretty much saw the whole film. I was also hoping for more of a "Forrest Gump" approach, where they featured multiple significant historical moments prominently throughout the movie. The few that were included were pretty much glossed over. As I've seen written in other reviews, real estate and home insurance commercials have been more interesting than this movie. Don't waste your time and money "Here".
Saw the first episode of this spinoff series last night and was left quite disappointed. GAMFM lacks the humor of "The Big Bang Theory" and the heart of "Young Sheldon". While its predecessors both featured All-Star type casts of main characters, GAMFM seems a lot more limited in what it can do. Whereas TBBT or "Young Sheldon" could feature interesting storylines with any of its main characters or secondary characters (any of the five members of the Cooper family, Meemaw, the professors, Dale, Brenda, the pastor, etc.), I'm not convinced the cast of GAMFM has that same chemistry and depth. The interactions with Mandy's brother and the long-term employee of the tire shop added little humor to the episode. I will certainly keep watching this new show though and see if future episodes improve.
