Everything about this movie flows together for me. The themes of loss, eternal love stories, the twin bond, folklore, magic, community, American racism, religion, sin, and profit are weaved together by Ryan Coogler's direction and unique vision. Wunmi Mosaku is downright ethereal as the mystical yet down-to-earth Annie. Michael B. Jordan handles both of his roles with a commanding star performance. I have always been drawn to the immortal stories of good versus evil. I love that I was transported, for a bit over two hours, into this incredible saga of beauty, horror and the endless promise of a vampire's kiss.
I was beyond excited for this show. I adore Luke Kirby. It starts off very promising until we meet Cheyenne. Perhaps I should say until we hear Cheyenne. She screams at everyone, offers nothing but angry words as her solutions, and is quite overwhelming and exhausting as a character. I had to pause and calm myself several times. I am willing to offer up my traditional three episodes to view before deciding if Étoile is worth a full season watch. Right now I'm leaning towards a no because if Cheyenne remains one dimensional then I don't have time to deal with her upsetting stress and pitiful dynamic.
What's not to love? Josh Hutcherson invests the protagonist Mike with true heart, so that you actually care what happens to him and his little sister Abby. The story keeps you invested from the first frame. This movie is effectively creepy with just the right amount of dread, dark humor, and ghost story. Five Nights at Freddy's gets the animatronics right, seriously impressive! One of my pet peeves is when the movie screen gets so dark you can't really see what's going on but this film gets the darker scenes right by clearly displaying the fright. I appreciate that FNAF manages to appease its fan base whilst making itself appealing to us newbies. This is your perfect little Halloween thrill, so enjoy.
