Borbaad: A Mass Audience Movie
No Spoilers
A spoiled rich kid, Arian Mirza-he indulges in all sorts of wrongdoings, but his weak point is Nitu. He can do anything to get her. But what does Arian Mirza do that makes the entire nation demand his execution? To find out, you have to watch Borbaad, directed by Mehedi Hasan Hridoy and starring Shakib Khan, Idhika Paul, and Jisshu Sengupta, produced as a joint venture.
First of all, salute to director Mehedi Hasan Hridoy for having the courage to present something larger-than-life on the big screen. Borbaad grabs attention right from the opening sequence. Shakib Khan's massy entry scene created a celebratory atmosphere in theaters. I really missed such an entry in Rajkumar and Dard. Anyway, the first half mainly builds the relationship between Shakib and Idhika. Their on-screen chemistry was quite good, and several action sequences were presented in a massive style, making them enjoyable. However, the twist before the interval was a total goosebump moment-completely unexpected. It makes the story even more complex in the second half. The presentation of the second half is impressive, focusing on the theme of "getting what you want at any cost," which was quite thrilling. The violence escalates in this part. Some issues exist, which I'll discuss later. The second half is designed on a massive scale, with a fast-paced screenplay. And the climax? Pure entertainment! This is a different Shakib Khan-unstoppable.
Shakib Khan delivers a phenomenal performance. He is both charming and graceful yet aggressive and ruthless. I've never seen him in such a massy look and presentation before. It's doubtful if anyone else could have carried Arian Mirza's character the way he did. His second-half look is arguably the best of his career. And the Shakib Khan in the climax? Unforgettable. Idhika Paul deserves praise too. After watching Priyotoma, I said she has the potential to be a regular in Dhallywood. In Borbaad, she gets a well-layered character and delivers a strong performance. She also looked quite adorable throughout the film (I say this about all heroines, though). Jisshu Sengupta's character was well-presented, but I expected more screen time given his return after so long. Misha Sawdagar played an impactful role, while Intekhab Dinar was slightly loud but did well. Manav Sachdev deserves a special mention. Shyam Bhattacharya performed well. Shahiduzzaman Selim, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Nader Chowdhury, Kazi Hayat, and Tropa Majumder all did justice to their roles.
The film features six songs. Nishash, sung by GM Ashraf, had perfect placement and presentation, creating a goosebump moment in theaters. Mahamaya by Noble was soothing. Dwidha, sung by Pritom Hasan, was a nice romantic number. The dance number Chand Mama was quite fun. There was a climax song-I apologize, I don't know the singer's name, but it was good. Mayabi, sung by Imran and Konal, had a beautiful tune, which was used effectively as background music in the first half. The second-half background score was also well done. Raju Raj's cinematography was visually pleasing, and the color grading was well-balanced.
Now, let's discuss Borbaad's flaws. The first-half screenplay could have been tighter. Jisshu Sengupta's entry scene was great, but the police station segment seemed abruptly edited. He was portrayed as a powerful figure initially but felt somewhat diminished by the end. More screen time for him would have been better. The presentation of violent scenes was strong, but due to blurring, they felt incomplete. While this was done to appeal to family audiences, honestly, even they would find these scenes intense.
Overall, this was Borbaad from my perspective. Mehedi Hasan Hridoy hit a sixer with his debut film. But the big question-Toofan or Borbaad? Which one is better? Go to the theaters and decide for yourself!
